Obituary: unJohn Eugene Gene Kirk passed away 10, 2014 at home surrounded by friends and family. He was 95 years old. He was born to John Alexander Kirk and Cora Suther Kirk in Newell, North Carolina where he grew up on a farm and remained a farmer throughout his working life. He graduated from Newell High School where he played basketball. high school, he attended Lees McCrae but left school when his father broke his back and he was needed to work on the farm. During this time, he became a county agent working with cotton allotments. One week before the Pearl Harbor attack he was drafted into the US Army, the first group from Mecklenburg . He eventually landed in Europe 6 days after D-Day. He was a First Sargent in the 644th Tank Destroyer Battalion. Gene was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry for saving the crew of a tank caught in a tank trap. He also received a bronze star for saving fellow soldiers from a burning tank. Gene was awarded the Belgian Fourragere and the Legion of Honor from the French government. His unit also received a Presidential Citation and Five Battle Stars. He became a rural letter carrier and carried the mail until he retired. He then became president of the North Carolina Rural Letter Carriers Association. getting up early and delivering the mail he would come home change clothes and work on the farm until dark and sometimes later. He was awarded a plaque from the Postal Service for having driven 1,000,000 miles accident free. Gene was a founding member of the Newell Volunteer Fire Department. He was a member for 37 years protecting his neighbors homes and lives. He served as chief of the Newell Volunteer Fire Department for 7 years. he retired from the US Postal Service, he began to volunteer for the American Red Cross traveling around the country to earthquakes, floods and tornados helping those in need. He also delivered blood for the Red Cross throughout the region. He was a life-long member of Mallard Creek Presbyterian Church serving as an elder for 60 years. He was always there anytime the church needed help or just stopping by to visit. One pastor said that when a person visited Mallard Creek that Gene Kirk usually beat him there for a visit. He was always at the Mallard Creek Barbeque except for WWII and the last few years. He also spent many years cooking for the youth of the church on nights. He was married Edith Bennett Kirk in 1947 and built his own home across the street from where he was born. spent 66 years together. had one son, John Bennett Kirk. were devoted to each other and the only time they spent apart was during hospital stays. Both developed a love for travel and visited 6 of 7 continents and over 100 countries. also visited each of the 24 time zones of the world. He is survived by his wife Edith B. Kirk and son, John Bennett Kirk and Johns wife Lory and their children Breanna, Margaret and Gloria. He is also survived by; his brothers Harry and Bill Kirk, sister Sara Louise Killian and sister-in-law Gloria McClintock. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, great nieces and great-great nieces and nephews. Pall Bearers will be James Killian, Don Killian, Kirk Killian, Harry Kirk Jr., James Harry Killian Jr and Kevin Kirk The funeral service will be 11:00a.m., , 13 at Mallard Creek Presbyterian Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends 6:00p.m. to 8:00p.m., evening at McEwen Service, Derita Chapel. Obituary: James William (Bill) Kirk, 89, went home to his Lord on 5, 2014 after a brief period of declining health. He was born on 3, 1925, the son of the late John A. Kirk and Cora Suther Kirk. Mr. Kirk graduated from Newell High School. In 1983, he earned his undergraduate degree in Business Administration from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. UNCC was dear to him from the time as a young man when he helped Bonnie Cone set up special events to later years when he served on the UNCC Alumni Board of Governors. UNCC honored him by electing him to its Hall of Fame. He grew up working on his parents dairy farm located between Newell and Mallard Creek. During the Korean War, he served 6 years in the Naval Reserve and 2 years in the Army. At Newell School, he was a substitute Agriculture teacher. working at Alexander Tank & Equipment and General Motors, he spent 30 years as a rural mail carrier in Charlotte. Mr. Kirk was a life-long member of Mallard Creek Presbyterian Church, where he served over the years as an Elder, Deacon, School Teacher and Superintendent, and all-around volunteer. He worked at most of the Churchs famous Bar-B-Ques. Community service was always important to Mr. Kirk. He was a 19-gallon blood donor to the American Red Cross. In 1949, he helped organize the Newell Volunteer Fire Department, where he retired with 25 years of service, including several years as President. Mr. Kirk enjoyed many years with the University City Civitan Club, where he also served as President. He chaired the Board of Directors for University Adult Day . Queens University (which named him an Honorary Alumnus) asked him to serve as Chairman of their Board of Visitors, and as a member of the Presidents Advisory Board. Mr. Kirk was elected foreman of the Grand Jury for its 6-month term. Gov. Jim Hunt appointed Mr. Kirk to two terms on the Efficiency Council of the NC Department of Transportation. He was Chief Judge of his election precinct for 15 years. Mr. Kirk had a life-long love of gardening. He was well known in his community and on his mail route for sharing home grown tomatoes and other fresh-picked produce. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Boeckmann Kirk, with whom he enjoyed many years of travel in the US and abroad. He was also preceded in death by his brother, John Eugene Kirk. Mr. Kirk is survived by his daughter, Kim Kirk Steffan (John) of Mebane, grandson Andrew John Kirk Steffan of Mebane, sister Sara Louise Kirk Killian of Charlotte, brother, Harry Suther Kirk, Sr. (Margaret) of Charlotte, many nieces and nephews, and many friends. His funeral service will be at Mallard Creek Presbyterian Church on , 10, 2014 at 11 a.m., with visitation at the Church at 9:30 a.m., with arrangements by McEwen Service. Obituary: Elvie Pauline Pilkington Kirk of 512 Maywood Ave in Raleigh went to be with "her Jesus" on afternoon surrounded by loved ones.
