Obituary: Theo N. Kirkland, Jr. 4, 1924 - 18, 2015 Dr. Theo Neal Kirkland, Jr. (90) of Birmingham, AL was born to Theo Neal Kirkland, Sr. and Ethel Landers Kirkland. Born in Montgomery, AL, he attended Emory University and the University of Alabama Medical School. He completed his residency in Ophthalmology at Tulane University, where he met his first wife, the late Ruth Morris Kirkland, mother of Theo’s four children. Not long after finishing his residency, Theo served as a Lieutenant Commander in the US Navy during the Korean War and returned to Birmingham to practice Ophthalmology for more than 50 years. the death of his first wife he married Wilma (Jeannie) Thomas Kirkland (deceased). He is survived by his four children: Dr. Theo N. Kirkland III (m. Grace) of San Diego, CA; Rebecca Kirkland Stephenson of Birmingham; Amy Kirkland Myers (m. George) of Birmingham; and Peter Burnham Kirkland (m. Kate) of Birmingham, as well as numerous grandchildren, and a great grandson. His priorities were his family, his profession and his faith. He worked as an ophthalmologist for many years, primarily at Medical East. He simply loved being a physician and helping thousands of people preserve their sight. Theo was always very active and preferred to spend his leisure time at his farm in St. Clair tending to his garden and cattle. Theo was a kind, honest and hardworking man who devoted much of his life to medical missionary work with underprivileged people in Alabama, Mexico and Central America. He was a faithful member of the Church of Christ who was guided by his faith in all things. Theo was a wonderful man who was widely loved. We will miss him dearly. The funeral will be at Johns-Ridout’s Elmwood Chapel on at 2 PM with reception following service. In lieu of flowers donations should be made to the Ashville Church of Christ, 33502 US Highway 231 Ashville, Al 35953. |

Obituary: will be at 2 p.m. at Collier-Butler Chapel for Teanie Mae Morgan Kirkland, 88, Rainbow City, who passed away Jan. 9, 2011. The Revs. Roy Daughtery and Bobby Winningham will officiate. Burial will be at Pilgrims Rest , Southside. Mrs. Kirkland was a native of Etowah . She was a member of McEntyre Baptist Church, Ashville. Mrs. Kirkland was retired from Etowah Board of Education after 41 years of serving two positions with them. Mrs. Kirkland was a lifelong caretaker, cook and Granny to all. She had a special love for children and special love and concern for all friends on Hood Road for the past 62 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew Jackson Kirkland; daughters, Marie James and Bonnie Staton; brother, Roy Morgan; sister, Elizabeth Daughtery; son-in-law, George Williams; grandchildren, George Thomas Williams Jr., Pansy Michelle Williams and Billy Ray Williams; and a number of sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law. She is survived by her children, Martha (Jim) Chambers, Jo Ann Williams, Dustin (Terra) Maton and Jessica Maton; sons-in-law, Tommy James, Steele, and Elmer Wallace, Southside; brother-in-law, Jerry Travis Kirkland; sisters-in-law, Martha Morgan and Ila Mae Kirkland; loved like her own children, Dot (Jack) Williams, Faye Williams; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews. And special thanks and love to Elaine Beasley Jones for many years of friendship, help, kindness and love, and special thanks to grandson Keith James for watching over her, and special kindness and love to her nephew, Jerry Kirkland. And a special love for her dog and companion, Riley. He was her love and what kept her going the past 10 years. Pallbearers are Dan Grant, Alton Hutchins Jr., Roland Beasley, Bobbie McCartney, Vernon Lee, Tim Whitemore, J.D. Robinson and Jason Chambers. Honorary pallbearers are Dr. S.P. Sancheti, Dr. Bryan McGwier and Dr. David Burton. Thanks to Alacare and Hospice for all their help. The body will remain at the funeral home through the hour of service.
