Obituary: (Viola) Joyce Ksenics, age 87, passed away on 13, 2015, at Elizabeth Church Manor due to health complications following a heart attack on 17. Up to that time, she lived independently in her own home, which was her greatest desire. She was born Easter on 8, 1928, in Binghamton, NY. Joyce enjoyed her childhood and growing up years where she lived with her parents and older brother on the South Side. graduating from Central High School, she attended Delhi for one year. In 1948, she moved to Washington D.C. to work, and it was there she was introduced to her future husband, George, who was also from Binghamton. were married in 1950 in Washington, D.C. Joyce said that she joined the Marine Corps when she married a Marine, and thus began the military life. The young couple was assigned to Yorktown, VA, where they lived before he received orders for Korea. their first child (Penny) was born in Binghamton while George was in Korea, they were sent to Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville, NC, where their second daughter (Bonny) was born. lived in Kittery, Maine, until George's orders sent the family to Albany, GA where their son (George II) was born. one last assignment at Camp Lejeune, and 20 years in the Marine Corps, George retired. The family returned to Binghamton in 1963, which was the place they called home, where both sides of their extended family lived. settled in Hillcrest to be close to her parents in Port Dick. Joyce took a job at Link Corp. and afterwards found an office job at Binghamton State Hospital, where she retired after 23 years. She was a persistent worker by habit, and later found employment at the Egg Lady and also worked at the Comfort Inn for many years serving breakfast. Her retirement years were her golden years, and she filled her life with her numerous interests, activities and associations with her many friends and family. Her children and grandchildren were her focus in life. She was a traveling grandma, ready to drive or fly to wherever her family was located. That included many trips to Maryland and Virginia for holidays and special occasions, as well as two trips to Israel. Her supreme satisfaction was the cottage at Columbia Lake in Deposit, NY. She loved to have family there in the summer to enjoy swimming, fishing, and get-togethers. Her grandchildren enjoyed "Camp Grandma" and there was nothing she wouldn't do to provide them an enjoyable time and build happy memories. Joyce was an enthusiastic and skilled quilter, and presented her lovely quilts to family and friends. She was a member of the Broome Quilters Night Guild. She was an active member of Kattelville Seniors Association and enjoyed many trips with her friends. She loved bowling and was on different leagues through the years and participated with the American Legion Post 1254. She was an avid golfer, and until last summer she belonged to a golf league that played at Ely Park. She participated with the Good Shepherd Fairview Auxiliary where she regularly assisted with the bingo events for the residents. She was a long-time and faithful member of the Ogden Hillcrest Methodist Church where she sang in the choir. She participated in many functions of the church including helping with vacation bible school, Sojourners Club and serving as a trustee. Until shortly before her death, she and friends from her school days regularly met for lunch. Her favorite activities were going to church suppers, playing cards with her friends, and attending plays and concerts. She was always ready to go anywhere and do anything. She loved being active! Everyone who knew Joyce loved her friendly nature, her forthright observations and her sense of humor. She was a bright light to many and she will be missed for her many acts of kindness, consideration and service. She is survived by her brother, Gene Darrow of Raleigh, NC; daughter Bonny and son-in-law John Palmer of Bethesda, MD.; son George Ksenics II and daughter-in-law Cindy of Mount Vernon, VA. She is also survived by seven beloved grandchildren and 13 great-grand children: Yisroel (Leora) Frenkel and their seven children, Shulamis (Yehuda) Josephson and their four children, Colton (Adrienne) Palmer and their son, Allison (Damon) Jensen and their son, George Ksenics III; Emma Reece (Kevin) and Jack Ksenics. She is also survived by many relatives and caring friends with whom she has enjoyed life-long relationships. She was predeceased by her beloved parents, Helen and Bill Darrow; husband George Ksenics, and daughter Nama (Penny) Schabb. Her funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on , 25, 2015, at Odgen Hillcrest Methodist Church, 1061 Chenango Street, Binghamton, NY 13901. In advance of the funeral, the family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the time of service. She will be buried at Chenango Valley where four generations of her family are laid to rest. Interment services are private. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Ogden Hillcrest United Methodist Church Memorial Fund or a charity of your choice.
