Obituary: Born on May 13, 1931 to Ivol Thostesen and Margaret Gallant, she died 8, 2010 of cancer, aged 79. Predeceased by her brother Thomas, she is survived by her husband of 56 years Dr. Myron Mike Kelsey, Rev. Dr. Cathie Kelsey and Dr. Terrence Tice, Dr. Timothy Kelsey and Dr. Alice Kelsey, and three grandchildren: Julia, Emma and Eli Kelsey. Joan Kelsey was a graduate of Cornell University and lived in East Lansing for 51 years. She was an active lay leader in the West Michigan Conference of The United Methodist Church (UMC). She began as secretary for the MSU Wesley Foundation Trustees and became district secretary of college student work for United Methodist Women (UMW). She subsequently served as Lansing District UMW president, UMW Conference vice-president 1972-76, and UMW Conference president 1976-80. She served as a director of the General Board of Global Ministries and Womens Division 1980-88. In 1982-90 she was the first woman Conference Lay Leader and was a lay delegate to General Conference four times between 1980 and 1992 and delegate to Jurisdictional Conference five times between 1980 and 1996. She chaired the committee that assigns bishops, the Jurisdictional committee on episcopacy, from 1988-92. She participated in helping elect the first woman bishop in the UMC in 1980 and encouraged or mentored more than four persons into full-time ordained ministries. She was an excellent organizer and teacher. Using those skills, she traveled extensively worldwide for the General Board of Global Ministries, taught nationwide for Womens Division, and was influential in many aspects of the UMC in Michigan, including serving as a Trustee of Albion . She participated in the Academy for Spiritual Formation 1990-92 and then provided organizational and spiritual leadership for five 2-year Covenant Communities in Michigan 1992-2005. At University United Methodist Church (UUMC) in East Lansing she trained over 55 Stephens Ministers in the 15 years she was a Stephens Leader. She started a tradition of family camping at UUMC and talked over 1,000 families into participating across 40 years. teaching second grade School in the 1960s she led the Seekers School Class for adults for more than 20 years, focusing each week on the biblical text for the mornings worship service. Recently she also taught several sessions of the series Living Fully, Dying Well by Reuben Job which gave her a faith-filled perspective on death as a chapter in the gift of life that God has given each of us. She advocated broad definitions of stewardship and ministry that invite everyone to offer their lifework and gifts to God daily. In 1999 she chaired the building study committee for a major addition to the church facility. She was also well-known for her ability to knit sweaters while fully participating in meetings, varying her project selection to fit the intensity of the meetings agenda. Memorial Services will be 26, 2010 at 4:00 pm at University United Methodist Church, 1120 S. Harrison, East Lansing. Family will see friends at 3 pm and following services at the church. Memorial gifts may be made to University United Methodist Church for an endowment to support Lay Leadership or to the American Cancer Society. Her ashes will be interred in the University United Methodist Church Memorial Garden next to her dear friend and co-conspirator, Dr. Isabelle K. Payne. Obituary: Alexandria Sandy Joan Kelsey passed away May 1, 2015 at Green Acres of Mason. She rests in the blessed assurance of her Lord and Savior. There is no more pain and no more lost memory; she is in perfect peace. Sandy was born in San Francisco, California on 31, 1930 to Guy W. and Olivia G. (McLean) Cooper. She married John Coryell Kelsey and after 47 years of marriage, John preceded her in death. raised 5 children, Donna Sojka (TN), Diana Prianto (La Jolla, CA), Frank Kelsey and his wife, Marcia (Brighton, MI), Joan Pifer (Battle Creek, MI) and John Kelsey and his wife, Mary (Mason, MI), all surviving. Sandy is also survived by 21 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren. Sadly, Sandy was preceded in death by one grandson, Tagore Prianto. Family was an important part of Sandys life. She loved children of all ages and always cherished the value of a big family. She loved to sew, cook, knit, and garden. For the many lives she touched, most would acknowledge that she made the best cookies! Her Christmas treat trays were truly gifts from her heart. Sandy lived in Battle Creek for nearly 40 years. She worked at Sears and Roebuck and Battle Creek Sanitarium as well as being a homemaker. She had a servants heart and cared for dear friends and ailing family members. She would always be ready to take part in family gatherings. Sandy will be forever in our hearts and minds. A funeral service will be held at 1 pm , May 6, 2015 at Gorsline Runciman s, Ball Dunn Chapel, Mason, Michigan. The family will receive visitors one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will take place at 11 am , May 7, 2015 at Oak Hill , Battle Creek, Michigan. The family is being served by Gorsline Runciman s, Mason Chapel.
