Obituary: Arthur W. Knowles Arthur W. Knowles passed away on 21, 2010 at Maine Medical in Portland surrounded by his loving family. Born on 27, 1935 in Portland, he was the son of Mary A. (Campbell) Knowles. He was educated in the Portland school system and graduated from Portland High School in 1954. Arthur proudly and honorably served in the United States Marine Corps from 1954 to 1957. He was a light middle weight boxing champion of the 6th fleet with a record of 46 wins and 1 tie. On 23, 1958, he married Ellen Mary Toher, also of Portland. would have celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary in a few weeks. Arthur and Mary Ellen worked together in their family business. His father-in-law, Fred Toher, took him under his wing and taught him the industrial chimney business from the ground up. When he first started with the company it was Chick and Toher Construction then later he and Mary Ellen became co-owners and the company was renamed and incorporated as Knowles Industrial Services Corporation (KISC). Arthur served as President and CEO until his retirement in 2001. KISC is now owned by his daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Daniel Maloney, making it a third generation business. As a businessman, Arthur earned the reputation as a top-notch steeplejack and mason. He was known as an innovator and was always searching for new ways to improve the concrete repair industry. Arthur was among the first to use epoxy injection technology in the northeast and was the first in New England to utilize the wet-mix method of shotcrete placement. During his tenure, KISC earned several awards from the Associated General Contractors of Maine both for workplace safety and for quality. As a result of Arthurs leadership, KISC is considered one of New Englands premier specialty contractors. As if operating KISC was not enough, Arthur and Mary Ellen worked together to develop several commercial real estate properties in the greater Portland area. Arthur was very active in the Portland community. He became the youngest ruler of the Elks Club, sponsored numerous youth sports teams, donated and delivered food baskets, clothing and toys to local families. Every Christmas, he became Santa to the neighborhood children and was Mr. Magicman for the Pumpkin Man at Halloween. Arthur loved to sing and dance with his family and friends. He was known for his impersonation of Louis Armstrong and his signature song, Hello Dolly. He had a bigger-than-life personality and an uncanny ability to enter a room and make everyone feel special. You could always expect to laugh and smile whenever you came into contact with him. As an avid outdoorsman, Arthur loved hunting and fishing at his familys camp in the North Maine woods and during his annual trips to Pierce Pond. Arthur was deeply religious. He was a lifelong Catholic and member of St. Josephs Parish in Portland, Our Lady of Sebago, and St. Judes in Jupiter, Florida. Arthur possessed a strong work ethic, which began in his youth. His first job was as an assistant paperboy delivering newspapers to the top floor homes for 5¢ a week. At nine years of age, he started working at Bottos Bakery oiling bread pans. made him a special stool to stand on so that he could reach. At fourteen, he began delivering bread daily to Sams Restaurant in Lewiston. His boss told him to say he stole the truck if he got stopped by the police. Most importantly, Arthur was dedicated to his family. Not only was he the most loving and devoted husband to Mary Ellen for almost 52 years, he was also the most loving and devoted father, grandfather (Papa), and great-grandfather that a family could ever have. Together they enjoyed snow skiing, tennis, boating, waterskiing, and trips to the Allagash, the islands and Jupiter, Florida. Arthur is survived by his best friend and wife, Ellen; two daughters, Michelle K. Parish and husband, James M. Parish, of California, Maryland; Lisa K. Maloney and husband, Daniel C. Maloney, of Falmouth, Maine; four grandchildren, Danielle M. Harris and husband, Brian C. Harris, Arthur A. Winfield and wife, Jessica M. Winfield, Ellen M. Maloney and Mary K. Maloney; three great -grandchildren, Andrew J. Harris, Brianna M. Harris, and Kingston A. Winfield. He is also survived by his mother, Mary A. Knowles, who lives in Carl Junction, Missouri ; four sisters, Joan, Judy, Kathy and Jeanne-Marie; three brothers, John, Charles and David. The family would like to thank the staff at Maine for Cancer Medicine (MCCM) and the Gibson Pavillion at Maine Medical for their kindness and compassionate care. Visitation will be held on , 27th from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM and from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Jones, Rich, & Hutchins , 199 Woodford Street in Portland. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on , 28th at 10:30 AM at St. Josephs Church on Stevens Avenue in Portland. Burial will be in Brooklawn Memorial Park, Portland.
