Obituary: Portland- Mary Ann Black Kibbee, 91 years young, passed away comfortably at home with her children by her side on 27, 2015. She has been a business woman and landlord her entire adult life. Born to Edward J. and Mary Ann (Swales) Black in 1923, the oldest child of five siblings. She grew up in Allston (a neighborhood of Boston) where just after WWII, she met and married Robert (Bob) P. McCormack. Together they had four children, Paula, Robert, David and Joan. graduating high school, she started her working career at Lever Brothers, producers of Lifebuoy, Lux and Vim soap brands, now Unilver, as a quality control inspector. She also worked for the Raytheon Corporation as her young family grew. Mary started her lifelong Real Estate career in Allston where she earned her real estate license and bought her first property where she and her family lived and where even today, family members continue to live. She was one of the first women in Boston to open her own offices, Mary A. McCormack Realty. a friendly separation and divorce from Bob, the family moved to Newton where later she married Jerry Sheehan, a real estate developer. While still dealing in real estate and collaborating with Mr. Sheehan, they developed a complex of apartments named the, Mary Ann Apartments , in Fitchburg, MA. She also at this time worked at the former Madison Hotel at North Station in Boston which at that time connected the elevated green line trolley station to the original Boston Garden. While there, Mary worked in sales and function organizer as well as booking agent for conventions such as the first Boston Fish Convention. Mary and Mr. Sheehan ended their business and marriage in 1969 and she moved to Portland, Maine and sometime later married Mr. Austin Kibbee of Falmouth Foreside who introduced her through their many trips throughout the great State of Maine. She began purchasing multi-family properties in Portland and managing (that is, patching, painting and wallpapering) on her own when her marriage to Mr. Kibbee ended. She had done volunteer work in Boston for the Red Cross and the of Dimes but it was in Portland, the city she came to love, where now in her 50s would devote the next forty years to her family, her business and her friends. She was a restoration chairperson for the Victoria Mansion to fund a new roof. She was a member of the Womans Woodford Club, a past president and life member of the Womans Literary Union (WLU). She was a member of the Longfellow Garden Club where she established the American Chestnut Tree in Portland Arboretum in her late dear friends name, Lucille Rideout. She also belonged and supported other groups and organizations such as The Lincoln Club, the Maine Womens Republican Club, Special Olympics of South Portland, the Florence House and the Preble Street Clothes Drive among others. She was an avid reader of novels, poetry, history, the Press Herald and Wall Street Journal. She loved a good conversation on a multitude of subjects, loved religion, empowerment of women, gardening, travel and politics, being a lifelong conservative and graduate of the school of hard knocks and daughter of the depression. She loved to entertain. She loved her home overlooking Payson Park where she loved cooking, dining and always set a wonderful table for a gathering of friends and family. She enjoyed a good drink of scotch or a perfect dry martini which would always bring even more fervor to her lifes embrace. Playing Bridge was a passion. Even when life seemed a struggle and the tribulations of that life could wear her down, when she sat down with her friends to play Bridge, they knew that Mary was 100% game on and the satisfaction of that elusive slam would keep her percolating for days after, or as in life, I just didn get good cards today, but any day playing bridge with friends was a good day, a social day. She was a woman who stuck to her guns, a self-made business woman, she was vibrant and wonderful caring friend to all who loved her and was a kindred spirit with her. Many people have said, the moment I met Mary.. She was a force of nature... the strongest woman I have ever met... She will be greatly missed by her family and friends and even in the shortening time she had with us all. She would often say, with a glint in her eyes, Im off., on to my next big adventure. Godspeed Mary A. Black Kibbee. She was diagnosed with cancer early in her eighties. She accepted it, found calm, went with the treatments, continued to move forward.. Went parasailing in Cancun at 86 years old with her best friend and daughter, Joanie. She continued to live her life and run her business passionately thanks to the trust she had in her oncologist, her primary care physician, their staff, her own life force, her friends, and later the Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) and the wonderful and thoughtful people of Hospice. She leaves behind two sisters; four children; a daughter and son in-law; three grandchildren and their spouses; four beautiful great-grandchildren, Brighid and Morgan of Munjoy Hill and Grace and Fiona of Walden, New York; and her darling dachshund, Bella. Mary loved flowers and her clubs so feel free to give to any of said organizations in her name. Visitation will be held from 1-3 pm on , 2, 2015 at Jones Rich & Hutchins , 199 Woodford St. Portland, ME, where a funeral will follow at 3 pm. Burial will be in the spring at Blanchard in Falmouth.
