Obituary: Gerd Klaveness, 94, a retired colonel in the Air Force Reserve and a former teacher, principal and acting district superintendent in the New Orleans public schools, died in New Orleans on , 11, at the Lambeth House retirement community, where she had lived since 2009 after moving from her home of many years in Old Metairie. Ms. Klaveness was a Reserve officer for 28 years, retiring in 1979. Her final active duty assignment was as personnel director for the 920th Weather Reconnaissance Group, a “Storm Tracker” unit at Keesler Air Force Base whose C-130 aircraft flew into approaching hurricanes to transmit data to the National Hurricane in Miami. Among her earlier assignments, she was the first woman to command the 1st Wartime Information Security Squadron and the first woman to command a combat support squadron. She spent 25 years in the New Orleans schools, first as an art teacher at Gregory Junior High, then as assistant principal of Rabouin Vocational School, principal of the McDonogh No. 10 and John A. Shaw Schools, and as acting District 4 superintendent. She often said, “Every child can learn.” It was a motto she lived and taught by. Ms. Klaveness was born in Fauske, Norway, above the Arctic Circle. She emigrated to the United States at age 3, arriving with her mother, twin sister and two brothers via Ellis Island en route to join her father, a steamship captain for Standard Fruit whose home port was New Orleans. She was active in the Norwegian community in New Orleans throughout her life, serving as a trustee of the Norwegian Seamen’s Church and as a member of the Norwegian-American Chamber of Commerce, which gave her its NACC Image Award in 1994. She also pursued a lifelong interest in art, and after her retirement studied at the New Orleans Academy of Fine Arts on scholarship into her 10th decade. Two of her paintings are to go on display at Lambeth House. She was, as well, a specialist in the art and science of kransekake, or Norwegian ring cake, baking hundreds over many decades for public and private celebrations. She is known to have shared her recipe for the almond cakes, which can sometimes be dentally challenging but were richly al dente in her version, with only two people. Ms. Klaveness held a B.A. degree from Louisiana State University and an M.A. from Loyola University, New Orleans. She took graduate courses at Tulane University, studied at the University of Oslo, Norway, and held several certificates from the Air University of the Air Force. During World War II she worked as a censorship officer for the State Department, and was later assigned to help reopen American consulates in Germany. In the late 1940s and early 1950s, she was the assistant executive officer of the Fulbright exchange program in Oslo. Ms. Klaveness, who allowed those unfamiliar with the subtleties of her mother tongue to render her first name as “Gad,” was the youngest of four children of Capt. William and Ella Erikstad Klaveness. (Her fraternal twin sister, Aud, who predeceased her, was fond of noting that Gerd had been born a few seconds after she was, making Aud the third-oldest child and Gerd, the much taller of the two, her junior.) Her brothers, Alf and Odd Klaveness, also predeceased her, as did her longtime friend, Paula C. Dalier, also a principal in the New Orleans schools. Ms. Klaveness’s father, Captain Klaveness, commanded United Fruit boats sailing between Caribbean and North American ports. It was an era when a captain’s family could join him on voyages, and Ms. Klaveness remembered bright summer days playing under the indulgent eyes of crew members of one of his vessels, the Ceiba, poking her head into the huge air vents that opened above deck. Captain Klaveness – a naturalized American citizen, like the rest of his family – remained on the Ceiba into the perilous early days of World War II, when American coastal shipping was at the mercy of German U-boats. On 15, 1942, the Ceiba was torpedoed off Cape Hatteras, N.C. Several crew members survived, but the captain went down with his ship. Near her life’s end, Ms. Klaveness found special grace from a perch in the 12th floor “crow’s nest” at Lambeth House, marking the stately, irresistible progress of ships large and small churning up and down the Mississippi River. She had no children of her own, but he is survived by all those she taught and loved, including her nieces and nephews, Charles Klaveness of Hillsborough, N.J.; Michael Klaveness of Houston, Tex.; Kaaren Gotwals of Scottsdale, Ariz.; Richard L. Cutshall Jr. of Mesa, Ariz.; Kay Westenbarger of Niceville, Fla.; and Kenneth A. Klaveness of Dallas, Tex.
