Obituary: Master Builder John Kleinops - An American Dream come true John (Viestures) Kleinops, 92, passed away 25, 2015. From a humble start as an immigrant from Riga, Latvia - John arrived in the US in 1949 with his first wife Irene, two small children (Percy and Robert) and no language skills to eventually become one of Indianas leading custom home builder & developer. Displaced from their home country of Latvia during WWII, John and many fellow Latvians spent the war years living in a DP camp in Esslingen Germany. Eventually sponsored for immigration to the US by the Lutheran Church, John and his young family first settled in Wapakoneta Ohio and then later moved to Spencer Iowa where he worked at a feed company. At the age of 26 and inspired by the opportunity offered by post war life in America, he quickly learned the language and was soon pursuing his chance at the American dream. His wifes parents, having settled in Indianapolis invited him and his family to move to Indianapolis and share their small house on Boulevard Place. Making contact with fellow Latvians that made the move to America, he soon learned of opportunities available in the construction industry and attended trade school. working several odd jobs he was given an opportunity in the building business by Gene Glick of National s. John eventually formed his own design & building business as John Kleinops Inc. in the early 60s. Over the years he completed over 500 homes and developed the subdivisions of Sweetwater Estates, Belle Mead, Royal Pines, Traders Point and Normandy Farms. Educated in landscape architecture in his native Latvia, he became an early proponent of integrating design, nature and conservation in his developments. A craftsman at heart, he employed many fellow immigrants to provide the custom cabinetry, European design and pride in the quality of their work. He viewed each home as a unique vision of the client, with no two being exactly the same. He built homes for several prominent Indiana residents, and was invited to remodel the Washington office of Indiana Senator Vance Hartke. His homes were truly one of a kind, ranging from Alpine Chalets, French Provincial, Modern and even Japanese themes. An early adopter of technology, his homes and projects featured innovations in the efficient use of water, gas and electrical components. As a result, the Indianapolis Show selected him to build the centerpiece home 6 times during his career, where he and his team would build an entire house on the state fairgrounds, only to later be re-assembled in one of his subdivisions. His reputation for design along with respect for preservation of existing topology, specimen trees and erosion controls lead to the Krannert Foundation granting him the opportunity to purchase the farmland and estate of the late Herman Krannert on Indys northwest side. He was awarded the Urban Conservationist of the year in 1980, and later donated the Normandy Farm Amish Built Barn to the for Agricultural Science & Heritage, where it now sits adjacent to the Indiana State Fairgrounds. A superb athlete, he was a professional Ice Hockey player for Hockey Club Augsburg in Germany, an avid skier and skilled tennis player. He was a founder of the Hockey Corporation of America which owned and operated the two Ice Domes and was a long serving commissioner of Indianapolis Youth Hockey Association, a volunteer Referee along with coaching his Bantam / Midget team to an Indiana State Championship. In 2013 he was named to the Latvian Sports Hall of Fame for his contributions to the game of Hockey in Latvia, where he and his son Robert were responsible for bringing many young Latvian players to the US to pursue hockey and receive high school and college educations. Following the death of his first wife Irene in 1993, he was fortunate enough to meet a fellow Latvian widow, Dagnia Mikulaschek who had spent the war years in Esslingen as well, with her brother and mother, a former teacher of Johns back in Latvia. While they both lived in Indianapolis, their lives seldom crossed until both lost their spouses. Better late than never, they have spent the past 20 years together in a testament to love, kindness and the beauty of life. Spending time between Indianapolis and Delray Beach Florida, the strength and example set by their love for one another brought together two families into a larger and wonderfully diverse family that we are all thankful for. John was a former member of the Indianapolis Racquet Club, Hillcrest Country Club and the Boca Raton Resort & Club. He was a 33rd degree Mason, a member of the Murat Shrine Temple, Newcomen Society, and a member of Rotary International for 41 years. He served on the boards of both the Builders Association of Indianapolis and the Indianapolis Show. John is survived by his wife Dagnia Kleinops, his sons, Percy (Toni), Robert (Carole) and Karl James (Julie), stepsons Andrew (Daury), Anthony (Lori); and grandchildren Kimberly, Kristopher, Jeffrey, Christina, Kevin, Alexander, Morgan, Matthew, Samantha, Andrew, Chandler and Damon. InformationVisitation and services will be held at Crown Hill Cemetary on 28, 2015 at 1:00 PM. Obituary: New Carlisle - Marian Kleine, 86, passed away peacefully on , 8, 2015 around 3 pm est at Hamilton Grove, New Carlisle, IN. She was caringly attended by Hospice, and surrounded by her loving and familiar Hamilton caregivers, many whom she had known for years. Born in Michigan, Marian was the middle child of Johnny and Hanna Luella (Seward) Machel, who both preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Audrey Darlene Machel, and brother Paul John Machel; brother-in-law, Torrey Seyfried; sister-in-law, Dorothy Machel; niece, Kathy Machel; and nephew, John Machel. Marian is survived by her nieces, Susan Jones of Naples, FL and Sherry Weliver of LaPorte, IN; her grand nephew, Noah Varnak (Malarie Pearce) of New Carlisle; her grand niece, Sarah Varnak of Naples, FL; and her great grand nephew, Cyrus Varnak Canada. Marian was a lively, active person who created a wonderful life for herself despite some disadvantages. She lost her mother at a young age and her father while in her teens, and was not formally educated beyond the sixth grade. Growing up, she and her siblings lived with various relatives in southern Michigan during the Depression years, moved to LaPorte with their father Johnny, and ended up in New Carlisle in the early 1940s. Marian had many diverse and interesting occupations. As a young woman she worked in sales in the toy department at Sears in South Bend. She then became a dental assistant for several years to the late Dr. Hastings of South Bend. She always had a flair for fashion, and in the mid-1960s opened a womens clothing store, The Carriage Shop, in New Carlisle, running it successfully until her brief marriage to local farmer, the late Clark Kleine. Following her divorce she became a buyer for the former womens clothing store, Wymans, of South Bend, IN, traveling to New York on buying trips. In the 1970s she moved to Kalamazoo, MI, where she managed two retail clothing boutiques. Returning to Indiana in the late 70s she managed a jewelry store at the former Scottsdale Mall for several years. In the 80s she shifted gears and finished out her working career at the former Austenal in LaPorte. Marian didn have children of her own but adored her siblings children and grandchildren with her whole heart. Known as Mimi, she loved and related to children and young people in a way most adults couldn . She was fun, indulgent, and a kind and patient teacher. Many rummy players were educated at her kitchen table, enjoying Cherry Cokes and chip and dip to their hearts content. Throughout her life Marian had a thirst for learning. She took piano, handwriting, sewing, and millinery classes as a young woman, loved to decoupage in the 70s, and took up oil painting in her later years. When she began her well-earned retirement in the late 80s, she pursued her many interests with boundless energy. She researched and taught herself anything she wanted to learn, beautifully refinishing furniture, creatively decorating her sweet little yellow house, and painting anything and everything. Marian loved flowers and was a passionate gardener. Spring, summer and fall, friends and neighbors could find the formerly fashionable businesswoman on her hands and knees, elbow-deep in dirt, creating, moving, and tending the many perennial beds and gardens in her Michigan Street yard. She worked like a man, re-painting the outside of her house many times over the years (always yellow) and her beautiful white front porch while in her 70s. Whether plumbing, wood-working, gardening, or un-sticking a stubborn window, her favorite tool was usually a butter knife. Mimi loved animals and had many cats and dogs in her life. She fed the birds in her yard, and loved to line up a row of peanuts on her deck railing, then whistle for the blue jay to come to eat. He always did. As Alzheimers progressed, our Mimi slowly drifted away. We have long missed her unconditional love, her encouragement, her deep pride in us, her sense of humor, and everything else about her that we loved so much. Her memory will live on in the many stories we share. We are grateful for her love, and better people for having been a part of her life. A memorial gathering will be held at the Old Republic in New Carlisle on , 13, 2015 at 2:30 pm. Friends and family are welcome to come and share their memories and Mimi stories. Light refreshments will be served. Memorial contributions in Marians memory may be made to the Alzheimers Foundation of America (www.alzfdn.com) or Historic New Carlisle, Inc. |
