Obituary: Millard H. (Mel) Kinney, Emeritus Professor of Music at Northern Arizona University (NAU), died of natural causes , 9, 2016 in Sun City West, Arizona. Mel was born in Ontario, Oregon on 10, 1929 to Alice (Brink) and Lloyd Kinney. He is survived by cousin Marjorie Bailey, her son Gregory Fuller, and his daughters Chelsea Jean Fuller and Allison Ann Fuller, all of Beaverton, Oregon. A memorial service and a celebration of life will be held , 16, 2016, at 3 PM in the sanctuary at the Sun Lakes United Methodist Church, 9248 E. Riggs Rd., Sun Lakes, Arizona 85248. Few men have likely ever achieved the legacy Mel Kinney has left. In the 30 plus years he taught at NAU he developed first-rate choirs of all types. His Splinters did several storied USO tours abroad. His madrigal ensembles were superb. His original Esquire Escapades shows were the talk of Flagstaff. However, the crowning choral music work of Mels career was the Shrine of the Ages Concert Choir (called Shrine by member singers). When he became the conductor of that storied ensemble, they were still part of the NBC broadcast (begun in 1939) of the Easter sunrise at Arizonas Grand Canyon. the radio broadcast ended, Shrine built a reputation throughout the United States as a superb collegiate choir-a reputation that thrives today under current conductor, Dr. Edith Copley. Mel also developed several events that still occur in Flagstaff. The NAU Jazz and Madrigal Festivals (begun in 1977 as the NAU High School Invitational Festival with 7 choirs invited) still continues today, with approximately 140 high school choral ensembles performing in 6 different Flagstaff venues every . Mel began the renowned NAU Christmas Dinner 41 years ago. Recently renamed the NAU Holiday Dinner, four evening dinner performances sell out in only a few days. For those Arizonans who love choral music, admission to this dinner/performance is a highly sought ticket. Several awards were presented to Mel during his time at NAU. In 1980, it was the NAU Faculty and Students Recognition of Service Award. The American Choral Directors Association honored him in 1985. Mels retirement, NAU Shrine alumni created the Mel Kinney Scholarship in 1990-an endowed fund with the NAU Foundation that awards money every year to promising choral music education students at the university. In 2005, Mel was inducted into the Arizona Hall of Fame by the Arizona Music Educators Association. Finally-two years ago in , Dr. Edith Copley honored Mel by commissioning a new choral piece for him to conduct at the 2014 NAU Holiday Dinner (the 40th anniversary of the dinner). This was also a reunion of Mels alums and was to be his final performance at his beloved university. Mel Kinneys retirement from NAU in 1985, his influence continued to grow in the area of church choral music. He served as the Minister of Music at the Church of the Beatitudes in Phoenix, Arizona for ten years. Following that, he served as the Director of Music at the Sun Lakes United Methodist Church in Sun Lakes, Arizona. The impact of his teaching and music-making was just as potent for his singers in those churches as it had been in his time at NAU. In both positions Mel grew the choirs to greater numbers than they had previously known and his passion and soul. Wherever Mel lived and worked he made friends. He knew how to love every person for who they were. Servers and security personnel in the retirement facilities he recently inhabited weep over his passing. Former neighbors and cashiers in businesses he frequented felt the impact of his love and energy. His family was huge. His circle of influence was larger than we can imagine. Countless people from all walks of life are saddened to lose a truly great man. None of these awards and accomplishments can even begin to define the impact Mel had on his NAU students and church choir singers. Singing under his direction meant giving everything you had-physically, mentally, and emotionally. Finishing a Shrine concert or a cantata or an oratorio with him directing left singers physically exhausted, emotionally drained, and elated beyond belief. This man was impassioned and demanding, yet loving and supportive of everyone who sang in his choirs. Some singers remember actual out-of-body experiences during concerts. Rich Boyd (a 1970-1973 Shrine member) writes, There were numerous times we would have so little energy left, we almost stumbled off the risers. He had the amazing ability to reach into you and pull out everything you had to give for that performance and then pull out even more. Ive not worked with another director who was so deeply emotionally involved with their choir. Life does not end with a choir concert-although at times we perhaps wish it could-and Mels influence will not end with his death. Mel had an impact on every singer. Many of his students followed in his career path as lifelong choral teacher/conductors-but those people were not the only ones inspired by him to attempt great things for humanity. Mels students were great in practically every field one can imagine-from school administrators to doctors of all kinds; from elementary teachers to university presidents; from successful business people to clergy. There are likely few professions that don have a Mel Kinney alum doing great work.
