Obituary: Paul Johnson, born in Diamond, W.Va., on 6, 1917, passed away 23, 2015, at 97. Husband for 57 years to Phyllis "Flip" Johnson until her death in 2006. World War II veteran, retired pipefitter from Plumbers and Pipefitters Local No. 625, 61-year resident of St. Albans and member of Highlawn Baptist Church. Called "Bob" by many and “Sweet Robert” by Flip, Robert lived a long, active life. He felt blessed to be married to Flip all those years and to have his three daughters’ loving care until the end of his life. He was always surrounded by the women in his family who told him often how handsome he was. He was also good at making others smile. In later years, he would raise his left hand and share with visitors a "tip of the hat" gesture at the end of their visits. A humble man who expected no entitlements or special attention, Robert knew the meaning and benefit of a hard day's work and was a strong, kind person, whose handsome, quiet smile could melt your heart. A caring father, he often said how much he loved his girls. Robert always had a special project he was working on. Even in his last weeks, he could be seen sanding and polishing some antique golf clubs his grandson sent him that needed some real attention. He also distinguished himself in his life by the loving care he showed his wife, Flip, as he personally cared for her in their home during her final years when touched by chronic illness. At Highlawn Baptist Church, Robert served as a Deacon and usher and helped with numerous projects at the church, helping lay the basketball court in the church gym, painting the sanctuary, building the flower beds, plowing snow in the church parking lot for 17 winters and refurbishing the fire escape step by step. A World War II Navy veteran, Mr. Johnson will have a military honor guard at his burial . He served in the war from 1943 to 1945 and was stationed in the Pacific as Seaman 1st Class. Robert was a longtime member of Chelyan Masonic Lodge (1946) and Beni Kedem Shrine (1947). His work with Pipefitters Local 625 included the construction of the Charleston Civic , John Amos Power Plant and Marriott Hotel, important local projects he was proud to be part of. He also worked many years on projects at DuPont, Goodrich Gulf and Ashland Oil Refinery. A gifted athlete, most notably with his long history as a baseball pitcher, Robert began playing baseball at age 14 in the School League in Cabin Creek, WV and played American Legion Baseball until age 18. He then played in the Industrial Baseball League as the star pitcher for many teams, including DuPont, Stamper Motors and Bob Bender, achieving many accolades and All Star recognition. In 1949, he was chosen as a lefty pitcher for the Charleston Senators Class A baseball, the farm team for the Cincinnati Reds. his baseball days were over in his mid-40s, Robert took up golf and was a member of Sleepy Hollow Golf Course for decades. His athleticism enabled him to do well at golf, highlighted by winning the WV State Open Seniors tournament at The Greenbrier in the First Flight Championship. For many years, Robert enjoyed bowling, fishing and the many projects in his workshop going at all times. He particularly loved trips with Flip to their camp in the mountains in Pocahontas , WV or to the cottage in Lakeside, Michigan to visit his grandchildren. Besides his wife, Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde Vernon Johnson and Prudence Hamilton Johnson; daughter, Sandra Johnson DeWitt (2005); and granddaughter, Lori DeWitt; son, Robert Vernon Johnson (1958); sisters, Louise Johnson Edwards, Claudia "Cotton" Johnson Lane; and brother, Martin. He is survived by daughter, Jane Johnson (Steve) Thompson; grandson, Robert Baker (Sara) Thompson; great-grandchildren, twins, Ellen Stuart Thompson and Margaret Baker Thompson; granddaughter, Catherine Brooke Thompson; daughter, Martha Ellen “Marty” Johnson; daughter, Jean Johnson Fanning, grandson, Trevor Hamilton Fanning, granddaughter Helen Olivia Fanning; grandson, Jeffrey DeWitt; and great-grandchildren, David and Natalie DeWitt. Robert will be missed by all who knew him. A celebration of Robert’s life will be held 11 a.m. , 28, 2015, at Highlawn Baptist Church, 2304 Jefferson Avenue, St. Albans with Pastor Mark Stouffer officiating. Burial will follow in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans with Military Graveside Rites conducted by St. Albans VFW 6418 and American Legion Post 73. Obituary: Richard Scott Johnson , May 17, 2015, R. Scott Johnson left this earth too soon. Scott was a loving son, brother, twin, grandson, nephew, cousin, teammate, loyal friend and amazing person. Scott was born on May 22, 1994 with his twin sister Liza. He was the son of Richard D. and Jennifer W. Johnson of Charleston, West Virginia. In addition to his parents, Scott is survived by his twin sister Liza Johnson; his older brother Joseph H. Spano Jr. of Charleston; his maternal grandmother Jane D. Withers of White Sulpher Springs, WV and Sanibel Island, FL; his paternal grandmother Mary E. Johnson of London, WV; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and loyal friends. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather Dr. H. Scott Withers formally of White Sulpher Springs, WV and Sanibel Island, FL; his paternal grandfather Hobert L. Johnson formally of London, WV. Scott was a 2012 graduate of George Washington High School. He was a member of the high school football team and area hockey league. Scott attended Concord University preceding his untimely departure. Scott was a loving son and a sincerely amazing person. He positively impacted every single person that was around him. His sense of humor lit up the room and he made each and every person laugh that was fortunate enough to know and love him. Scotts giant heart and caring nature inspired us all. He literally never had an enemy in this world. He was an avid outdoorsman and would rather be fishing than doing anything else. He loved history and read many different books on war. Scott was also an outstanding artist and left many drawings and doodles behind for us all to enjoy. A visitation and celebration of life will be held from 5 to 8 p.m., , May 20, at Snodgrass , 4122 MacCorkle Ave. S.W., South Charleston, WV 25309. A memorial service and funeral will be held at 12 p.m., , May 21, at St. Matthews Episcopal Church, 36 Norwood Rd., Charleston, WV 25314. A reception will be held immediately after the service in the outside garden at St. Matthews. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations be made in memory of Scott to the Kanawha Charleston Human Association, 1248 Greenbrier Street Charleston, West Virginia 25311.
