Obituary: In Memoriam - Lynn Barbara Johnson 23rd, 1933 to 16th, 2010 How can we measure a life? Beloved wife of Frederick and mother to Christopher, Laura and Thor Johnson, Lynn left us on 16th in Bellevue, WA. Her life was so full and vigorous that it is hard to capture its essence in a few paragraphs. She cared deeply about people in her family, community and world. A giver, she continually put the interests of others ahead of her own and sought to bring people together across barriers of race, ethnicity and nationality. She sought to advance the interest of women in society, long before there was a womens movement. And she was an advocate for racial reconciliation and diversity, long before the latter became a part of our social lexicon. Lynns early years Born in New York City, on 23rd, 1933, Lynn was always proud of being a native of the Big Apple. Nonetheless, as a girl, she cherished time spent with her mother Mary Alberts family, on their Ohio farm. She enjoyed relating stories of Marys youth as a farm girl, and her own experiences growing up alongside members of the Albert, Harper and Carter families. Mary was divorced from Lynns birth father, she married Carl Nelson and Lynns brother Charles joined the family. lived in places as different as Evanston, Illinois, and Piedmont and Walnut Creek, California. Lynn graduated from Piedmont High School and attended Stockton Junior , now known as of the Pacific for two years. One of her favorite stories relates to the live tiger mascot which appeared at college football games. She then transferred to the University of Washington, graduating in 1954 with degrees in commercial and fine arts. Her studies at the School of Art accelerated Lynns lifelong passion for the visual and performing arts, both as an artist and advocate for arts programs and facilities. college, Lynn returned to the Bay Area, lived in the City of San Francisco and went to work for Standard Oil. She was always proud of the fact that she lived on her own and supported herself, something that was considered a little unusual for a young woman of that era. She enjoyed city life, participated in church choir and the Young Republicans. Always an enthusiastic dancer, Mom volunteered at the USO where she met Dad at a dance. Lynn and Fred were married at the Chapel of the Wayfarer in Pebble Beach, CA on 14th, 1957, and the reception was held at the home of Lynns mother Mary on 17 Mile Drive. Artist and gourmand A longtime member of the Water Color Society, Lynn began entering juried shows in the 1950s. As a young wife and mother, she displayed her paintings on the sidewalk alongside those of other local artists in Niantic and Mystic, Conn. When the Johnson family moved to San Diego, CA in late 1960s, Lynn continued to paint and enter shows. She also was active with the Museum of Man during San Diegos tercentenary in 1969. Around that time, Lynn entered the Pillsbury Bake-off, receiving a prize for her now famous lemon bars and Bundt-cake. An eclectic chef, she excelled in preparing dishes from around the world and serving them up estaurant style on plates in the kitchen before delivering them to the dining room. She delighted in decorating the table with beautiful vases, placemats, napkins and rings. The family arrived in Bellevue in 1972, and Lynn plunged herself into civic and cultural activities. She was a founding member of the Arts Alliance of Washington and the King Arts Network. She joined the Bellevue Arts Commission in 1977, serving as chair from 1980 - 81. At the Bellevue Art Museum, she served on the docent council and volunteered at the Museum, long before it moved into the old funeral home at the edge of Bellevue Square. Lynn and Fred continued their support as founding members when the new museum opened in 2001. Lynn was a longtime participant in the annual Pacific Northwest Arts and Crafts Fair, both as an exhibitor and volunteer. Together they became patrons of the Seattle Repertory Theater in the 1970s and joined the Bel Canto Guild of the Seattle Opera, enjoying many a matinee. In the 1990s, Lynn served on the board of the Group Theater, which produced an early staging of Black Nativity. But theres more For over 50 years, Lynn was a proud member of the American Association of University Women in Connecticut, California and Washington. She was a member of the Lake Washington Branch and while serving on the state board acted as chair for cultural interests. She attended many AAUW conferences and in 1995, fulfilled a longtime dream to visit China, doing so as a delegate to the 1995 Womens Conference in Beijing. She also joined the Virginia Gildersleeve Circle, which is committed to advancing the interests of women and girls in developing nations. From the beginning our family home was open to visitors from around the world. For decades, Lynn and Fred hosted foreign scholars as members of the UW Foundation for International Understanding through Students. A particularly memorable occasion involved feting members of the Moscow Sovremennik Theater for a backyard BBQ and round of croquet in 1990. Lynn also served as a board member for the UW Multicultural Alumni Partnership, promoting the admission and advancement of students of color. A lifelong Republican, she was an admirer of President Abraham Lincoln and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., alike. This short story of Lynns life would not be complete without a mention of her love of childrens books, and of public radio and television. As a young bride she read stories aloud to children at the public library in Palo Alto, CA. Years later, she had a story lady program on KBCS radio at Bellevue Community and appeared on continued... |
