Obituary: George (a.k.a. Grunt), passed from life as we know it, 15, 2016, in the wee hours of the morning. He succumbed to respiratory failure after miraculously surviving a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm on 30, 2016. He fought for his life for two weeks at Harborview Hospital in Seattle, Washington with a humbling amount of family and friends at his bedside. George was born in Orting, Washington, to Cyril O. Johnson and Ruby Hartman Johnson. He was the second born child, and first of three sons. His father was an electrician and his mother was a homemaker. His older sister Betty, and two younger brothers, Howard and Edward, all grew up in the Orting and Tacoma areas of Washington. He attended Lincoln High School in Tacoma, Washington, and graduated in 1947. He enlisted in the Air Force as a young man and spent three years serving his country as an aircraft mechanic, until honorable discharge in 1950. In 1950, he married his next-door neighbor sweetheart, Patricia Louise Shaw (deceased in 2002), and they were married for 17 years. had one child, Georgia Louise, born in 1957. divorced in 1968 and he never remarried or had other children. During his life he worked various jobs, including as a home delivery milk man for Carnation , an attendant for Standard Gas , a cashier for Food King Grocery Store, and finally spending 20 years as a model maker at the Boeing plant in Kent, Washington, retiring in his early 60s, young enough to enjoy many years of free time. He had a relentless sense of humor, was a perfect handyman, had unbreakable patience with attention to detail, and was a very honest and caring man. One of his greatest accomplishments and a dream come true, was earning his private pilots license in 1969. He later bought the most beautiful airplane in the world, a 1946 polished aluminum Cessna 140. Together they traveled to many airshows, where they received several first place ribbons. Years later, he built from scratch, an experimental aerobatic airplane, a KR-1, named Crème-d-Mint. To support his love of aircraft, for the last 35 years of his life, he lived on a private airstrip in Graham, Washington. He was the first resident to move in along the edge of the runway and eventually had a beautiful home and two airplane hangars. He enjoyed doing metal machining, mowing his 2.5 acre property, and just sitting on the front porch watching airplanes take off and land. His other hobbies included working out at the gym, shooting trap and skeet, and over 50 years of playing golf. In his early 70s, he developed Parkinsons disease, yet remained exceedingly active, strong, and optimistic despite tremors, weakness, and increasing falls. Although he had many family members and friends whom he loved dearly, his greatest source of pride and joy was his daughter Georgia. Named after him and Patricia, from the moment she was born he spent limitless hours with her in all aspects of her life. Describing their relationship as special is such an understatement; they were two peas in a pod. were so connected to each other and relied on each others love, devotion, and strength, until the end. George is survived by his only daughter, Georgia Gibson (Austin, Texas), only granddaughter, Erica Greminger (Corvallis, Oregon), older sister, Betty Torkelson (Puyallup, Washington), one great granddaughter, five nieces and one nephew. He is preceded in death by his younger brothers Howard Johnson (Riverside, CA) and Edward Johnson (Nevada City, CA). No services are being held. |

Obituary: George Hosken Johnson, successful businessman, dedicated volunteer, and most of all, beloved husband and father, passed away peacefully on 29, 2014. George was born on 3, 1923, to Walter Hautville Johnson and Mildred Susan Babe Hosken. George and his brother, Walt, grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area. During the pre-war years, the Johnson family loved to visit the Sierra Nevada, and especially Bucks Lake, where George acquired a lifelong taste for fishing, boating, and hiking. a year of college, George joined the United States Army in 1942. He served with distinction in New Guinea and the Philippines, and with General MacArthurs forces in post-war Japan. He received an honorable discharge in early 1946. George then went back to college and graduated from U.C. Berkeley with a business degree. He joined an electrical supply company, Graybar, where he had a long and successful career. George rose steadily through the ranks and became the Branch Manager for Graybars Oakland office. In 1974, George accepted a promotion to become Graybars District Manager for the Northwest District, based in Seattle. Of course, he couldn have done any of this without his wife and life partner, Betty. married in 1952 and were together for more than 62 years. had four children: Dave, Debbie, Cristy, and Rick. George retired from Graybar in 1982. But he wasn done with his work years. He told his family: The first day of my retirement I played golf. The second day I quit golf forever. George started to volunteer for the Seattle Audubon Society. Over the next 15 years, he spent probably 1,000 hours each year helping the Society. He was most proud of his work for the Nature Shop, where the profits are for the birds. George helped the birds a lot. He spent his last 10 volunteer years as a driver for King Senior Services. Every week he would pick up low-income seniors and drive them to their appointments. all appreciated what he did for them. George lived life to the fullest. While enjoying the wonderful Northwest summers, he loved nothing more than to start up his boat and drop a fishing line in Lake Washington (usually successfully). George also savored a fine glass of chardonnay; a nice piece of salmon; a good book; jigsaw puzzles (the harder the better); sunny beaches in Southern California; cruises in the Caribbean and the South Pacific; the cabin he built at Little Grass Valley Lake in the Sierra Nevada; and treasured weekends at his beach house. But most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family. We will miss him so much. George is survived by his wife, Betty; his son, Dave, and daughter-in-law, Linda Sewright, of Bainbridge Island; his daughter, Debbie, and son-in-law, Chris Amrhein, of Riverside, California; and his grandchildren, Heather, Steven, and Katie Amrhein. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother; his daughter, Cristy; and his son, Rick. A celebration of life will be planned at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in Georges memory may be made to the Seattle Audubon Society or a Cancer Research organization. |
