Obituary: Phyllis Mae Reeves was born on 2, 1920 in The Dalles, Oregon, the first child in a family of three children. Her parents lived in the tiny town of Maryhill, Washington so the closest hospital was across the Columbia River in Oregon. The hospital could only be reached by taking a 2 car ferry across the river.

Phylliss mother, Susan, always repeated the family folklore that Phyllis learned to talk very early. Her parents thought she could also read at an early age until they surmised that she had memorized everything that was read to her, including the appropriate times to turn the pages in a story book. In contrast, her brother Marvin, did not talk until he began speaking in paragraphs at the age of two, according to their mother.

Her father, Lester, was a teacher and later a grade school principal who served in the Seattle public schools most of his career. Mother would tell stories of how important she felt when she and her brothers, Marvin and Dick, would help their father distribute the books and supplies to each school classroom at the end of the summer. She was proud of contributing and helping her father and all the teachers and students who would be coming soon to start the new school year. Dick reports that he and Susan, Phyllis mother, were still distributing books and supplies when he was well into his teenage years after Phyllis and Marvin had gone on to college. It was exciting to open the big boxes of new books and see what the students would be using for the next school year.

Phyllis grew up during the depression. She earned spending money by babysitting for 10 cents an hour. She and her parents and siblings picked pie cherries on the property of Lesters father to earn spending money for the children. Marvin and Phyllis used to have a contest to see who could complete the most crates of pint baskets, 24 to a crate. worked a long day on ladders in the hot, dusty orchards and earned 15 cents a crate, and usually picked about 9-10 crates each. Dick says the money was put in the bank to buy Christmas presents later in the year.

Phyllis family lived in Cheney while her father was teaching and attending teachers college to better his career ambitions. moved to Tacoma when he got a higher paying teaching job and on to Seattle as his prospects improved and he became a grade school principal. The family lived in the Montlake, Wallingford and Ravenna neighborhoods.

Phyllis graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1938. She attended the University of Washington from 1938 to 1942 and participated in Presbyterian activities including Westminster Club and Phi Chi Delta.

Education was highly valued in Phyllis family as she grew up. She always wanted to be a doctor but gave up that dream because of her poor eyesight, her asthma, and the cost of medical school. She lived at a time when girls were not encouraged to pursue such lofty goals. Her father attained a Masters Degree and Phyllis and Marvin helped him analyze the data for his thesis on how much children knew about money and about how much things cost. Her two brothers both attained their doctorates, Marvin, in physics, and Dick, in organic chemistry.

Phyllis completed a Bachelors Degree in Economics in 1942 and worked as a research home economist for Western Farmers for several years after her divorce developing canned and frozen food products for institutional use. making was an art passed down to her by her mother, Susan, and was a cherished heritage for Phyllis which she wanted to pass along to her daughters. We still make holiday treats with her recipes including her famous pumpkin pie. Suzanne was teaching her daughter-in-law how to make Phyllis turkey frame soup when we learned of her death.

Phyllis grew up in a family tradition of outdoor pursuits including camping, hiking and fishing. Her family spent some of their summer months from 1935 until 1941 in a mountain cabin on the south fork of Snoqualmie River in a cabin owned by a family friend. Phyllis was fond of telling a story about their visit to Yellowstone in 1934 where they stayed overnight on the way to Nebraska. Phyllis sat on the ground on an embankment and later discovered that the acidic soil had eaten away the back of her dress. Dick reports that his nine years older sister was brave when they saw his first bear when he was about 7 and he wanted to run away. Phyllis said it was just a little bear so why don we stand and watch it and it ambled safely away down the RR roadbed they had been walking on. Dick also reports that when he was about 12 he and Phyllis went for a long hike together up to a ridge in the Cascades and encountered a herd of mountain goats very close by which was exciting as they had only seen them before thru field glasses way up on the ridge. These Reeves traditions were passed down generously to the next generation of campers, hikers, and mountaineers in the family.

Phyllis was a dedicated volunteer and teacher. She taught teens to sew thru Singer Sewing centers and helped with a fashion show to showcase their work. Phyllis taught English to immigrants from their apartment buildings. When her own children were young she was always involved as a room parent, scout leader, school teacher, and chauffeur to the many activities she encouraged her children to participate in. Ted Jr. told stories of how he became interested in business under mothers careful tutelage as she taught him about food costs and operating margins when he ran a Kool-Aid stand. She encouraged him to experiment at home with recipes for baked continued...
