Obituary: Dr. James C. Jones, Jr. (Jim) departed this life on 29, 2016. Jim was a renaissance man: with four degrees and extensive training, he was an award winning physician, accomplished scientific researcher, self-taught musician and artist. Jim was born 27, 1959 in Newport News, Virginia to Eva Mae Harrison Jones and James C. Jones, Sr. The Jones family included older sister Delphine Anita, they made a home, first in the Tidewater area where Jims father worked for the Newport News Shipyard. Two years later, with Jims mother Eva expecting their third child, Michael, the family moved to the District of Columbia for James Sr. to attend law school at Howard University. As a child, Jim was quiet and focused on his studies showing early academic promise and adventurous spirit. The formative years of Jims education occurred in Prince Georges when the family joined some of the early African American families migrating from D.C. While Jim initially attended Greendale Elementary, his neighborhood school, within a few years he was participating in the social experiment of busing to desegregate the local school system. He went on to attend Bladensburg High School where he gravitated towards science and math, as well as foreign languages, studying German and French. Always a precocious learner, Jim finished high school at age 16, a year earlier than his class. He went on to enroll at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD. While a student at Hopkins, Jim pursued his interest in science and met the rigorous academic challenges of the Hopkins pre-medical curriculum. Also a committed athlete, Jim lettered in track and field, representing the Blue Jays in shot put both in local and regional meets. Upon successful completion of his Bachelors of Arts in General Science, Jim explored and traveled in Europe, living and working in London. Not one to long sideline his ambitions, Jim then returned to the states to begin active pursuit of his medical career. Beginning with work in San Francisco as a laboratory technician performing assays for Smith Klein Beecham and onto then pioneering research project with Dr. Juan Rodrigo at the University of California at San Francisco, Jim laid the groundwork for medical school and a penchant for methodical, meticulous preparation that formed the foundation for what would prove an expansive view of what it means to be a medical doctor. Enrolling in the medical school at Howard University in 1983, Jims interest in research combined with a work ethic learned from his father inspired him to garner recognition at prestigious conferences and competitions. Graduating in 1987, but not wanting ever to limit his educational pursuits, Jim went on to pursue his broad interests with passion and without concern for traditional pathways. Before residencies at Mount Sinai Hospital and at Howard University Hospital, he moved to New York accepting a scholarship at the New York Academy of Art. He was always skilled but the Masters program recognized his unusual ability confirming his unique use of both his right-and-left brain. He completed his residency in 1992. This was followed by a number of additional educational accolades: a Clinical Hematology Fellowship, where he ran the sickle cell clinic; a Fellowship at the National Institutes of in Transfusion Medicine; a NIH/NIAMS Molecular Genetics Fellowship where he was recognized with an Intramural Research Training Award – to name but a few. He applied to and was accepted at the Johns Hopkins University Business School where he attended part-time earning a Master of Science in Business majoring in Marketing Management. During this time, Jim opted for general practice working as an infectious disease officer for the District of Columbia. He simultaneously finished his studies at the business school and embarked on his longstanding interest in and passion for writing and illustrating, focus on a guide book for the layperson on breast cancer (The Illustrated Guide to Breast Diseases). As with his intellectual and vocational interests, Jims extracurricular pursuits were eclectic. Jim was a martial arts enthusiast, inspired as a high school student, he trained in Taekwondo and later Judo, earning his Brown Belt in both disciplines and competing at the Park Judo Club for over 20 years. When he wasn competing, Jim would serve as the on-site physician supervising the tournaments, attending to participants in need of medical attention. Jim loved to cook and experiment with all cuisines; he spent 30 years as a recovering vegetarian. He craved all ethnic foods and was an early and avid adopter of finding the best sushi. His interest in cinema included frequent visits to the box office, as well as attempts to create his own films. He often would sketch and photograph friends and family members. Jims comic book collection is prolific; he had many of the first-run series that have become blockbuster movies. What was clear to all who knew him is that Jims prodigious talents and curiosities made him creative, deeply human, and restless for challenges and making a difference. He pushed against traditional boundaries. His enthusiasm and often animated personality made him a natural clinician, patients responded well to his energetic engagement. He was compassionate and able to understand and manage challenging cases. Forever in search for more knowledge, he later opted to pursue an additional medical specialization, relocating to Nashville to join the psychiatry program at Meharry Medical . Jim would later find a vibrant work environment in Doctor Assisted Wellness and Recovery with professionals committed to treating addictions, illness and dedicated to wellness. This close-knit team at Doctor Assisted Wellness and Recovery became his extended family embracing him with a support system that he would rely on until his passing. Dr. Jones was a kind and gentle physician who touched the hearts of all that had the pleasure of knowing him. Because he had abundant energy and a lively sense of humor, his presence was always impactful. His colleagues respected him and his patients believed that he genuinely cared for their well-being. Jim had a strong sense of family, continued... |
