Obituary: Albert G. Johs passed away in Austin on 12, 2015 at the age of 97 after a short battle with liver cancer. Albert lived a healthy, vibrant live for 96 years and only suffered in a diminished capacity the last 6 months of his life. Albert grew up in the German community of Deutschberg near Matagorda Bay. He was one of 7 boys and had a sister Alice. Albert graduated Palacious High School and then went on to study accounting for 4 years at Rice University in Houston. Albert joined the US Army in 1941 and served in India during World War II. He was recalled after World War II to serve in Germany in the Military Intelligence where his German language skills proved useful during the Cold War. Albert was Honorably Discharged in 1961 at a final rank of Lt. Colonel where he retired in Austin Texas with his wife Elizabeth and his five children; Lance, Sherry, Anthony, Janna, and Monique. Albert then had a 22 year second career with the Texas Employment Commission and retired in 1984 at the age of 67. Never one to remain idle, he was active in The Austin Orchid Society, Texas Appraisal District, and served on several Austin City bond and wastewater management commissions. He was active in his homeowners association and worked tirelessly with the county trying to alleviate the propensity of Little Walnut Creek to flood surrounding properties. Albert enjoyed growing orchids with his wife, Elizabeth, and had three green houses at one time. He developed a hybrid orchid and named it after his wife Elizabeth. He was an avid traveler, taking numerous trips abroad with family friends. He especially enjoyed his time in Hawaii and Eastern Europe. Albert was a lifelong do it yourselfer, having converted his garage into a third bedroom for his growing family, trenched and laid his own gas line to join with the city line, and even dug his own water well by hand. Above all, Albert will be remembered as a loving husband and father who constantly sacrificed to give his children and grandchildren an education and a better life. He was always the one sneaking the cookies to the children, cracking jokes with the cashier or taking in the neighborhood strays - from dogs to raccoons. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Albert is survived by his sister Alice, his son Anthony, his daughter Monique, his grandsons; Zachary Johs-Gori, Randy Johs, Garreth Johs, and Brandon Johs; his granddaughters Sherrie Maturo and Brittany Johs-Gori; and numerous nephews, nieces and great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Elizabeth; his eldest son, Lance Johs, his daughters Sherry Hohertz and Janna Maturo; and his six brothers; John, Eric, Henry, Tony, Joe, and Frank Johs. The family would like to thank the care given him by Hospice Austin and Morn Patino. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Austin Humane Society may be made. The family will start receiving guests at 12:30, , 16, 2015 at Cook-Walden 6100 N Lamar Blvd., Austin, TX with services starting at 2:00 P.M. followed by full military honors at Austin Memorial Park. Condolences may be left for the family at www.cookwaldenfuneralhome.com |

Obituary: Dorothy Mae Johnstone, Nederland, Texas, ended her long and full life when she passed away 23, 2011, at Magnolia Manor in Groves, Texas. While we weren ready to let her go, she was ready to go and had said as much many times. Dorothy came into this world on 7, 1918, born to Otis and Ruth DuBois, in Beaumont, Texas She and her beloved sister Elwyn Cribbs, Pasadena, Texas, were French High School graduates. Dorothy was an active leader in sports at French High, and made many friends that she cherished all her life. It was likely that her participation in sports was one factor in her meeting Johnny Johnstone, another athlete, whom she married in 1937. Their first child, Sue, was born in 1940, followed by another daughter, Joy, in 1943. The United States was at war with the Empire of Japan, and Johnny joined the Marines to serve his country. When Joy was five months old, Dorothy and Sue made a train trip to San Diego to spend time with him before he was shipped overseas. I have a medallion with the inscription: The Hardest Job in the World is Being a Marines Wife. Dorothy did that job with grace, uncomplaining. her husband came home from the war, Dorothy gave birth to another daughter, Nita. By then, Dorothy and her family had moved to Port Arthur. During these years, whether hard or good times, Dorothy took her children to Church with her: first North End Baptist in Beaumont, then North End Baptist in Port Arthur. lived in Lakeview, a suburb of Port Arthur, where many houses were built for the returning veterans. Dorothy went to work for Sears, Roebuck in Port Arthur. She was soon promoted to head cashier, a position she held for many years until retirement. Dorothy enjoyed being a member of the Sears Bowling League, and was a consistent performer. She was also an ardent fisherman, along with her husband, and they both enjoyed camping and fishing on Sam Rayburn Reservoir. Dorothy and her husband moved to Nederland in the mid-seventies, where she joined the Seventh Street Baptist Church. She became a familiar figure on a certain pew, always joined by her loyal friends. In her private times, she never failed to pray for her family, or whomever God had laid on her heart. worship service on , a routine developed: Nita and Eddie McGowin would come by the church after their services were done, pick up Dorothy, and go out to eat. I doubt there is a restaurant in Mid- that they didn try. It was the high point of her week. Her oldest daughter, my wife Sue, has told me that her mother would stay up all night sewing, making a dress she didn know was needed until the day before. I hope such self-sacrifice still exists in the hearts of mothers in our culture today. Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Johnny Johnstone, and her daughter Joy Landry (Thermen) of Hillister. She is survived by her sister, Elwyn Cribbs of Pasadena, Texas; daughters, Sue Dammon (Gene) of Port Neches and Nita McGowin (Eddie) of Port Neches, seven grandchildren: John W. Dammon, Sr. (Kathy) of Bangkok, Thailand; Debby Addison (Nathan) of Port Neches; Buddy Landry Jr. (Penny) of Wildwood; Tom Landry (Cindy) of Hillister; Becky Dammon of Nederland (Darin Tauzin); Christie Cure (John) of Jasper; and Chuck Britten, Jr. (Shannon) of Bridge City; twenty-two great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren. Visitation will be at Forest Lawn in Beaumont from 5:00 to 8:00 PM, , 26, with the Service at Forest Lawn, 4955 Pine Street, Beaumont, at 2:00 PM on , 27, 2011. |
