Obituary: Robert Morris Johnston, 82, of Victoria, passed away 23, 2015. He was born 13, 1933 in Victoria, Texas to the late Harold Morley and Virginia Teal Morris Johnston.
Bob worked for the U.S. Postal Service before hiring-on in 1954 at Union Carbide from which he retired 40 years later.
He served in the National Guard, the Knights of Columbus and Serra Club.
Our Dads passion was working to preserve the historic land of his family located on the Fleming Prairie and San Antonio River Bottom of Victoria .
He is survived by his wife, Mary Rea Finehout. Dad leaves behind his daughters, Virginia Ball, husband John, Susan Rather, husband Allen, Kathryn Swiedom, husband Brian; sons, Robert Johnston, wife Elizabeth; David Johnston; Patrick Johnston; granddaughters, Mary Kay Ball Bielamowicz (Justin), Clara Ball Wood (Michael), Casey Johnston, Jacquelyn Rather Connally (Trice), Amanda Demel, Sarah Demel, Meagan Johnston Cunningham (Sean), Madelyn Rather, Katelyn Rather, Elizabeth Demel; grandsons, John Robert Ball, Shay Johnston (Hanna), Michael Demel, David Travis Johnston; three great granddaughters and six great grandsons; brothers, Harold Johnston and Thomas Johnston, wife Avis; many nieces and nephews; and Shane, Gina, Jake, Mariah, Alexa, Gianna Morris.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife and our dear Mother, Mary Jo Riley Johnston; daughter-in-law, Leticia Johnston; and sister-in-law, Melba Johnston.
A rosary will be recited 7:00 PM, , 24, 2015 at St. Marys Catholic Church, Deacon Jim Koenig officiating. The Mass will be held 2:00 PM, , 25, 2015 at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Fr. Gabriel Mensah officiating. Burial will immediately follow at Resurrection .
Pallbearers will be Robert Johnston, David Johnston, Patrick Johnston, John Robert Ball, Shay Johnston, David Travis Johnston and Michael Demel.

Obituary: Robert Lee (Bob) Johnston, Jr. died , 24 in Mesquite, Texas at the age of 92. He died peacefully at Christian after a brief illness. He was known to his family and many others as Pop. A characteristic he was well known for, and never lost, was his wit and sense of humor. His optimism, cheerfulness, and kindness made him someone that others enjoyed being with.

Mr. Johnston was a longtime resident of Abilene. He was born 10, 1922 in Spearman, Texas; the second of 3 children to R. L. Johnston, Sr. and Eula Storrs Johnston. He attended school in Boise City, Oklahoma, and after graduation attended business college in Amarillo, Texas.

Following the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, Bob enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He became a Signalman, serving aboard the USS Caldwell. 27, 1946, Bob married Vivian M. (Vee) Skillings, a Navy WAVE he had first known in Oklahoma. settled in Charleston, South Carolina, but soon returned to Oklahoma to engage in the grain business. Their first two children, Nina and Jeannie, were born during this period. Quite soon they moved to Abilene for Bob to attend Abilene Christian on the GI Bill. While earning his BA in English and MA in Greek from ACC, and for years afterward, Mr. Johnston preached for small congregations, including the Church of Christ in Bend, Texas. Two more children were born in Abilene, Lowell and Alison, and he began teaching at ACC.

The family moved to Austin for Bob to pursue a doctoral degree in the Classics at the University of Texas. For some time he was director of the Bible Chair at the University Avenue Church of Christ. Their fifth child, Brian, was born in Austin. In 1961 they returned to Abilene, where Mr. Johnston taught Greek, Latin and Hebrew. R. L. Johnston, Jr. was a man of integrity with a great love of learning and a gift for teaching. His students have gone on to serve as ministers, missionaries, university professors, and mayor of Abilene. his retirement from ACU, Mr. Johnston taught Latin in the Abilene Public Schools.

For many years Mr. and Mrs. Johnston were members of University Church of Christ. He was particularly interested in supporting ministries to Spanish speaking people, and made trips to Argentina and Mexico. Mr. Johnston remained a member of the U.S. Naval Reserve until he retired as a Master Chief, the highest enlisted rank. He was also involved for many years in scouting, both in his youth and when his sons were Boy Scouts. In addition, he was a Water Safety Instructor, teaching swimming classes and serving as a Life Guard. Later he joined the Kiwanis Club, and after studying family genealogy, he became a member of the Sons of the American Revolution. Mr. Johnston held offices in the Abilene chapter of SAR, and helped to establish the San Angelo SAR chapter.

The Johnstons put their energies into their family, Abilene Christian, and the community of Abilene. loved their neighbors on E.N. 23rd Street and the surrounding streets, visiting with everyone they met during their daily walks. also made good friends at places they frequented, especially the Harvest Moon restaurant. Mr. Johnston enjoyed woodworking, and he made walking canes as gifts.


Bob Johnston grew up in the Oklahoma panhandle as the son of pioneer families. He had a deep affection for the people and the history of the plains, and for nature. He was a lifelong visitor to Red River, New Mexico, taking family members for summer vacations. In later years Mr. Johnston spent countless hours caring for his lawn and garden.

Mrs. Vee Johnston died in 2008, after 62 years of marriage. She had been ill for several years, and Bob cared for her at home and later at Windcrest Alzheimers . Since early 2010 Mr. Johnston has lived in Richardson, Texas with his daughter Jeannie Mayeux and her husband Randy.

Mr. Johnston was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Wilma Nell Saunders, and his wife Vivian. He is survived by a brother, William B. (Bill) Johnston of Sweetwater, Texas; daughters Nina Johnston, of Farmers Branch, Texas; Jeannie Mayeux and her husband Randy of Richardson, Texas; Alison Peden and her husband Glenn of Grapevine, Texas; sons Lowell Johnston and his wife Teresa of Abilene; Brian Johnston of Corona, California; 19 grandchildren, and 24 great-grandchildren. He was the best sort of man, and will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered. Mr. and Mrs. Johnston served their country proudly, and they arranged to be buried with other veterans in the Texas State Veterans at Abilene.

Services will be held at the University Church of Christ, 733 EN 16th St. in Abilene on , 27, 2014 at 10:00a.m. Burial will follow in the Texas State Veterans under the direction of Elliott-Hamil , 542 Hickory St. Visitation will be evening from 6:00 to 8:00p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial gifts may be made to Abilene Christian University and sent to: ACU Box 29132, Abilene, Texas, 79699. Your gift will benefit the Arete Award, made to the outstanding 2nd year Greek student at ACU. In honor of Mr. Johnston, it is being renamed the R.L. Johnston, Jr. Award.

Obituary: Richard Louis (R.L.) Johnston passed away on Jan. 24, 2015, at the age of 84. R.L. proudly served in the Navy from 1950-1954 during the Korean War. He and his family moved to Bastrop in 1963, where he was employed by LCRA until he retired in 1987. He enjoyed raising cattle and spending time with his family and friends. He enlisted in the Marine Corp when he was 17 and was awarded the Purple Heart for his combat service in the Pacific Campaign of World War II and the Bronze Star during the Korean Conflict, where he attained the rank of Staff Sergeant. Obituary: Randal Johnston passed away peacefully at the age of 92. He was born in Brownsville, KY to Robert and Ermine Johnson and spent his youth in the hills of Kentucky.

He joined the Civilian Conservation Corps as a young man which took him to the mountains in Montana and Idaho to work on public infrastructure projects. the CCC he enlisted in the Army and attained the rank of Sergeant Major. He was assigned to various duty positions within several armored divisions and cavalry regiments throughout his career. He served in World War II, Korea, and Viet Nam. He was a tank platoon commander at 19 years of age during WWII and was involved in the invasion of Omaha Beach on D-day. He was highly decorated and received the Silver Star, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, and Purple Heart, among others. He retired in 1973 after serving 32 years in the Army, but was always a soldier at heart.

military retirement in Austin, TX he began a second career as a teachers assistant for Special Needs students with the Austin Independent School District. He had a passion for childrens education and he loved being involved with the Special Needs community.

He was predeceased by his wife of 57 years, Mary Deorsam Johnston, and a son, Ricky Lee, and 3 sisters and a brother. He is survived by his three daughters, Randy Frink and Shannon Johnston of Morgans Point Resort, TX, and Sandy Slater (Mike) of Bozeman, MT; grandsons Christopher Mack of Austin, TX and John Christensen (Denise) of Leander, TX; great grandchildren Tanner & Haley, who brought immeasurable joy to his life; and his faithful little companion dog, Gurley.

The family wishes to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at St. Davids North Austin Medical and Hospice Austin for their exceptional care, and his caregiver and friend, Dolly Mogonye. He will be missed by all.

A graveside service will be held 1, 2015 at 11AM at Austin Memorial Park, 2800 Hancock Drive, Austin, TX.

Obituary: Ralph Thomas Johnston, age 57, died on 11 in San Antonio, Texas. He was born in Washington D.C. on 25, 1954, to the late Norma Catherine Follin Johnston and the late Ralph Talbert Johnston. He is survived by his wife, Cecily Harshman Johnston and their sons, Thomas Cooper Johnston and Joseph Edward Johnston, and also by his siblings, Neil, Catherine, Patricia, Ruth Anne, and Philip, and their families. Ralph grew up in northern Virginia, Okinawa, and Maryland, and graduated from Glen Burnie High School in 1972. Having ushered in movie theaters, he joined the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees Local 224, and became a movie projectionist. He worked in many theaters in the greater Washington D.C. area, and became a labor union officer and pension trustee. While working full time, he attended the University of Maryland. When the National Air and Space Museum opened in 1975, Ralph became a projectionist in the cutting edge Imax Theater. A friend urged him to apply to the Yale School of Management, where he earned a Master of Public and Private Management degree in 1986. He also met his future wife, Cecily. graduation, he pursued a career in museum administration and consulting. He became the Director of Exhibits at the Museum of Flight in Seattle, Washington, which was undergoing a major expansion, eventually becoming the Deputy Executive Director. In 1989 ground was broken for the Virginia Air and Space and Hampton Roads History in Hampton, Virginia. Ralph was hired as its first Executive Director. He opened the $29.7 million project on time and on budget. In 1997, Odyssey, The Maritime Discovery in Seattle, Washington hired Ralph as its Executive Director, with a mandate to complete the project and begin operations, which he did, on time and on budget. Between these positions, Ralph consulted to museum projects, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the corporate museum of American Airlines, the California Museum of Science and Industry, the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum, the USS Missouri Memorial Chief Petty Officers Legacy , and the Christa McAuliffe Planetarium expansion. He was also an expert witness in a contract dispute. Ralph and Cecily were married in 1990 in Neversink, New York. When their sons were young, he became involved with Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in the Magnolia neighborhood of Seattle. volunteering in a variety of capacities, he became the editor of the parishs fiftieth anniversary book, the President of the Parish Council, and the President of the Building Committee, helping to plan an expansion for the parish school. He was also the uniform coordinator for the Magnolia Little League, and a member of the Ballard Food Bank board. In 2004 Ralph and his family moved to San Antonio, Texas where he began volunteering at the parish school, The Atonement Academy. This led to positions as the textbook inventory manager, the Counselor, an instructor in Technology, Government, and Economics, a member of the School Council, and eventually the Headmaster. He also volunteered at the parish, Our Lady of the Atonement, having been drawn to its Anglican Use liturgy. He became involved in the network of Anglican Use parishes, wrote articles, and attended annual conferences where he became the Master of Ceremonies. Ralph was a contrarian and an original thinker, with a gift for strengthening organizations and an inclination to help in whatever ways were needed. He is greatly missed.
