Obituary: Cooking is like love. It should be entered into with abandon or not at all. While an excellent cook, cooking was not something that Leotis favored. Except at the holidays or birthdays. Except when she was teaching someone an heirloom family recipe. Except when she was snapping beans or shredding chicken reminiscing about everything and nothing. Except when she was cooking in company and with love. Because love was something that Leotis entered into with abandon. She had a gift for loving and went through life building family from the people she collected. Dessie Leotis Jones came into the world 1, 1928, the fourth daughter born to Otis Lee and Gladys Vera (Paddock) Jones, on a farm near San Angelo, Texas. Her mother passed away when Leotis was two years old. Between her own wisps of memory and the stories her sisters told, Leotis built an image of motherhood that she both strove to embody and to bring out in others – laughter, joy, humor, intelligence and unconditional love. And throughout her life people responded. Leotis lived her life determined to see the good. She lived in absolute certainty of a loving God and knew that angels are among us and take an interest in our daily welfare. She relied upon strong angels – the Archangel Michael was her special angel. Always an idealist and a dreamer, Leotis knew that while miracles may just happen, realizing your dreams can take work and effort. And she worked unrelentingly to make dreams become reality – both her own dreams and the dreams of others. She married Samuel Keyes Johnston on her nineteenth birthday and they were together for more than 65 years. Really together. In the several years before their children were born, she followed Sam from Texas to Calgary and back again several times. During one of their stays in Houston she parlayed her sense of style to obtain a ladies buyer job for Foleys [now Macys]. She travelled back to Houston from Calgary for the last time a little ahead of Sam for the birth of their first child, Rick. Kitsy came along almost three years later. A good life – wife, mother of two young children, a good neighbor – she worked side by side with Sam to start up Johnston Drilling – his big dream. In addition to finance, accounting and payroll she rolled up her sleeves and helped build and maintain the drilling rigs. Occasionally she offered flashes of practical brilliance in response to pesky engineering problems – much to the surprise of the men around her. Because of builders delays, her youngest, Karlan, almost came home from the hospital to an apartment at the Shop. Leotis loved to create and brought a childlike joy to her artistic endeavors. She was an accomplished seamstress and for some years had two sewing machines in service at once to create everything from dance costumes to slipcovers to clothing for herself and her family. Never content with merely following directions, she always took her creations to a higher level of style or whimsy. Some of the costumes she designed for her girls through a couple decades of dance recitals got – almost – as big an ovation as the dances. Where some women would bake, Leotis made candles. Candles for gifts. Candles for fundraisers. Sand, ice, driftwood, Spanish moss, shells, pebbles, and cans transformed by a lively imagination. When Kitsys dance partner started a studio of her own and a fundraiser was needed to provide partial assistance to dance convention attendees, Leotis broke out the film editing equipment and created two thirty minute home movies of the girls dancing through the years. [Other mothers brought baked goods for the concession stand.] When her children were all but grown she was called to counsel others. To this end she went back to school to pursue a degree in Psychology and Social Work. When she faced challenges from some of the coursework – especially coursework she found irrelevant to her calling – she turned them over to God in the certain knowledge that He would she her through. In 1980, Leotis and Sam realized their dream of living in a stone house on a Lake. The Lake was a source of peace and strength for them both for more than 30 years. Always the good neighbor, it didn take Leotis long to become a fixture in Highland Haven and in her new church. She was generous with her time and life experience, becoming an elder in her church and taking on counselees with love and empathy. Leotis was determined to be self-reliant and she was resourceful. Some mistook this for pride; but it wasn really. Although the occasions where she asked for help were rare; she had a gift for accepting help when offered with grace and a minimum of fuss. She was always close to her sisters. Despite being four – then five – very different, distinct personalities with very diverse life goals they were always each others Rock, each others . Reunions were more frequent once the Johnstons were at the Lake – annual three-day marathons of food, kids, grandkids, catching up and looking back that were physically exhausting, but emotionally and spiritually renewing for Leotis. Just four years after moving to the Lake, Sam suffered surgical complications which led to a brain injury. Leotiss determination and care saw him rehabilitated past all expectation. Over the next 27 years, she invested her heart and soul into ensuring that Sam – that both of them – lived well. Her promise to Sam was that she would not leave him behind – a gutsy promise to make – and she kept that promise. She cherished every day they had together until God called Sam back in of 2013. Although Sams care was her first priority, she still made time for counseling, for friends, and for family. She was there to help when all five of her grandchildren were born – including the one born most inconveniently in New Hampshire. Leotis had a life-changing continued... |
