Obituary: Eulogy of Cheryl Lynn Smith Jaeger

The only condolence of a life cut short is that it was lived fully, richly, and more lovely than most. Cheryl Lynn Smith Jaeger lived her life with a fullness we admired, a richness we envied, and a loveliness we cherished. 7th, 2010 marked the end of her journey with us and the beginning of her next journey, but those of us who loved her look forward to being with her again when our time comes.

Sherris journey with us began on 29, 1946 in Dallas, Texas. The fourth child of A.J. and Kathleen Smith, she didn care much for the fifth child that came along two years later, until she was able to co-opt him and convince him that she was really the boss. The youngest was the easiest of the five kids to raise, Kathleen will tell you, because Sherri was his Drill Sergeant.

In 1957 the Smith family moved to Houston, Texas, where Sherri continued her education and directing of her younger brother. This often included scrutinizing and hazing his choice of girlfriends. A typical teenager in many ways, she was very social and enjoyed spending time with her friends.

In 1963 Sherri gave birth to Theresa Lynn and the two started raising each other. She worked for Havertys Furniture to pay the bills. When Theresa was two, they started seeing a stray fella named Kenneth (Ken) Jaeger and adopted him on 27th, 1967. Their family was underway.

Now Ken was a businessman and knew a good business move when he saw it. When he bargained for Sherri as a life partner, he also saw a keen business partner. She didn always see herself in that roll, but slowly migrated to it over the years. When Ken went into the plumbing business, she kept books and did what she had to. When Ken went into the paving business with a partner and the partners wife wanted to keep the books, she started working at the District Clerks office where she quickly proved her worth. Within a very short time she was promoted to a supervisory position.

In 1980 Sherri and Ken built a house together in Spring, Texas. It was around this time Ken found some property a short distance away from the house in Spring that looked like a good investment. That purchase eventually spawned the plan to build a mobile home and RV park. Construction of Spring Oaks began in 1982. It started modestly and even struggled for a while.

Ken and Sherri had tried for many years to have more children; after a while it didn seem possible. In 1983, just as Theresa was about to leave the nest, Sherris world was rocked with the news and in of that year, Kelli was born. It wasn long after that Theresa became a mom too, so mother and daughter raised two daughters together.

When Kens partner decided he couldn take any more with the recession, A.J and Kathleen bought him out. It was then that Sherri took on a more active role in the day-to-day affairs in the business. The challenges were immense with the demands of her family and a struggling business. She rarely complained. To say she was a trouper would be a gross understatement. However, their perseverance started paying off in the early 1990s and they added mini-storage. It was hard work with long hours and always lots to learn. Sherri navigated all the obstacles with determination and the hardest of work. Her last challenge was the sale of Spring Oaks which was completed in 2009.

In spite of her lack of formal education, Sherri proved herself more than capable in anything she set her mind to. While not a perfectionist, she would not stop until she got it right. The books had to balance to the penny. She would often work late into the night until she understood it or got it done.

At the same time, she never sacrificed the needs of her family. If her daughters needed her, she would stop what she was doing to play, talk, drive, or whatever was needed. She even did school detention with Kelli one afternoon and got in trouble with the teacher for balancing her checkbook.

One last example of her selflessness was when granddaughter Katie announced she was about to expand the family. Sherri took on helping her through a very tough pregnancy in spite of her own health issues. When Bella arrived in of last year, Sherri couldn have been more proud. She said, I didn think I could ever love a baby so much as I love my Bella; even more than my others. but in a different way. She loved her Bella and proudly showed her off to anyone who would look.

She took care of all her responsibilities to the letter and still had time for others. She was always there for her Momma and Daddy. She took care of her brothers, even the older ones. She took care of nephews and nieces. She took care of neighbors and friends. She took care of customers and sometimes even strangers. She took care of us all and gave willingly without regard to it being earned or even deserved. She was just a little like her Father though, in that she did like the position of having you owe her.

She was called by many names other than her given one: Sherri, Momma, Meme, Aunt Sherri, Aunt Chocolate, Sally, The Fun Aunt, and Hottie Auntie Sherri. She was our rock, our anchor, and the binding of the book that is her family. All were drawn to her as to a campfire. We felt comfortable in her loving attention. being with her we felt better about ourselves and looked forward to being with her again. She has continued...
