Obituary: Mr I.M. Rozario

Born 10/19/1926 in Malaysia.
Departed 11/17/14 Missouri City Texas, USA.

Leaving behind beloved wife Philomena and loving children, Gillbert, Elizabeth & Ignatius Rozario, son-in-law Jeffrey, daughter-in-law Milinda. Devoted grandchildren Michael and Angela Rozario.

Our Father was born in Malaysia in 1926 and was taken to India as an infant by his mother. He was raised by his mother in his rural farming village of Periaverseely, India. Being the oldest of five, father was responsible for taking care of his mother and siblings while his father lived and worked in Malaysia. He attended elementary and middle school in his rural village while helping to care for his sibs. There was no running water or electricity in his village and he had to study under the one street light they had in the village. To make ends meet, he helped his mother by working in the fields and selling food to the workers in the fields when he was not in school.

Recognized as a promising student in his village and financed by the generosity of an unknown patron, to whom he was always grateful, he was able to attend St Josephs boarding school in Cuddalore, India. So at the age of thirteen, traveling alone, he boarded the train to Cuddalore and enrolled in the boarding school.

He often spoke of the difficulties of attending a rural boarding school in India at that time. He spoke of the monotony of eating fish and left over fish six times a week, the strict discipline and stringently prescribed times for homework, sports and prayers. He talked about the yearly outing that, although being anxiously anticipated by the schoolboys, consisted of a 20 mile walk to the picnic grounds of an old mansion and another 20 mile walk back. He spoke of the joyful songs they would sing on their long walks. He also talked about boarding the train back to his village at the end of the school year, the pain of leaving his village to start the next school year and how he cried every time because he knew he was not going to see his mother again for another year.
He talked of the snacks from home that he carried back to school, and how they would run out within a few weeks leaving him with only the repetitive food of boarding school.

In spite of all this, he was a tenacious and determined student. He was able to endure the hardships and spartan conditions and, as such was the only student from his village that stayed and completed his High School education. As harsh as it was, he said that his life was indelibly shaped by the boarding school experience

When he completed high school, he was enrolled in St Josephs college, a Jesuit college in Tiruchi, by his cousin who paid for his first year of college. He stayed in the dorm and studied. At the end of his first year of college, without funding for the subsequent school years, he enrolled in the British Indian Army and was sent to Madras for basic training. He was then sent to Jhansi in Northern India, to join the battalion there. He remained in the Indian army for two years, until the conclusion of the second world war and was then honorably discharged from the army. Upon his discharge, he re-enrolled in college on the Indian GI bill. He always remained grateful for the GI bill that paid for his education. Since he could not afford text books and due the generosity of librarians, he was surreptitiously allowed long extensions of text books. He made up for lost time by completing two years of college in just one year and became the first college graduate in his village. He was always grateful for the life that education provided for him and us.

his graduation, he taught in a rural school in Arialur, India, for a year and a half. He commuted to his school on a bicycle, paid 30 rupees a month for room and board, and one rupee a month for daily fresh water. At the end of a year and a half, his father asked him to go back to Malaysia as he did not see a promising future at that time for a budding teacher, in India.

So, in 1954, father returned to Malaysia and started teaching in various private and parochial schools until he was able to obtain a position as a teacher in a government high school. He taught at Methodist noon School in Kampar, Perak and Methodist English School, Tanjung Malim, Perak.

He started teaching in Kajang High School,Selangor in 1962. Many times he would tell about having to deal with boys who, having grown their hair longer than allowed, needed to be disciplined. His solution was always to cut their hair in wild and hideous ways which would motivate them to straight away call a barber for a proper haircut. He was a dedicated teacher who refused to do any private tutoring because he felt that all his students deserved the best, not just those who could afford tutoring. Father often said It doesn matter what race the students are. are all my students. He was transferred from Kajang High School to a rural village school in 1980. He was known as datuk ie grandfather, in the school and was always impressed with the respect shown to teachers in the village. He retired from teaching high school in 1981.

his retirement from teaching at the age of 55, he started working in several part time teaching jobs to pay for our education in the United States. He sacrificed his retirement dreams when he sold his dream property of one fifth of an acre of land where he had plans to build a home and start a garden, in order to pay for continued...
