Obituary: Donald Edward Hickok 15, 1936- 17, 2014 Don Hickok was the eldest of 7, born into a coal mining family in Bud, WV. graduating from Herndon High School, he enlisted in the United States Air Force. His military career took him to Columbus, OH, Tampa, FL, Korea, Charleston, WV, Santa Barbara, CA, Johnston Atoll, and he eventually retired after 22 years of military service as a Chief Master Sargent with the 1972nd Communications Squadron at Eglin Air Force Base in Fort Walton Beach, Florida. Don continued to live in the same house in the Florida panhandle for the remainder of his years. During this time, he owned a swimming pool installation company and he ran his own handy man company. While helping others was his new career, he never turned anyone away who needed a hand. It just wasn his nature. It didn matter if it was a neighbor with a dishwasher leak or a group of elementary school boys who would stop by when their bicycles needed repaired. Everyone who knew Don, knew that if you needed help, you should Let Don Do It! For many years, Don coached Little League baseball in Mary Esther. You never knew when you would drive by and he might be throwing pitches with a struggling pitcher or dragging the infield so the playing conditions would be optimal for the kids. One year he even orchestrated getting funds to re-sod the field, and then did the sodding himself! He sure loved spending time at that ball park and counting pitches for those boys. He always loved to eat in dive restaurants and that is exactly how he met his wife of 22 years, Lynda McCormick Hickok of Niceville, Florida. He really enjoyed traveling, eating out and watching Duck Dynasty with Lynda. Don also loved telling tall tales and instigating trouble. Then he would break out in a big belly laugh that would make his face crinkle all up! He NEVER met a stranger. He had a conversation for anyone he ever encountered. It might not be exactly truthful, but it was always interesting and entertaining! What he really didn like were chicken and green beans. Don passed away on , 17th at Fort Walton Beach Medical . Naturally, Lynda was by his side. In previous years, Don lost many loved ones. Those included: his two beloved daughters, Dawn Hickok and Sharron Hickok Taylor, his parents Gordon and Mae Hickok, his brothers Larry and Jerry Hickok and his sister Gordenia Shrewsbury. Those left to enjoy their memories of him include his beloved wife Lynda, his son Mike Hickok of Texas, his daughter Cherri (Hickok) and husband Robert Johns of Cary, NC, his step daughter Tracey (Gunter) and husband Mike Dodson of Pensacola, Florida, his step son Harvey Butch Gunter of Fort Walton Beach, his extra daughter Julie (Shireman) and husband Karlin Costa of Houston Texas, 16 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, his brothers Jim and Norma Hickok of Mabscott, WV, Paul and Hazel Hickok of Cool Ridge, WV and Bill Hickok of Concord, NC. Don will also be terribly missed by his 8 fur babies! At Dons request there will be no services. Anyone who wishes to express their condolences or just tell a funny Don story may contact Lynda or a family member directly. Lynda will be planning a celebration picnic for friends and family in late summer. If you knew him, you are invited! |
