Obituary: William Halvorson was born on 26, 1928 on a dairy farm in Menomonie, Wisconsin, to George Halvorson and Katherine Dietsche. He had two older brothers; Harry and Keith. George was a dairy farmer, and Katherine, a school teacher, story writer, and musician, who was active in the community. Bill was ordered to play on a piano recital at the age of 4 for an event held by the PTA, for which his mother Katherine was the programming chairman. He said he dreaded it, but when it happened, he really loved doing it. He had piano lessons from the nuns at the church. He also learned the clarinet and played with his Dad, who also played clarinet, in the Ludington Guard band. Musical talent was a given in the Halvorson clan. His Aunt Vera could play anything on the piano by ear, in any key. Harry played the guitar, and around the family piano, a lot of singing was done. Later, when he met Patricia J von Trebra, also an accomplished musician, at a fraternity party in Madison, where everyone stood around and sang, she was attracted to him because he sang in tune! He was a good student, and of course wanted to go to college; the family finances forbade paying for college tuition. So Bill joined the US Army, playing alto saxophone and leading a Zoot Suit-wearing American jazz combo based in Okinawa, Japan as a member of the Special Services. a year and a half overseas, Bill marched into the office of the president of UW Stout and offered him a deal: he would start the university football team in exchange for college tuition for him and his friends; with that, he was able to get himself and some of his buddies from High School admitted. He attended UW Stout for a while, then transferred to the U of Michigan on a football scholarship. A minor injury caused him to transfer back to UW Madison, where he was a member of one of the the first Actuarial Classes. He was also a member of the Chi Phi fraternity. Bill graduated with a BBA from the U. of Wisconsin in 1950 and an MBA as well in 1951, majoring in Actuarial Science with Minors in Investments and Insurance, while Pat graduated with Bachelors and Masters degrees in Psychology. Bill married Patricia on 27, 1951, and they started their married life in New York City, both working for NY Life Insurance Co. living in Manhattan, they moved to New Rochelle, where their first son Robert was born in 1953. Bill worked at NY Life until 1956, when he accepted a position with the new Consulting Actuarial firm, Milliman and Robertson (M&R), in San Francisco. This was the first office opened outside of the original Seattle office of M&R, and Bill was the fourth employee. Living in California, three more children were born: James, Janet, and Audrey, over a period of 5 years. Both he and Patricia were longing for the Midwestern life that they were familiar with, so they returned to Wisconsin, where Bill started the Milwaukee office of the firm. resided in a Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired home on Upper Nashotah Lake outside of Oconomowoc Wisconsin, where their last daughter Katherine was born in 1964. All 5 children graduated from Oconomowoc High School, and from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. During this time, Halvorson opened up two more M&R offices in Chicago and St. Louis. He also served as president of both the Society of Actuaries and the American Academy of Actuaries. He is widely recognized as one of the most important health actuaries of his time. Increasingly, Halvorson became interested in Economic Research. He combined his interest in investments with his Actuarial expertise to create, write, and develop his own formulas which applied probability and statistics to the stock market and investing. This side-line career was so successful that he was able to retire at the age of 54, and move with his wife Patricia down to Naples, Florida, in 1982. For a short time, Bill relaxed in the sun and on the golf course. However, his desire to be productive and the advent of the availability of Personal Computers led him to form his own company, Halvorson Research Associates, and work on this full time. Meanwhile, Halvorson improved his golf, becoming a local champion with a 5-handicap. At age 75, he was diagnosed with Parkinsons disease. He fought the disease optimistically, always hoping that a cure would be discovered. Gradually his golf game and mobility decreased, but he remained sharp and interested in many ideas and of course his family. He died peacefully from complications arising from Parkinsons on 5, 2016, Labor Day, in Naples, Florida. He is survived by his wife Patricia, son Robert, daughters Janet, Audrey and Katherine, 6 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, James, and his two brothers Harry and Keith. Donations may be made to the University of Wisconsin Foundation. Family services were private. Additional services to be announced. |
