Obituary: Vera Hanshaw 1918 - 2014 Charles Hanshaw 1915 - 2005 Vera and Charlie Hanshaw have passed. Vera succumbed to heart failure on 5, 2014 at 96. Charlie passed from heart failure at his Old Saybrook home in 2005 at age 90. The quintessential good guy, Charles "Charlie" Henry Hanshaw was born 14, 1915, in Afton, OK. A track star in high school, he earned a scholarship to the U. of Southern CA, where he studied for two years, & transferred to CA State U., Davis to study agriculture. Born Vera Olive Hanson on Jan. 22, 1918, in Vallejo, CA, she spent her childhood as part of a large Swedish family in Castro Valley, CA. She studied at San Jose State U. Married in 1940 in the San Francisco area, Vera & Charlie shared 65 years of marriage. The young couple & their two young girls settled in Whittier, CA. He was a city fireman & loved to play golf and tennis. Vera was a avid gardener, with the soul of an artist. Vera began pottery in the 1960s. In the 1970s Charlie, Vera and the kiln moved to the Exmore, VA where Vera sold pottery on Chincoteague Is. & Charlie got his dream of raising thoroughbred horses. In the 1980s they built a house overlooking a marsh in Old Saybrook, CT. Spring & summer Charlie would be on the Fenwick links. Vera planted a beautiful garden which she generously shared with deer. Winters were spent in Hawaii where they had an active social life playing tennis and golf. Vera enjoyed painting tropical fish as well as swimming with them. As a widow, Vera rented an apartment on her daughter, Nancy's property in Old Lyme. Following a stroke in 2008, Vera moved to Madison House. At Charlie's death, he was survived by his wife, Vera Hanshaw of Old Saybrook, daughters, Nancy M. Connell (Bill Connell d. 2010) of Old Lyme, CT, and Loret Sayler (Jack Sayler) of La Habra Heights, CA, grandchildren Morgan Sayler (Leesa Coble) and Blythe Sayler Loe (Darren Loe) all of Whittier, CA and Old Saybrook friends, Jim & Judy Grove and Gene & Mike Neville. In addition to the above, Vera is survived by great grandson, James T. Loe of Whittier and northern CA siblings Doris Walker, 87, Ray Hanson, 92, and Ken Hanson, 91 (Judy Hanson). Obituary: Oscar H. Hansen, 72 of Niantic, formerly of Holliston, MA., passed away 1, 2015, at the Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London, CT. He was born May 8, 1943 in Berlin, New Hampshire, the son of Lena (Arsenault) Hansen and the late Oscar H. Hansen. He graduated from the New England Institute of Embalming and was a licensed funeral director for a few years and later went into the Auto Wholesale industry. A corvette car buff, he enjoyed listening to the oldies of the 50 and 60s and he was very fond of his pet dogs. In addition to his mother, survivors include his wife, Patricia (Moody) Hansen, whom he married on 25, 1965 in St. Sebastian Church, Middletown, CT; two sons, Erik J. Hansen and his wife Karena of Northborough, MA and Michael O. Hansen and his wife, Heather of Franklin, MA; a daughter, Kirsten D. Jerome and her husband, Christopher of Franklin, MA and eight grandchildren, Connor, Ellyna, Caden, Nora, Drew and Vera Hansen, Sarah and Noah Garofalo. The family will receive relatives and friends on , (Aug. 3rd) from 5-7 pm at the Thomas L. Neilan & Sons , 48 Grand Street, Niantic, CT. The funeral will assemble on (Aug 4th) at 10:15 am at the Thomas L. Neilan & Sons , 48 Grand Street, Niantic, CT. and proceed to St. Agnes Church, Haigh Avenue, Niantic for a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 am. Interment will follow in St. Sebastian , Middlefield, CT In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in memory of Oscar Hansen to support pancreatic cancer research and patient care at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, P.O.
