Obituary: 1/26/1922 4/22/2015 H. Oliver Ollie Hayashi H. (Hirotaki) Oliver Hayashi passed away 22, 2015 at the VA Hospital of pneumonia. Born in Grand Junction on 26, 1922, he attended local schools and Mesa Junior . His childhood was spent in the downtown area known as the Barbary Coast within a few blocks of the train station which was the main transportation hub at the time. There were many first generation immigrant families in this area, the Basques, the Greeks and the Italians. Sandlot baseball games were often cut short because one family would own a bat and one family a ball. If you didn like the way a play was called, you took your equipment home and that was the end of the game. The family home was the converted Coors depot that Ollies dad purchased from Adolph Coors in 1926. While at Grand Junction High School, Ollie won the state wrestling championship three straight years. He also won the state championship for the two years he attended Mesa Junior . receiving his Associates degree from Mesa Junior in 1942, he joined the US Army and was assigned to the famous 442 Regimental Combat Team. This regiment was composed almost entirely of American soldiers of Japanese ancestry despite the fact that many of their families were subject to internment. The 442nd was the most decorated unit for its size and length of service in the history of American warfare. Of 14,000 men who served, nearly 9,500 earned Purple Hearts and the unit was awarded eight Presidential Unit Citations. Twenty-one members were awarded Medals of Honor. Ollie was one of 20 men alive out of 200 of K who rescued the Lost Battalion from the 36th Texas Division in the Vosges Mountains in northern France near the German border. Returning from the war, Ollie joined the family business at the Royal Grill, a restaurant and bar located on Colorado Ave. It was in the bar late one night that Ollie swore a Mafia hitman came in for a drink before continuing on his journey. Ollie said that the man asked where the back door was located and he sat where he could constantly look at the front door. During the 1950s uranium boom, Ollie and his then wife, Kay, formed the KOA and ventured into the mining business. The crew missed the vein by 5 feet and Ollie sold the claim to Climax Uranium who eventually pulled over $1 million in yellow gold from the mine. Ollies next venture was to partner with Archie Tilton to create the United Sand and Gravel/ United Redi-Mix companies. The company was sold to Red Nesbitt in the early 1960s. It was back to the restaurant business in the 1960s. Ollie and Kay bought and ran the Pony Express Restaurant located at 345 Main Street. It was an all you can eat buffet for $1.49. Later, the Dramatic Attic was created upstairs from the restaurant to present old-fashioned melodramas on weekend nights. Jim Stewart and his wife Carol wrote and performed the melodramas. People were turned away due to a full house many times. As if this didn keep him busy enough, Ollie and Kay were asked to operate the restaurant portion of the Royal Inn Motel by Ed Settle. Lastly Ollie owned and operated the Trailways Coffee Shop at the bus depot and the Pony Express Drive-Ins in Fruita and on Orchard Mesa for a number of years, before retiring to the real estate business and fishing on the Grand Mesa. Later he delivered countless meals for the Gray Gourmet and was a volunteer at the Grand Junction VA Hospital. Ollie was married to Kay (Aoki) Hayashi and later divorced. He married Gertrude Wilder in 1981. He is preceded in death by his parents, sister and two brothers. He is survived by his wife Gertie, brother Harry of St. Louis, MO; sons Joseph (Joey) of Denver, CO and Alan of Carlsbad, CA; step-son Charles Wilder, daughters Karen (Robert Traylor) and Shanna Hayashi, all of Grand Junction, grandchildren Brian Hayashi, Debra Dodson, Julia Traylor, and Trevor Wilder. A military service will take place at the Veterans Memorial of Western Colorado 2830 D Rd. on May 11, 2015 at 1p.m. In lieu of flowers, please make a memorial donation to the Grand Junction VA Volunteer Program in Ollies name, 2121 North Ave., Grand Jct., CO 81501. |
