Obituary: Judith Anne Helfrich Hassed was born to parents Howard and Elsa Helfrich in Wheaton, Illinois, on 25, 1930. She was the youngest of four children, two older brothers, John and Neil, and an older sister, Janet. Her father died when she was nine, but not before he could instill dreams, aspirations and inspiration into Judith. One of Judith’s childhood dreams was to own her own horse. Considering the fact that no one in her family was familiar with horses, and they lived in the city, it was an unlikely dream. However, she saved her own money and eventually was able to buy her first horse. She had him all through high school, and even rode out to Grinnell, Iowa in a cattle truck with him when she attended Grinnell as a freshman. The horse stayed home in the following years, and by the time she graduated in 1952, he had passed on. Judith met James Hassed shortly after college when she was taking care of her dying mother. It was love at first sight, and they were married before Christmas in 1952. her mother died, they moved to Colorado to pursue their dreams out west. began in Denver where their oldest child, Anne, was born. soon moved to Greeley, Colorado, so James could start his own practice. In the next four years, they had another daughter, Susan, a son, Jim, and another son, David. bought a house on an acreage, and set about raising their family. James’s pioneer roots were a good complement to Judith’s adventurous spirit. Between the two of them, they dreamed of many things, and began to try and make some of those dreams come true. In a true partnership, James bought a herd of Icelandic ponies thinking it would be a good business at some point in the future. Judith added to this idea by acquiring several Arabian horses with the idea of producing a mid-size horse for a market that was not being served. had four children, two of which were old enough to learn to ride, and later be able to help market their future stock. were enthusiastic about pursuing this dream, and in short order, had fenced their entire property and built a barn. Never one to hold back, Judith gave her whole-hearted support to James’s money-making plan. James also became involved in a land development enterprise. Again, Judith supported him in this effort, and did everything in her power to encourage its pursuit. Unfortunately, James suddenly died of a heart attack when Judith was only thirty-two years old. She was left with four children ages four to nine, approximately thirty horses and ponies, and a third interest (along with the bills) in a land development proposition. She had to sell most of the horses and ponies as well as her interest in the land project. Judith faced all the hardships a single parent faces, but at the time, it was not such a common situation, so there was very little support for her. There were no support agencies as there are now, and her brothers encouraged her to send her children to live with other relatives for their upbringing. She felt strongly that the family needed to stay together, and set about doing that with a single-minded determination. Judith was not one to be told she couldn’t do something—anything! Her education was not vocational by nature—an English major and a Classics minor—so she was not readily employable. She strongly felt her young children needed her to be home when they came home from school. She remained a stay at home mom and made ends meet with what she had available. She refused to act as though her family was in financial trouble, and kept her financial struggles private, away from her children’s thoughts. She did not raise her children as though they were poor. Two years after James died Judith sold their home and used the proceeds to build a house and barn on an acreage she had retained from the sale of her interest in the land development project. At that time, single women did not generally undertake such a project. She was not one to be told she could not do something. It was during this time that she first purchased and raised a Rottweiler. About four years later, Judith realized she would have to enter the work force. By now, the children were older and more able to spend time on their own. In addition, their college years were fast approaching, and she needed to try and be ready for additional financial burdens. She knew she needed a stronger, more focused education in order to get a better job, and with that in mind, she sold the house and moved the family to Illinois so she could attend the University of Chicago to study Classical Languages. Her plan was to obtain an advanced degree so she could earn a higher paying job. Unfortunately, attending college again with all the family responsibilities and expense for four teenage children was too much, and Judith decided after a year of study that she needed to take a job instead. She became a school secretary, a job she held for the next five years. It was while she lived in Illinois that she began raising Rottweilers in earnest, and joined the Medallion Rottweiler Club. During her time there, she became quite active in the show circuit, winning many awards for her dogs along the way. She served as President of the Medallion Rottweiler Club as well. David, the youngest, finished high school, Judith decided to move back to Colorado. She had missed it much more than she realized she would, and her oldest three children had already moved back to live in Colorado Springs. She moved to Colorado Springs in order to be near her children. She purchased a home in the area known as Black Forest and made her home there for continued... |
