Obituary: David Hughes 4-19-1935 to 3-01-2011 David Hughes, born in Wichita, Kansas, 19, 1935 to George M. Hughes and Virginia Adeline Smith. David was the youngest of the four boys. His brothers were Bob, James, and Jack Hughes. Early life for Dave was anything but easy. When Dave was 4, his parents divorced and Virginia and the four boys moved to Clark, MO. to stay with his Uncle John. Two years later, Dave was placed in an orphan home in St. Louis and lived there for 4 years. the orphanage, Dave stayed with other relatives, moving to Kansas City to live with his oldest brother until he graduated from high school. At 18, Dave joined the Navy and served for two years. David had 4 children from his first marriage, Debra, Donald, Marcia and Gregory. Greg passed away in the spring of 2007. Dave also has eight grandchildren and one great grand child. Dave and Nada were married in 1972 and lived in the Kent area for 18 years. He has two step children, Tina and Keith who lived with them until graduation. Dave worked most of his life in the car business, selling and managing. Occasionally he would change occupations, working at Owens Corning, Fredrick & Nelsons, on the pipeline in Alaska to name a few. In 1984, he opened a used car lot in Puyallup, which he had until 1990. Dave had a major stroke in 1990 when he was 54 years old, and so at that time moved to Auburn area, living there for over 20 years. Dave didn have a lot of hobbies, but he loved baseball and has quite a baseball collection. He watched every Mariners game on TV and once traveled to Arizona for Mariners spring training. He loved his pets, Rusty, the Dachshund, Michin, the Siamese Cat and Charcoal, the rescued kitty. He took Rusty with him everywhere he went. Rusty, who is now 8 years old, continues to be a regular fixture at the grocery store, the deli and the pharmacy. Dave loved to travel, cruising from Alaska to Vancouver BC, cruising the Panama Canal from Fort Lauderdale, Florida to Vancouver, BC and also took numerous shorter trips around the United States. He loved to work in the yard, helping to mow and prune and would pick up every individual leaf that fell on his lawn. In about 2005, Dave decided he wanted to go to church again, so attended different churches in the area. But home teachers had been coming to the house on a regular basis for a number of years so he and Nada attended the Latter Day Saint Church, Green River Ward in Auburn. He loved going to church. Everyone would greet him and talk to him and he loved that. Although he could not talk too well, he would have his "catch phrase" right here and you always got a hug and a kiss. In 2007 he was baptized a member. It took 5 times to get him fully immersed, but he finally made it. In 2010 he was ordained an elder in the priesthood. Dave handled his illness as well as he could up until the very end, never giving up. He needed to feel helpful, so would always clean the kitchen after meals, make his bed and vacuum the house. He liked to do puzzles and his job was to turn over the pieces so they were all right side up and pick up any that fell on the floor. The last few months his health deteriorated rapidly as he lost more weight and became increasingly more confused in his daily living. Although his death is probably a blessing for him, it was not expected. He was in the hospital to be treated for pneumonia. During his dinner the first night, he choked on some food, which the hospital thinks caused another stroke and he never regained consciousness. Passing away at 5:10am, 1, 2011. He will be very much missed by his family and friends and his pets. |
