Obituary: Benedikt Marianus Holdener Benedikt Marianus Holdener was born to Benedikt and Lena Holdener on 20, 1922 in Hunenberg, Canton Zug, Switzerland, and passed away suddenly on 26, 2010 in Puyallup, Washington. He lived in the Lake Tapps area and was a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Buckley, Swiss Society of Tacoma, and the Swiss Sportsmens Club of Tacoma. Survived by wife Marie, children Steve (Rita), Larry (Brenda), Jerry (Janis), Brian (Dena), Diana (Mike), Lisa (Rick), Dan (Cindy), Eric (Shirley) and Bob (Mandy). Ben was the oldest of three children, with a surviving brother, Al, and a deceased sister, Lee, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. He is survived by 16 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. Ben had a love of family, airplanes, football, golf, singing, the outdoors, fishing, and all things Swiss especially Schwingen (Swiss wrestling) and dancing. Not only was he very involved in coaching and refereeing matches and keeping the interest in Schwingen alive in the Northwest, but also reestablished Buebe (Youth) Schwingen in 1960. Through their lives Ben and Marie traveled many times to Switzerland to visit with cousins and other relatives, attend Schwingfests and tour the land. Ben was a two-time State Wrestling Champ for Fife High School and was an all-league selection as a guard for the 1939 Fife state championship football team before graduating in 1941. He attended the of Puget Sound on a football scholarship and graduated from the Aero Industries Technical Institute in Glendale, Calif. in 1942. He was a member of the U.S. Navy during the WWII years and received his wings in 1946, then graduated from Seattle University in 1951, and joined Boeing where he enjoyed a career of 38 years of service as a design engineer. Dad was born 20, 1922 in Canton Zug, Switzerland and came to this country with his father and mother, Benedikt and Lena Holdener, and his brother Al 4 years later. Dads baby sister Lee was later born in the United States. Dad thrived in the Fife area and played football and wrestled during his high school years in Fife. He was a two-time State Wrestling Champ for Fife High School and was an all-league selection as a guard for the 1939 Fife State Championship football team before graduating in 1941 as the schools Salutorian. He attended the of Puget Sound on a football scholarship and graduated from the Aero Industries Technical Institute in Glendale, Calif. in 1942. He was a member of the U.S. Navy during the WWII years and received his wings in 1946, then graduated from Seattle University in 1951, and joined Boeing where he enjoyed a career of 38 years of service as a design engineer.I remember dad as a man who loved his family, the Catholic Church, everything about Switzerland and all things Swiss especially Schwingen (Swiss Wrestling) and dancing, airplanes, football, golf, singing, the outdoors, and fishing. The Early Years Dad milked cows with his brother Al at an early age at their farm in Fife. He got the assignment to milk the cows at Louis Lindauers place when he was 16 to help out a fellow Swiss while Louis was recovering from a construction accident. Dad saw mom at age 9 and that was the first time they met., but it wasn until several years later that they met again at church - St. Martin of Tours in Fife. Mom noticed dad in his Navy Whites with another woman on his arm (his fiancé at the time). The Navy Dad was earning his wings from the U.S. Navy as WWII was ending, but his love for the Navy was for a lifetime. He once mentioned to us that any landing you could walk away from was a good landing. He learned the shapes of both friendly and enemy planes and kept a deck of playing cards for many years that us kids looked at over and over. He was also good at knowing cloud formations and would tell us when we were looking at cumulus or thunderhead clouds. He always liked to watch the weatherman on TV as I think he had a bond with the forecasters. Airplanes It didn take long for dad to make a decision to continue his love of airplanes by completing his school in aeronautical engineering and joining the Boeing . He worked for 38 years at Boeing working on many airplane programs during his career and was at the cutting edge of the jet age. We could be sitting outside at the picnic table and dad could look up at an airplane flying along at 35,000 feet and know the make and model. I once remember asking him what the B stood for on a B-17 and B-29 and him telling me it meant Boeing. Dad and Mom Skip ahead a few years from the time mom saw dad in his Navy whites at St. Martin of Tours and dad is not only out of the Navy but hes out of a fiancé as well. So the setting is 1948 with Dad still in college, they met again at the New Years Eve party at the old Swiss Hall in Tacoma, and in 1950 mom asked dad to escort her to her work Christmas Party and they started dating steady continued... |
