Obituary: Former Mariner Dave Henderson, who died last was a big personality who will be recalled fondly for his amazing baseball career with Seattle, Oakland and Boston. More importantly, he will be remembered for his generous nature, his devotion to family and that incredible, joyful smile.

Dave Henderson was immediately the center of attention in any room he entered, especially the clubhouses he populated for 14 years in a full and prosperous major-league career that began as the first player drafted by the Mariners in 1977.

For one exalted moment, he was nearly a demigod in Boston, giving them the 1986 pennant with one epic homer and then coming oh so close to delivering an elusive World Series title to the Red Sox with another homer in the top of the 10th of Game 6. The New York Mets rallied in legendary fashion in the bottom of the inning, and the next day. If they hadn’t, Henderson frequently joked, “The Red Sox would be playing on Henderson Way, not Yawkey Way.”

For three seasons in Oakland, he was the conscience behind the Bash Brothers on a rollicking A’s ball club that brought him to three more World Series. Henderson was a winner, but in his earliest days in Seattle, he was one of the few beacons of hope on a Mariners’ team that did a lot of losing.

He found a home here in Seattle and he settled in Bellevue after his career ended. Henderson opened a batting cage, raised a family, broadcast Mariners games for a decade, and did noble work in pursuit of a cure for Angelman Syndrome, the neuro-genetic disorder that affects his son, Chase.

There was just something about Hendu, as everyone called him. You gravitated toward him, toward that gap-toothed smile (don’t worry, he joked about it himself), toward the charisma that oozed out of every pore.

Henderson signed all his autographs, “Hendu, still having fun.” A great Sports Illustrated profiled by Steve Rushin in 1991 began, “Dave Henderson’s smile runs foul pole to foul pole.”

Ask anyone who was around those great Oakland A’s teams with marquee players like Mark McGwire, Rickey Henderson and Terry Steinbach and Jose Canseco. Henderson, along with Dave Stewart and Carney Lansford, were the unquestioned leaders, the ones who drove the team to pennant after pennant.

When he retired, he carried on his life in leadership roles helping kids by founding the Rick's and Dave's Toys for Kids and being actively involved sponsoring events and fundraisers to find a cure for Angelman's syndrome, the disease his son has bravely lived with since birth. He was a man who always said yes to a good cause.

Fans would see him often at Mariners game pushing his son Chase’s wheelchair around accompanied by his wife Nancy, talking with all the fans, posing for pictures and signing autographs. He loved his Mariners!

Dave was born in 1958 in Dos Palos, California. He was one of six kids. From his early years it was clear he had a gift of sports. A Natural as they say. Even back then he played all the sports with unbridled joy and a simplicity where things slowed down for him. Ironically, he was a better football player than a baseball player but he looked at the two choices and realized he would last longer and make more money at baseball. Easy choice as he liked to say.

Hendu has friends and fans all over the country. He settled on Alki beach with his wife Nancy and his two sons Trent and Chase. He was a fixture in the community and was often seen walking Chase down the beach smiling that big smile and chatting with everyone he met.

Yes, he will be remembered for his baseball heroics, his World Series win and his long distinguished career. It's all well chronicled. However, as Dave would always say, "I'm not a ballplayer, just a man who happens to play baseball". Forever humble.

Dave is survived by his siblings, Jeannie, Al, Terry, Patricia and Michelle. His former wife Loni, his two children Chase and Trent and his wife Dani. And of course, his biggest fan and supporter, his wife Nancy.

Dave requested that all remembrances go to help cure Angelman’s disease by sending your donation to cureangelman.net.

A tribute, including his fans, will be announced soon.
