Obituary: Biographies sometimes refer to humble beginnings, but often there are few details of that early life. Evelyn May Berestoff was born into a family living in the remote small fishing village of Seldovia on the Kenai Peninsula in Alaska that, to this day, is accessible only by boat or air. She spoke little of her early years, and probably for good reason. Her grandfather was the local chief of the native people called Aleuts, and the Berestoff family in 1933 lived in a log house with a tarpaper roof. There was very little cash income for them, and their house was in poor condition and in need of repairs. For reasons never discovered by us, she was removed from her home in the mid 1930s and placed in the El Nathan Childrens in Valdez, Alaska – which she always referred to as The . There she was among dozens of children who lived in dorm-like conditions. As our mother, she always spoke of never having a feeling of family and of doing for us what she believed having a family could have been for her. The morsels she shared of her early life, painfully extracted from her over the years, point to a difficult life. She was made to go clean he white peoples houses. When the Japanese invaded the Aleutian Islands during WWII, there were frequent air raids and she recalled being responsible for gathering the children and being transported to the mountains by the local military. Other memories seemed too painful for her to talk about, even 80 years later. But she made lifelong friends at the home – her chosen sisters, the family she never had – who called her daily during the last months and days of her life to get updates on her health. Eventually she went to a boarding school – Mt. Edgcumbe high school near Sitka, Alaska, where she graduated. She spoke fondly of that time, especially of her basketball prowess. Eventually she joined the United States Air Force, the newly established branch of the military in the post WWII era. However, she had difficulty enlisting due to her being a minor ward of the territory with no parents to give her permission to enlist. Newspaper articles describe her as the first woman from the territory of Alaska to enlist in the USAF. She traveled while in the military, first to Texas for basic training, and eventually to Japan. During the Korean War she was a clerk, but in her spare time she took up motorcycles. So this pint-sized pioneer former high school basketball star was now a leather-clad motorcycle racer in her spare time in Japan! During leave in the Air Force, she spent some of her time as a volunteer, leaving her safe assignment in Japan to fly into the Korean war zone to help her nurse friends on C-47 evacuation flights. Eventually she landed in Washington state, where after her honorable discharge she took college courses in mechanical drafting and design engineering. That road led her to Boeing Aircraft , and her eventual husband, Richard Hart (Dick), where he, too, was in the engineering department. married and formed their family of Charlene, Kevin, and Carl. During their years in Mountlake Terrace, she was active in the kids lives as Cub Scouts Den Mother, youth athletic league volunteer, concessionaire manager, and neighborhood treehouse mother. her career at Boeing, Richards work led him to the Portland, Oregon area. The Harts settled in Vancouver in 1972. Not finding a soccer club for their sons in Vancouver, she and Richard were founding members of the Vancouver Youth Soccer Club. Evelyn continued in her industrial engineering career while working at Consolidated Metal (ConMet) designing radiators and other engine parts. During a labor disruption, as an exempt employee she was ordered to work the assembly line for a few weeks. She came home filthy and greasy and afraid – afraid of being screamed at and her car spit upon by the picketers, but with yet another skill learned. Eventually she landed at her last job, at Freightliner, where she transitioned from an old school, pencil and eraser designer to a CAD qualified computer specialist. Yet the woman who could design microsized screws for an 18-wheeler engine with a 12-button mouse still needed help to get her email at home. She retired in about 2000. Then they called her back. Then she retired again, for good. Then they called her back. And she retired again. Truthfully, we lost track at how many times they called her back after another retirement. Her friends in her neighborhood of 44 years remember her as the quiet friendly lady with a big heart. She got to know them better during Dicks post heart transplant period, when they generously assisted us with fundraisers and emotional support. She always spoke fondly of how they helped. In her life after Dick died (in 1998), she became known as Grandma Sydney (the name of their dog, because the great grandkids had such trouble saying Grandma Evelyn). Then the older grandkids began calling her Gma. The terms of endearment for her are many and widely known outside of the family. In her retirement, Gma continued her dinners – the time of the week when family and friends knew the invitation was open. Her 6 oclock dinners were frequently being served until 8 or later, as family and friends drifted in and out. Her independence was notorious among all. Up until last year, she would be seen by family and neighbors on the stepladder cleaning her gutters. We joked, Maybe we should just buy her an extension ladder so she would be safer. But it just seemed wrong to offer to an 82-year-old. But she would continue to refuse help. She was trying to clean exterior windows just this month. Despite the hospice nurse telling her about the dangers of dust and airborne debris for her condition, wed frequently catch her cleaning continued... |

Obituary: Born 14, 1922, passed away peacefully at Saint Annes on 24, 2016. Her father and mother, George and Alice Bevensee, had seven children: Clarence, Eleanor, Ann, Lucy, Ruth, Emma, and Fred. In 1916, just after building a beautiful home in Snohomish, George was forced to sell the house to pay for his fathers funeral. He then purchased 40 acres of timberland on the Snoqualmie River and moved the family there where they lived in two large army tents, one for cooking and another for sleeping. At the time, Emma was only 3 months old. By , 1922, when school started, George was able to clear some ground and put up a one room house built like a chicken coop with a slanting roof. Emmas earliest memories were of piling up brush as the forest they lived in was being transformed into a producing farm. Emma entered the program at the University of Washington in the fall of 1940 and spent seven summers teaching Bible, counseling and acting as Camp Nurse. She attended Bible School in Three Hills Alberta, Canada. In 1945 Emma was inducted into the US Army as a 2nd Lieutenant just before the end of the war in the European theatre. She had field training with guns and gas masks and learned to survive on her own out in the woods. Emma was in line to board the the USS Comfort, but the person next in line ahead of her was the last one allowed to get on. The Japanese sank that ship in the Pacific. In of 1955, Emma met Wesley Hart at a swimming pool party hosted by the University Presbyterian Church. were married at that church on 10, 1956, and later had four children: Christine, John, Daniel, and Bruce. Emma worked as a nurse in several nursing homes in our area, including the one she lived in, which is now called Saint Annes. She also worked as a secretary at Christ Church of Northgate from 1979 to 1991. In all, Emma had 17 grandchildren, and now has 6 great grandchildren (and 2 more on the way.) We love her dearly. She will be greatly missed. Emma is survived by her brother Fred Bevensee and her four children, Christine, John, Dan, and Bruce. There will be a memorial service in her honor held at Purdy Walters in Everett on , 6, 2016 @ 12:30pm. Please RSVP: http://evite.me/EGKSe1tRna |
