Obituary: It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Robert Dunlap Holland, Jr. of Annandale, Virginia on 20, 2016 at the age of 89. He is survived by Barbara, his loving wife of 59 years; his daughter Anne and son-in-law Rich of Springfield, Virginia; his son Chris, daughter-in-law Lisa and stepson Cody Doss of Jupiter, Florida; his sister Phyllis Eggleston of Norfolk, Virginia and many nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends. Dad, mostly known to his family and friends as Bob, was born in Norfolk, Virginia on 18, 1926 to Gladys Matthews Holland and Robert Dunlap Holland. He was raised in Norfolk and graduated from Maury High School in 1944. Upon graduation, Dad went to Emory and Henry as part of the navys V-12 program. When the V-12 program was cancelled at Emory and Henry he attended the University of Virginia participating in the Naval ROTC program. In 1949, he graduated from The University earning his degree in Commerce and a reserve commission in the US Navy. With the onset of the Korean War, he requested active duty and was sent to Korea, where he participated in the invasion of Inchon. Upon returning to the United States, Dad was sent to Camp Lejeune and trained as a gun fire liaison officer. Upon leaving active duty, Dad relocated to Annapolis, Maryland and managed a small loan office. In 1954, Dad met his future wife, Barbara on a blind date at Ladies Night at Kiwanis Club. married in 1956. In 1960, Mom and Dad relocated their family to Annandale, Virginia where he began his career with Old Dominion Bank, which later became First Virginia Bank. He retired from First Virginia Bank with 32 years of service. Dad was extremely proud of to be a part of the First Virginia Family and his Navy service. In addition to his banking career, he continued in the Naval Reserve until retirement. For much of his life, Dad was an avid boater and fisherman. He spent many hours around the water. Through the years, Dad and Mom enjoyed traveling. had many adventures exploring the United States and foreign countries together, and with family and friends. He was most proud of having had the opportunity to visit six of the seven continents. Dad was also an avid photographer -- they have hundreds of photo memories! Dad was a loving and devoted husband and father. He was extremely proud of his family and truly enjoyed spending time with family and friends over the years. He always looked forward to the stories, games, camaraderie and laughter. If he could be with us, Dad would wish that all his family and friends take good care of themselves and each other, keep thinking good thoughts, share laughs and stories, and always remember to tell family and friends how much they mean to you. May we celebrate his life by honoring those wishes. A Visitation (beginning at 1:00) and a Celebration of Life (beginning at 2:30) will be held at Demaine , 5308 Backlick Road, Springfield, VA 22151 on 30, 2016. Interment will be at Arlington National at a date as yet to be determined. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Dads name may be made to Fisher House Foundation or s for our Troops. under the direction of Demaine , Springfield, VA. |
