Obituary: Duane Barlow Herbert 24, 1929 ~ 11, 2010 “I’ve never backed down from a challenge.” dad said. And that is how he lived his life down to his last day here on earth. Our unique and amazing dad, Duane Barlow Herbert passed away 11, 2010 from complications that arose while being treated for Multiple Myeloma Cancer. Duane passed away at the University of Utah Hospital on Morning surrounded by his wife and family. He was born in Salt Lake City, Utah to Theodore Chipman and Ruth Barlow Herbert. He was raised on a farm in Sterling, Idaho where he learned his strong work ethic. “Work Will Win When Wishy-Washy Wishing Won’t” was his favorite saying. He married his sweetheart Carol Boley, from American Fork UT. He said he got a “2 for 1 special” when he married her because Gary came along with the package! Duane adopted and raised Gary along with the 6 more children they had together. A “lively group” is the best way to describe our family. Their children: Gary and Jeanette Snelson Herbert (SLC & Orem UT), Brent Herbert (preceded him in death and was waiting for him on the other side with a big grin) Connie “Steve” Ault (American Fork & Ferron UT), Linda Herbert (Orem UT), Susan “Curtis” Carlson (Orem UT), Tom and Karina “Sanchez” Herbert (Orem UT) and Holly Herbert (Orem UT). have 30 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, son Brent and great-grandson Joseph Steven McMillan. Can you even imagine what our family parties are like? Family get togethers were very important to him. Duane served a mission for the LDS church to Canada when he was 19 years old. Later, Duane and Carol served 2 missions together. first served in Boston Massachusetts and then, two years later, in Nova Scotia Canada where they supervised the building of the Nova Scotia Temple for the LDS church. loved their time as missionaries. loved to serve the people in those areas and made many priceless memories and friends. Dad often said that his life would be nothing without the church and the gospel. He never asked anyone to do anything he wasn’t willing to do himself. Duane worked at many jobs through his years, including working for Cream O Weber Dairy. Later her started his own construction business, Crown construction and started a real estate business, Herbert and Associates with his son Gary. He was one of the original founders of the builders Association where he served as president. He also was very involved in the Provo-Orem Chamber of Commerce, Kawanis Club and served as a board members on many other service organizations. He was very involved in the community and was given many awards for his service there. His service in the church was even more important to him. His ward, the Sharon 1st , Sharon stake, he considered part of his family! He spent endless hours at the stake welfare farm, church callings of every kind, shoveling snow, setting up chairs and tables and taking them down again, microphones, lights … the list goes on. You could always see dad in the background getting things set for any church service. I think he felt more comfortable in the back ground helping, but would stand up front and lead if that was what was expected of him. Dear Neighbors, Ward and Stake friends, he wants us to thank you for your friendship, love and prayers. He will miss you, but just picture him doing what he loves now on the other side … helping people! The family would like to give special thanks to Dr. Tricot, the medical staff and other doctors who cared for Dad at the Huntsman Cancer Institute and the Utah University of Utah Hospital as well as his personal doctor, Dr. Sean Curzon. You showed him compassion along with your care, put up with his “guff” when things were hard, and made the last moments with our Dad very special and memorable. We will never forget how sacred our last morning together was as a family with Dad as we gathered by his bedside. As Dad always said ... Family and Friends, thats what a great life is really about, our relationships. services will be held at 11 a.m. , 16, 2010, at the Sharon Stake , 545 South 800 East, Orem. Family and friends may call evening from 6-8 p.m. at the Walker Sanderson , 646 East 800 North, Orem and morning from 9-10:45 a.m. prior to the services at the stake center. Interment will be held at the Orem City . |

Obituary: Carol Boley Herbert Carol, 82, was born on 26, 1929 to Glen Mackey and Mabel Elizabeth Breinholt Boley, in American Fork Utah. Siblings: LaBelle (Wes) Barry, Mackey (Joyce) Boley and Kent (Ann) Boley. The Morning Breaks the Shadows Flee â¦. Her children were honored to have spent the last days of her life with her, at her home, as she passed into the waiting arms of her husband Duane, and son Brent, 1, 2011. Her ags were packed and she was ready and eager to go. Through our tears comes incredible joy, as we envision the reunion with her loved ones. Mom would often smile and say, Ive had a good life. And that she did! She married Duane B. Herbert and had seven lively children. Gary R. (Jeanette) Herbert, Brent D. Herbert, Connie (Steven) Ault, Linda Herbert, Susan (Curtis) Carlson, Tom B (Karina) Herbert, and Holly Herbert. It is amazing that such a quiet, reserved woman could have such dynamic, strong and influential children. We believe that she will get extra credit in heaven for putting up with us. She is preceded in death by; her Parents, Husband, son Brent D. Herbert, brother Mackey Boley, and Great-Grandson Joseph McMillan. She is survived by; her remaining 6 children; sister, LaBelle Barry; brother, Kent Boley; 30 grandchildren and 37 great grand-children. She also had the blessing of being a foster mom to Emerson Jimmy for 9 years (counting the time he served a full-time mission to Michigan. What a great son he was. We know that there were many times that she would have permanently traded her other children for Emerson. He was a happy person who always obeyed her wishes on the first request. He was a blessing to our family. Carol grew up in American Fork, Utah. graduating high school, she worked at Geneva Steel. She married Paul Peters, they later divorced. Carol met and married Duane B. Herbert in the Salt Lake City Temple 12, 1952. Faith, Music, Patience, Laughter and Hard Work are some of the many qualities Carol taught her children by example. Carol had a great love for music. She played the piano, organ and clarinet. She attended American Fork High School where she was a member of the Band and was the accompanist for the Mens Choir. She really enjoyed being in a class with all of the boys. She had the ability to sight read music, play by ear and she was one of those lucky people who had perfect pitch. Mom was never obtrusive - however sometimes in ward choir, she would quietly hum the correct pitch to others to help them out. She was so dedicated to ward choir growing up we thought that there was always an extra hour of church! When her 3 oldest daughters were young she would teach them to sing songs in three part harmony. would perform at small neighborhood functions. She should get two extra credit points for this, 1st for sharing the love and performance of music to her daughters. And 2nd for being a miracle worker to get 3 young girls together long enough to get along and sing! Most nights were filled with visiting, laughter, singing and popcorn. Carol was a hard worker. Together with Dad they were a hard team to beat. were always working on something. Late one evening, Mom had just finished putting up some fruit and had cleaned up the kitchen and had just sat down - probably after a 15 hour day. I asked her what we were doing next and she said nothing. Wow, I thought that was really something â to see her do nothing. That rarely was the case. She could make something out of nothing. We had a covered porch and we would run there every time there was a thunder storm. Why? We would sit on an old sofa, watching the lightening show and sing together. It was great! On our weekly drive to visit her mom in American Fork we would sing in the car. I guess they figured out that it was better than hearing us complain or argue! We have many great years playing basketball on the small court in our backyard. And to top it off, we had irrigation to play in every week. (Our backyard was the place to be in the summer). Dinner was always at 5 pm. Her cooking was the BEST! To mention a few of our favorite items, we had Roast Beef dinners, homemade rolls, popcorn balls, homemade ice-dream (churned by hand) with brownies, Dads favorite fruit cake, scones and even homemade taffy! She helped us carve pumpkins, sewed us clothes, gave the girls permanent waves, and even helped us paint walls in our homes when we were older. grew a large garden in our backyard. This provided us with lots of work opportunities. We picked and sold raspberries under the direction and assistance of our mom. Mom always worked alongside us and was still working long after we bailed out. We sold eggs to our neighbors. Those nickels, dimes and quarters really added up. With the money we earned, we would take a 2 day vacation to Salt Lake City and stay in Motel Utah. The kids loved the swimming pool and the elevator that went from the first floor to the second. We were really living! Really! Carol learned to always see the big picture in every situation. She never had anything negative to say about anyone. She only gave advice when asked. She kept out of other peoples business which helped us develop a sense to figure things out for ourselves. She was often right, but allowed others to have their opinions and get there on their own. Although, when she was asked for an opinion, she could answer with her gospel centered insight. Laughter is the medicine of choice in our family. As children, we were a handful. continued... |
