Obituary: Henrietta A. Holman (Herky), 88, of Highland, California, died 31, 2010 at her home. She is remembered as a wonderful Mother, Grandmother (Granny), Great-Grandmother, wife, and friend. She formerly resided in Rialto, California in the El Rancho Verde neighborhood. She was born 6, 1921, in Youngstown, Ohio. She was the only child of the late Pearl and Dr. Henry Gozdzicki, M.D. Her parents relocated to Ambridge, Pennsylvania shortly after her birth. It was there which she spent her childhood and adolescence. She graduated from Ambridge High School in 1939. She always spoke fondly of her hometown and was an avid supporter of both the Pittsburgh Pirates and Steelers sports teams. She loved everything about the old steel mill town and region from which she came. She attended one year of nursing school before deciding to leave for California in order to marry her hometown fiancé. He had been inducted into the Army Air Corp. On 17, 1941, Herky and James (Demetrios) G. Handgis (also deceased) married in Santa Ana, California. Later in life she married, for a second time, to Norman (Norm) G. Holman, whom she also survived. Each marriage lasted more than 30 years. Aside from nursing school, Herky spent a brief period working in the office of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvanias Attorney General, prior to beginning her life in California. The majority of her occupational career was spent working as an executive secretary at Teamsters Local 467 in San Bernardino, California. It later became Local 63, and was relocated to nearby Rialto, California. She was a staunch union member always standing by her second husband, Norman, who was one of the Locals long-time members and executive officers. marrying Norm, she left the Local and became an office administrator at Yellow Freight Co. Outside of work, Herky enjoyed crocheting, sewing, reading, and most of all, spending time with family. She also loved traveling and fine dining. Family was everything to Henrietta and there wasn anything she wouldn do to help family members feel loved and supported. Herky, is survived by her three sons, Gregory (Greg) and his wife Robin of Highland, CA, Thomas (Tom) of Yucaipa, CA, Dennis and his wife Ivy of Calimesa, CA. Grandchildren include, Alicia and her husband Jim of Devore, CA, Jamie and her husband Dana of San Diego, CA, Ashley and her fiancé Tony of Glenwood Springs, CO, Gregory and Susi of Irvine, CA, Nick and his wife Jessica of Angels Camp, CA, Tom of Yucaipa, CA, Tim of Orange , CA, Michelle of Calimesa, CA and Joe also from Calimesa, CA. There are two great-grandchildren, Skyler and Kaylee of Calimesa, CA. Additional survivors include Vicki (Alicia and Ashleys Mother) and Mike, as well as, Norms children from a previous marriage, Julie, Lorie, Renie, Kirk and Ryan plus Norms grandchildren Becky, Matthew, Elizabeth, Heather, Wendy and great-grandchildren Rowan, Chyna and Blake. services will be held at Montecito Memorial Park & Mortuary, 3520 East Washington St., Colton, CA 92324, (909) 825-3024, on , 12, 2010. Visitation is in the chapel from 1:00 to 2:00 pm, followed immediately by chapel services, which will conclude at the gravesite. A memorial reception will follow and begin at approximately 3:30 until 6:30 pm. It will be held at East Highlands Ranch - Spring Lake Clubhouse, 6892 Cloverhill Dr. Highland, CA 92346. Please obtain driving directions via Google maps, Yahoo or Mapquest for both services and the reception. |
