Obituary: Stuart died on May 19, 2013. Stuart was a resident of Vallejo, California. He had previously lived in Sacramento, Dallas, TX, Loveland, CO, Williamsburg, VA, Gainesville, FL, and Northern Michigan. He grew up in the Chicago area, graduating from Wauconda High School. He is survived by his mother, Cleora Hoekje, his brothers, Jim and David Hoekje, his cousin, Sharon Moore, his beloved ex-wife, Lynn, and his friends, Merry Bern, Robert Woolery, Dorrin Rosenfeld, Alex Vasquez, Idelle Clark, Lyndy Pickens, Debbie Tinsley, John Harrington, Marty and Zoe Wharton, Rodd Stockwell and Matt Dixon. I found his body on 5/22, but I believe he died in the late afternoon or evening of , May 19th. He was a brilliant man. He was well-educated, earning a PhD in Chemical Engineering at the University of Florida. He worked at IBM, NASA and the Naval Research Lab in Langley, Virginia. He became an entrepreneur, and achieved fleeting success with an Internet golf reservation service, which was called TeeTimes. He did independent research on using sound to modify brain waves, partly to treat his own mental distress. For 6 years, he taught chemistry, mostly to junior college students in the Sacramento and East San Francisco Bay area. Most recently, he was pursuing research interests on liposomal delivery systems for vitamin C and maitake mushroom extract. Stuart was an emotionally-frail creature with a kind and golden heart. He wanted, at his core, to be a good person, to love and be loved. He was unfailingly kind to animals, and to elderly and disabled people. It was amazing to meet him in 2006, and note that, despite the fact that he was clearly psychologically challenged, he had never turned to public assistance. No professional had ever told him that he might have Aspergers Syndrome; usually, psychologists and psychiatrists mentioned borderline personality, bipolar disorder or even schizoaffective disorder as possible diagnoses. His swaggering bravado and haughty superiority, even cruelty, which was the veneer he wore during much of his early life, hurt people, including those who could have loved and cared for him. In recent months, Stuart had been able to express his vulnerability much more clearly. Increasingly, he also expressed tenderness, gratitude and love for people who were kind to him. Stuart was diagnosed with rectal cancer in 2010. It was Stage III(b), meaning that it had spread locally to a few lymph nodes. He underwent chemotherapy, radiation and surgery. The radiation damaged his pelvic tissues. His immune system, probably already not at optimal function, was assaulted by the chemo. In 2012, he was told that he had a recurrent tumor in his left presacral area and that there were 3 suspicious densities in his lungs. Conventional treatment held little promise for him. His life expectancy was then pegged at about a year by his oncologist, but I believe that, even if the cancer had progressed, Stuart would have lived considerably longer than that. He kept threatening to be around for 20 more years. He intermittently voiced suicidal impulses, but eventually embraced life. The embracing was on his own, in response to his friends, including Bob Woolery, D.C., Rodd Stockwell, MD and me, Merry Bern, RN, ND expressing only that we would be sad if he chose suicide. Stuart then pursued a program including a ketogenic diet, pancreatic and systemic enzyme supplementation, coffee enemas, the rebuilding of his immune system with AHCC and Carnivora, and alternative chemotherapy with artemisinin and iron. He was also taking maitake mushroom extract and high doses of Vitamin C, experimenting with maximizing his serum levels using liposomal delivery systems. He was feeling well and optimistic about his future, although he was stressed over the impending foreclosure of his home and a delay in receiving Medi-Cal coverage for health insurance. He also despaired when important people in his life were not accessible, or when we failed to embrace him as he needed to be held, gently and carefully, like an eggshell that had been blown-out in preparation for painting. I was worried about his use of narcotics. I wish I had clearly told Stuart how terrified I was that he would accidentally take too much oxycodone and stop breathing. The coroner determined that his death was due to an accidental overdose of oxycodone and Valium, which caused his respiratory arrest. To my eye, during his final months, Stuart had very little physical pain. But he took drugs to dull the PSYCHIC pain he felt when rejected or rebuked. He received a rebuke from his beloved Kaiser physician on May 17th, and that rebuke email was on Stuarts computer screen on the evening I found his body. I don think his physician understood how important he had become to Stuart, and that physician also failed to heed my repeated warnings about Stuarts oversedation and resultant decline in his ability to function. Stuart was a man of principle. He obeyed rules. He would have acceded to any rule dictated by his physician. But his physician prescribed huge doses of powerful drugs. In (psychic) pain, Stuart took the maximum dose, and maybe more, because the maximum dose can make a person forget that he already took the maximum dose. Stuart was, in the words of some people who knew him, other than me, a worthy man, a kind man, easy to be a friend to, and a man who loved the Lord. Those are core truths about Stuart, which were, in life, often obscured by his challenging behaviors. Loving Stuart was a daunting task, an education, and it was sometimes exhausting. But I would give ANYTHING to have him back for an hour, a day, a week, or for 20 years, to love and care for.
