Obituary: Donald Francis Hitchcock "Poppa Donnie" Father, Grandfather, Great Grandfather and friend passed away 18, 2014 at the age of 81. Don was born right here in Bakersfield, CA on 27, 1932. He was the second eldest child of Addison Otis "Buck" and Olive Hitchcock. Don and his lovely wife of nearly 60 years Fran were married in Las Vegas in a dual ceremony with dear friends Chuck and Bobbie Holloway, on 30th 1955. Don loved his wife and her loss last month took the wind from his sails. Don grew up here in Bakersfield and graduated for Kern Union High School (BHS). He also spent most of his adult life here, other than relocating for some years to Sacramento and Santa Clara, CA and then Reno Nevada. Don was taught the Wood, Wire & Metal Lathing trade as young teenager from Charles Holloway Senior and became a member of the Lathers local apprenticeship program, graduating to Journeyman status. He was a credited member of the Lathers Union, later merging with the Carpenters Union where he remained an active member until his retirement. Don was called to service in the US Army under the draft during the Korean conflict period and was stationed in Germany for his tour. He competed on the Army rifle team earning numerous awards for his outstanding marksmanship and was honorably discharged May 31, 1962. Don worked in the Lathing, custom Cabinetry and Formica trades for over 40 years. He became a sub contractor in the Lath & Plaster business, operating Hitchcock Lath & Plastering and earned his General Contractors License in 1985. He operated the business with his wife Fran building custom residential homes until retiring in 2005. Don was a very hard working and successful business man that took pride in his work. Don was known to be an honest, straight forward guy, and there was nothing behind the scenes, I tell it like I see it guy! Don loved the outdoors in particular the mountains. He had a passion for deer and bird hunting, as well as fishing. He spent a great deal of his youth and young married life with family and friends in a family owned cabin in the Glenville area, where many wonderful memories were created that were never forgotten. His favorite places however, were the Reno and Lake Tahoe areas where he resided with his family, conducted business, hunted, fished and even learned to snow ski as an adult. "He believed "you're never too old"! Don loved and participated in sports, in particular football and baseball. He participated in sports as a youth and coached little league later in life. Evenings were for Walter Cronkite and s were for watching football, so he stayed glued to the tube! He also enjoyed drag racing in his young adult life and participating in Speedway bike racing as a crew member as a senior. He loved to watch his grandson's play football, baseball and soccer and gave them a few shooting lessons as well. Being his only Granddaughter however, Jordan Hicks held a special place in his heart and he was very proud of her accomplishments, especially academics. Don was preceded in death by his, parents Buck and Olive Hitchcock and his brothers Ronald, Butch and Noel. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Fran. He is survived by his eldest son Mark Hitchcock and wife Teresa, daughter Lori Hicks and husband Steve, son Kristopher, brother's Harry, Kenneth and Rick Hitchcock, sisters Theda Rikard, Dorothy Manes, Helyene Rudell and Donna Galland. Grandson's Brandon, Ryan, wife Amanda, Aaron Hitchcock and Granddaughter Jordan Hicks. Great Grandson's Blaize, Logan and Hayden Hitchcock. Also missing Don will be Aunts, Uncles a host of nephews and nieces, friends and business colleagues. Don touched many lives and although a bit rough on the edges, when the rubber hit the road, he was there to help if you needed him. He always will remain in our memories and deeply missed. Viewing will be held at Hillcrest Mortuary from 4:00PM-8:00PM on , 28. Military graveside service will be held at The Bakersfield National on 29, 10:00AM. 30338 East Bear Mountain Blvd. 58 East, Bear Mnt exit, Bear Mnt Rd. Following the service, a gathering will be held at Hodel's Country Dining, 5917 Knudsen Dr, Bakersfield, CA 93308.
