Obituary: HUMMER Robert L. Hummer was born in Manheim, Pennsylvania, 10, 1912. He was a graduate of the School of Veterinary Medicine, University of Pennsylvania and earned a master of Public degree from Harvard University. He practiced his profession in Knoxville, Tennessee from 1934 to 1941. His military career began at Napier Field, Alabama on 15, 1941. Colonel Hummer served two tours of post WWII duty overseas, three years in Japan as Fifth Air Force Veterinarian and four years in Wiesbaden, Germany as Veterinarian for the Air Force Exchange System in Europe. He organized and directed the first USAF Veterinary School for airmen and officers at the School of Aviation Medicine, Gunter AFB, Alabama. In 1960 his assignment brought him to San Antonio as Director of Veterinary Service, USAF School of Aerospace Medicine. He organized and directed the first Masters Degree program in Laboratory Animal Medicine for Air Force Veterinarians during this assignment. Colonel Hummer retired 31 , 1965 and assumed the directorship of the Department of Animal Resources, Southwest Foundation for Research and Education, San Antonio. There he developed the original Foundation Chimpanzee Breeding Colony. Bob, as he preferred to be called, was a member of the Coker United Methodist Church and the John Wesley School Class. Other organizations of which he was a member are: The American Veterinary Medical Association in which he served fourteen years on the Advisory Board on Veterinary Specialties, the Veterinary Medical Association of Bexar , serving as president for one year, the of Veterinary Preventive Medicine where he served for six years on the Examining Committee. Bob was also the past President of the B.R.A.G. Brooke Retiree Activities Group. He is survived by his wife Alma S. Hummer; sons, Robert J. Hummer and his wife Barbara, of Manasses, VA, and Thomas J. Hummer and his wife Carol, of La Jolla, CA; grandchildren, Robert J. Hummer, Thomas W. Hummer, Michelle Dickinson, Reina Marshall, and Samantha and Tom; and great grandchildren, Jacob, Cidney, Emma, Abbygail, and Jackson. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. at Porter Loring North. SERVICE MONDAY, 9:00 A.M. COKER UNITED METHODIST CHURCH the Rev. Bob Allen and Rev. John Gibbs officiating. Obituary: Alma S. Hummer was born in Shamokin, Pennsylvania, 22, 1911 to Rebecca and Charles Stechenfinger. She passed away 9, 2004, in San Diego, CA at the age of 92. She was a graduate of the School of of the Protestant Episcopal Hospital in Philadelphia, PA in the class of 1933. Mrs. Hummer was a member of Coker United Methodist Church and the John Wesley School Class. An African violet enthusiast for many years, Alma was a member and past president of the Magic Knight African Violet Society. She was also affiliated with several state and national African Violet associated organizations and served as a Senior Judge. Preceded in death by her husband, Col. Robert L. Hummer, USAF Ret.; she is survived by sons, Robert J. Hummer and his wife Barbara of Manassas, VA, Thomas J. Hummer and his wife Carol of La Jolla, CA; grandchildren, Robert J. Hummer, Thomas W. Obituary: Ray Daniel Hummel passed away 14, 2007, in San Antonio, Texas. He was born 14, 1925, in Spring Creek, Virginia, to Jasper and Minnie Hummel. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He graduated from the Commercial Trades Institute in Chicago, Illinois and worked at J.S. Denton & Son as manager of the Venetian blind department until he retired. Ray was a lifelong member of the Church of the Nazarene in Harrisonburg, VA until he and his wife moved to San Antonio, TX, in 2004, to be with their son and his family. He will always be remembered for the love and generosity he had for his family. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Olin, Carl, Earl and Loy Hummel; sisters, Viola Liskey and Goldy Brogan. Ray is survived by his loving wife, Jean Hummel; son, Gregory Ray Hummel and wife, Pam; granddaughter, Danielle Elisabeth; sister, Meda Hampt; nieces, Brenda Comer, Barbara Plum, Betty Hogan and Wendy Smith; nephew, Irvan Hummel; and sister-in-law, Margaret Plum. The family held a private service in San Antonio, and a memorial ceremony in Virginia will be planned at a later date. Memorial contributions can be made in RayÂs name to the local SPCA animal shelter. |
