Obituary: Helping others was instinctive to Bertha who was born into a Christian family in rural Haynesville, Louisiana, on 12, 1917; she was the only child of Ola Sims. Eighteen months after she was born, Ola passed away from the 1918 Spanish Flu Pandemic that spanned the globe, claiming tens of millions of lives. Bertha was reared by her grandmother, Agnes Sims, who had recently lost her husband Benjamin. Along with Agnes’ nine remaining children, the family soon relocated to the city, and then to Kilgore, Texas. When Bertha finished her formal education, she worked in restaurants, and as a domestic. Dissatisfied with that condition, she took employment in the local hospital where she cleaned the nurses’ quarters and prepared diet trays for patients. With the onset of WWII and the departure of nurses to serve, Bertha trained to become a nurse’s aide and moved to Dallas for better wages. In 1941, she joined the staff at Parkland Hospital. During the height of WWII (1942), she left the hospital to build airplane parts for the war effort. When the war ended, she returned to Parkland and became a certified Licensed Vocational Nurse. Bertha’s oldest child, Velorian, was born after her first marriage ended. The mother was alone and without childcare, thus preventing her from returning to work. Her pastor suggested that she join the government’s Welfare program, but Bertha refused. Instead, she conceived the idea to open a nursery. This brilliant move would solve her childcare issue, as well as help other mothers who faced the same dilemma. Bertha went to City Hall to acquire an official license. When she was directed to a window downstairs, she realized that she had been stereotyped. The interview was for a Beer License. Upon informing the clerk that she wanted a license to keep children, she was told that there were no licensed facilities in Dallas for “Colored” children. In , 1948, Bertha received a permit for the first licensed African American nursery in Dallas, Mason’s Lullaby Nursery. Bertha took the funds she had banked while building airplane parts to start this business. She renovated her home, a neighbor’s son printed a sign on a cardboard box, and two hours later, the first child enrolled. The next day, Bertha had four babies in her newly established, twenty-four hour, seven-days-a-week, Mason’s Lullaby Nursery at 2714 Cochran Street. As her enrollment grew, she hired three helpers and cared for as many as forty infants. Because Dallas city directories did not include the businesses of most African Americans prior to the 1950s, it was not until 1951 that the directory listed Mason’s Lullaby Nursery with Bertha (Mason) as proprietor. In 1948, when she married James Baker, her second child, Vetia, was born. South Dallas was entrenched with racial turbulence during the 1940s and 1950s. Black-owned homes and businesses were bombed and burned to maintain segregation. In 1951, when the man who led the bombings was identified and his address was printed in the newspaper, Bertha and James were curious to see the house where he lived, so they drove to his South Dallas community. Next door to his home was the Good Samaritan Hospital building that was for sale. In a bold move, the Bakers bought the building in 1951, and applied for a license to own and operate the Baker Residential Hotel for African Americans who moved to Dallas to obtain better employment. Bertha operated this business into the early years of the twenty-first century, using it to give some people a place to stay, even when they had no money. She used the building to feed some people when they had no food. In 2012, the building received City Landmark status. In 1957, Bertha trained to become a Physical Therapist Assistant. She was hired by the Dallas ISD and worked at H.S. Thompson Elementary School until 1971. From there, she went to Dallas Easter Seal Society (formerly Dallas Society for Crippled Children), and work with small children who had physical challenges. For thirteen years, she taught these children how to walk so that they could transfer into mainstream education. Bertha married her childhood friend, Ernest Hilburn, in 1977. In 1984 when he became ill, she retired to care for him until he passed away in 1987. She then began volunteering at food and clothes pantries, missions, shelters, and outreach programs for the homeless throughout Dallas. She cooked and cared for the sick until she was no longer able to do so. In 2005, she went on a mission trip to dig wells in Zimbabwe, South Africa, with the St. Luke “Community” United Methodist Church family. She worked with the church’s Habitat for Humanity program. She participated in the Prayer Ministry and several Bible study groups; she was a part of a special community prayer group where a band of warriors from different denominations met each morning to intercede for the causes of humanity; she completed a ten-hour continued education course in “Applied Bible Study Methods” at Dallas Theological Seminary; and she was a generous contributor to various student scholarship programs for college education. Until her transition on 2, 2015, Bertha Baker Hilburn remained one of God’s beacons for social and spiritual reformation. Her South Dallas Good Samaritan structure will be renovated to continue outreach programs in her honor. Two of Bertha’s children – James’ older son Cornelius Baker who she helped to rear, and her oldest daughter Velorian, along with a grandson, Quincy Porter – preceded her in death. Bertha leaves to celebrate her life and embrace her legacy a sister, Mildred Murray, three daughters and one son: Vetia Smith (Terry), James Lynn II, VonCiel Carroll and Vanessa Denese Baker; her grandchildren: Veronique, Valisha and Kytori Keeton; Rodney, LaMonica and Cornelia Lynn Baker; Francis Baker; Vontrae Donnell; Vekeisha, Jermaine and Jason Baker; Jametta Ervin; Jahmaad Baker; and McKinley Williams Knox III, as well as twenty-two great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, nieces, nephews and extended family. |
