Obituary: Helen Louise Higginbotham, passed away peacefully on 4th, 2015, with her husband and daughters by her side with her hands in theirs. Surviving Helen are husband Skip of Fort Davis, TX, daughter Pamela Fox and her husband Jeremy of Georgetown, TX, Patricia Grado and her husband Andy of Fort Davis, TX, and seven grandchildren: Ashley, Katie, Zachary, and Bella Fox of Georgetown, TX, and Kayla, Ellie, and Hunter Grado of Fort Davis, TX. Helen was predeceased by her mother and stepfather, Eleanor and William Shank, her sister, Erie Havens, and her brother, Clarence Betz. Helens remains will be placed in rest at Central Texas State Veterans Cemetary in Kileen, TX, after a private ceremony for immediate family. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Fisher for Alzheimers Research Foundation, 110 East 42nd Street, 16th Floor, New York, NY 10017, or online at www.alzinfo.org. Helen was born near Pittsburgh, PA in 1941, and for most of her childhood years was raised by only her mother. Helen was very proud and praiseful of her Mom for working hard and sacrificing so much to provide for her children when she had so little. She became a registered nurse in the early 60s after graduating from Shadyside School of in Pittsburgh. In 1971, she met Skip in Monterey, CA, where he was then studying at the Naval Postgraduate School. wed in 1972 in Malibu, CA. During their 43 years together they lived in Carmel, CA, El Paso, TX, Ruidoso, NM, Homosassa, FL, Loveland, CO, and Fort Davis, TX. In her later years, Helen was stricken with Alzheimers disease. She lived her final year in Tiffin House, a residential memory care facility in Georgetown, TX, where Skip saw her daily. Helen was small of stature but big of heart. She cared passionately about others, a trait that suited her well for her 40-year nursing career, mostly in critical care where she became known as Higgie. Her compassion coupled with exemplary skills made her the assistant sought after by doctors in every hospital where she worked. While she found great satisfaction in helping to heal hundreds, she relished the chance to nurse the elderly and comfort those nearing the end of life. Never fail, when no one else was there, Higgie was at their bedside with their hand in hers until the end. She was a warm, bubbly, open and affectionate person who loved life and was loved by all. Higgie was quick to engage complete strangers, striking up a conversation with, Don I know you? Many lasting friendships began just that way. When others she has met remember Higgie, to the last person they inevitably say, She was a sweet lady. I loved her smile and loved to hear her laugh. Even after her Alzheimers had progressed, she was the center of attention within her Tiffin House family. She loved the girls on staff and they thought of her as their grandma. The girls will miss her loving fanny pat they knew was coming as a show of her affection whenever they passed her by. She found that her busy life caring for patients, family, and the many pets she lavished her affection upon, seldom allowed her the time to stop and smell the roses – the Queen Elizabeth was her favorite. In what leisure time she did find, she thoroughly enjoyed playing golf with Skip, her son-in-law, Jer, and their men friends. She refused to play golf with womens groups, finding the gals too serious to enjoy. Higgies game was pretty good despite her having difficulty remembering how many strokes she had played. Helen also relished time in the sun and whenever she had down time, soaked it up by the pool with her sweet tea and a thriller novel. Love of sun also explained why Florida beaches were her most-loved vacation destination. Sun, sea, sand games, and shelling, augmented by the downing of foot-long hot dogs and margaritas made for unforgettable experiences. Higgie was also naturally positive about life. Never say never became her mantra over the years. She was feisty and strong-willed, but never high-handed or self-centered. Instead she quietly shaped attitudes and viewpoints; softly persuading others to go in directions and seek goals that to her seemed most worthy. Her intuitions made our lives better. As wife, mother, grandmother, and dear friend, Helen loved all deeply and unconditionally. For their health and happiness she prayed constantly and labored tirelessly. Her warmth, her touch, and the sound of her voice, especially when she would softly sing or hum her favorite hymns as she went about her business, will be sorely missed. But we find comfort in knowing that she waits joyfully in a place where once again and forever we shall be with her. By Gods grace, she won her battle with Alzheimers in the only way possible as the Lord freed her of its grasp while she was still aware of her loved ones. By answering her prayer He blessed us all. She truly lived the core teaching of Jesus Christ – to love your God with all your heart and love others as yourself. Mother would want us to proclaim here, "That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved."

We are comforted by the words of this song, "Just think of stepping on shore, and finding it Heaven; of touching a hand and finding it God's; of breathing new air and finding it celestial; of waking up in Glory, and finding it ."

We wish to thank Linda Overton for the love and care she gave Mother these last months. We were all blessed by her sweet spirit. Mother had a great love for her church family at East River.

See you soon, Mom.
