Obituary: JOHN F. HERZER
JULY 24, 1931 - AUGUST 30, 2010

John Fred Herzer, 79, of Austin, beloved husband and father, died , 30, 2010 at Seton Hospital, Austin, Texas.
He was born in Thrall, Texas on 24, 1931 where he started his careers in farming, ranching and business. Although he had travelled the world, did business in many countries, and lived in Taylor, Lubbock and Austin, he always considered Thrall home.
A man of the land and his cattle, he started working at age 16 during ginning season at Thrall Cooperative Gin. He was promoted to General Manager of the Gin. On 6, 1955, he married Anna Beth Stanford. In 1963, Herzer was elected as the General Manager of the Cen-Tex Cotton Oil Mill in Thorndale, which marked the beginning of his years of leadership in the Cooperative Association. With Cooperatives Managers and Directors training as well Business Management classes, Farm Credit System classes, and public relations studies at Texas A&M University and Texas Tech University. He became a successful leader and was ultimately elected to the position of General Manager and CEO of the Plains Cooperative Oil Mill in Lubbock, the worlds largest cotton seed oil mill where he introduced a sunflower program as an alternate crop for oil production and was nicknamed The Sunflower King.
During his business career, he was instrumental in establishing Producers Exchange Insurance and in creating a producer-owned trucking association. While at the helm, Plains Co-op built the worlds first Castor Bean processing plant at Plainview, TX. He later initiated West Texas sunflower business with NIDERA, a Dutch conglomerate in Rotterdam. He served on dozens of Boards including the Texas Planting Seed Association, Bryan, TX (President); The Texas Federation of Cooperatives (President); Executive Committee of Soy-Cot Sales, Inc., Des Plaines, Illinois (Director and Member); Insurance Committee of the Texas Federation of Cooperatives (President, Director, Chair); Texas Cottonseed Crushers Association (President); Natural Food & Fiber Committee of Texas (Chair); Research & Education Committee of the National Cottonseed Products Association, Memphis ,TN, (Chair); and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Producers Exchange Insurance in Dallas, TX. He served as a member of the Advisory Committee of the Houston Bank for Cooperatives and as a Stockholder and Member of the Board of Directors of Lubbock National Bank. He served as Chairman of the committee to establish the chair for Roy B. Davis Cooperative Chair at Texas A&M University.
He garnered a number of awards included Certificate of Honorary membership in the Young makers of Texas, Honorary State Farmer, Outstanding Recognition Award Area VII Young Farmers, and Cooperator of the Year by the Texas Federation of Cooperatives in 1975.
He served as a member of the Foundation Board at Texas Tech University; member of the Presidents Advisory Council at Texas Tech University and member of the Board of Directors of the Red Raiders Club, the Industrial Board of Lubbock Opportunities Industrial and was a member of Lubbock Power and Light Board of Directors.
He served in every lay capacity of the Lutheran church during his lifetime and served as councilman of Shepherd King Lutheran Church in Lubbock. He was president of the congregation of St. John Lutheran Church in Thrall when the current church was built - the church where his burial services will be held.
In his retirement, he took great delight in participating in the business and personal activities of his children and wife, particularly his wifes interest in genealogy. He took great pride in his personal accomplishment of designing the flag for the Stephen F. Austins Old 300 organization, which was approved and marketed by the organization in , 2010.

Obituary: A long and fruitful life has ended. Edna has now gone to be with Allen, her husband of 64 years, and all the other relatives and friends who predeceased her. Edna left us just hours before her 72nd wedding anniversary. Edna was born in Clanton, Alabama, the youngest of ten. Her mother died when she was two, and her father when she was six. She was reared by her older siblings, and lived with them in several different states. She graduated from Central High in Kansas City, MO where she met her future husband. attending Kansas City Junior , she transferred to the University of Colorado, in Boulder, which she loved. She graduated in 1935, the first woman in her family to get a college degree. Edna taught school in Leadville, Colorado, where she and the other single lady teachers lived in a hotel. No men were allowed on their floor. Edna loved Colorado, especially skiing and ice skating. She climbed Mount Elbert, the highest peak in the state, during this time.
Edna and Allen married immediately upon his graduation from West Point. had a three month honeymoon, which they spent going from one of Ednas siblings to the next on the fried chicken circuit, as they called it. Allen apparently ate enough fried chicken then to last the rest of his life. also stayed with Allens parents in Colorado, where they often went mountain climbing. Edna thrived as an Air Force wife. Anne and Allen, Jr. were born before Allen Sr. went to England to lead a bomber group during WWII. Jim and Debby were part of the baby boom. One of Ednas memorable trips was escorting her four children ages 1 to 10 and one-eyed dog Fritz from Denver to France, via train and ocean liner. Favorite posts included Wiesbaden, Germany; Essex Junction, Vermont; Maxwell AFB, Alabama; and Paris, France. Edna and Allen loved to travel, camp, and host family and friends at their lake house in Alabama. Edna and Allen retired to Nassau Bay, Texas. As Allen wrote, one hurricane too many we moved to higher ground in Austin, Texas, where, incidentally, our daughter Deb and her family live. Edna was a great joke teller, a devoted wife and mother, an exemplary mother-in-law and grandmother, a sharp bridge player, a wonderful cook, a tireless homemaker, a Girl Scout leader extraordinaire, an inveterate reader, and an enthusiastic volunteer in every community in which she lived. Debby is thankful that Edna chaperoned her and her friends to see the Beatles in Dallas in 1964, even though it required missing a day of school. Ednas spirit continued to shine through her 90s, even when limited vision and memory issues were a problem. She attended church faithfully every until her final illness. She always walked to the front of the church to take communion and was an inspiration to all. Edna is survived by her children Anne Herzberg Adler, and husband Stephen of Moline, Illinois; Allen Herzberg, Lt. Col. (Ret.) of Colorado Springs, Colorado; Jim Herzberg of Katy; and Debby Loomis of Austin. She is survived by grandchildren Allen Herzberg, III and Jen of McLean, Virginia; Rebecca Adler of Austin; Eric Adler of Brooklyn, New York; Abby Loomis of San Francisco, California; Sam Loomis of Boston, Massachusetts; and Eliza Loomis of Austin. She is survived by great-grandchildren Grant and Lauren Herzberg of McLean. She is also survived by former son-in-law Tom Loomis of Austin, and many nephews and nieces. Edna was preceded in death by her husband Allen, all her siblings, and her granddaughter Molly Anne Loomis. Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family at half past ten oclock in the morning, , the 18th of at Northwest Hills United Methodist Church; 7050 Village Drive Austin TX 78731. Services will follow the visitation at eleven oclock in the morning.
