Obituary: Col. Conrad Joseph Herlick United States Air Force Retired died 5, 2008. Born in Helendale, California on 10, 1910 to Scandinavian immigrants, Peter and Anna Herlick, Joe grew up on the familys cattle ranch in southern California. He and his older sister, Helen, rode horses to school in Victorville until the family bought a Model T for their commute. The Herlick children were accustomed to hard work. Accompanied by his sisters Helen, Clara, and Louise, Joe did morning and evening chores, taking care of livestock and crops. On a cattle buying trip to the local county fair in1920, with his father, young Joe saw his first airplane. The stunt plane flew loops above the fairgrounds and landed nearby for the crowds inspection. From that day forward, Joe claimed he knew that day that he wanted to be a flier. With his family supporting this dream, after graduating from Victorville High School in 1929, Joe attended the San Bernardino of Aeronautical Engineering, graduating in1932. He was accepted as a flying cadet at Randolph Air Base in San Antonio and graduated with his pilot wings from Kelly Air Force Base in 1935. Looking for opportunities to fly, he signed on as a pilot for Pan American-Grace Airways, flying in South America, based in Santiago, Chile. However, as he saw the build up of the great war to come, he left commercial aviation to join the Army Air Corps in 1938. In 1943, he married his beautiful wife, Joanne Jones, in Menlo Park, California. Joe was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross as a member of the first flight of bombers to fly non-stop from Hamilton Field, California to Hickam Field, Hawaii several months before Pearl Harbor. This mission paved the way for the military build up in the Pacific. He served in the Pacific in World War II flying bombers. He went on to command the 406 Fighter Interceptor Wing at Manston Air Force Base in southeastern England from 1953-55. serving at Strategic Air Command Headquarters as Deputy Director of Air Material, he was awarded the Legion of Merit for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services… serving as Deputy Commander at Tinker and Kelly Air Force Bases, he retired in 1967. Upon his he retirement, he received the Distinguished Service Cross. Known for their exceptionally gracious hospitality, Joe and Joanne Herlick were legendary hosts wherever they lived. loved nothing better than gathering their many friends for dinner parties in their home. With Joe as chef at the bar-b-que and Joanne creating magic in the kitchen, they were doing organic, local cooking decades before the terms were invented. Wherever they lived, throughout the world, they sought out and prepared the best local meat, fish, fruit and vegetables. Joe was an avid gardener with a green thumb. Everything grew to excess! The landscapes of their many homes were always filled with luscious tomatoes vines, fragrant mint, and vivid baskets of petunias. Joe Herlick is survived by his beloved and devoted wife of 64 years, Joanne Jones Herlick, his daughter Christine Herlick Aubrey, son-in-law Charles Edward Aubrey, granddaughters Sarah Kingsley Aubrey and Alexandra Elizabeth Aubrey, Sarahs husband, Eric Paul Harmon, and great granddaughter, Lucy Belle Harmon. The family wishes to extend special gratitude for the loving care given to Joe in the last days of his life by Josie and Valerie Lopez. |
