Obituary: Richard Allen "Dick" Hedrick, loving and dedicated husband of over 48 years, encouraging and inspiring Dad to three daughters, proud Popi of four grandchildren, and welcoming father to two sons-in-law, bravely fought the battle against lymphoma and won the ultimate victory when he returned home to his Heavenly Father on , Dec. 7, 2013. Service: In celebration of Richard's life, the family will receive visitors from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. , with a service to follow at 6 p.m., at Hampton Inn, 1600 Hurst Town Drive, Hurst, 76054. A service of interment in Arlington, Va., will be scheduled at a later date, to be determined. Memorials: Gifts may be made to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, http://www.lls.org/waystohelp/ donate/, 1-888-557-7177. Born Feb. 6, 1942, in Huntington, W.Va., to Norman and Alice Hedrick, Richard was always a high achiever and believed in going the extra mile, always doing his best in all of his endeavors. He was well known for his survival skills in the toughest of conditions; he worked as a lifeguard, and attained the rank of Eagle Scout at the age of 14. Richard graduated from Great Bridge High School in Chesapeake, Va., in 1959, at the age of 16. He attended Ferrum before enlisting in the U.S. Air Force, where he was invited to attend OCS, due to his diligence and exceptional problem-solving skills. Dick chose to remain on duty serving the flight-line in aviation electronics, as he believed he could best serve his country in that capacity. As a staff sergeant, he was both an instructor and mentor, and was able to share his in-depth and often uncanny electronics knowledge and abilities, alongside his strong patriotism and love of country. He was a two-tour Vietnam veteran, and was honorably discharged from the U.S. Air Force with a service record that includes numerous commendations and medals. Following his service in the Air Force, Dick returned to his hometown of Chesapeake, Va., with his wife, Sandra, where they built their family home. Richard subsequently worked for General Electric and Tandy Corporation, and in 1989, relocated from Virginia to Fort Worth as an international electronics buyer for Tandy Corp. Richard was well traveled, and had an appreciation for other cultures, art and music. As family grill master, he enjoyed cooking, both indoors and out. He was a tenacious crossword puzzler and a formidable Scrabble opponent. His scouting experience provided us with a family camping expert, as he could start a campfire with two sticks, create a masterpiece meal in the wilderness, pitch a tent in the dark while it was raining, and tell the best campfire stories imaginable. Richard had natural musical talents and was a self-taught guitar player. His ability to conceptualize a completed project, including the necessary steps involved, coupled with his gift for woodworking, yielded numerous building design, remodeling and repair projects. Richard's unique sense of humor, his love of practical jokes and the magic tricks he performed for his children and grandchildren provided us all with much laughter and love over the years. An animal lover with a decided preference for dogs over cats, Richard also leaves behind his loving Yorkies, Olivia and Sumo. As a Christian, Richard understood and appreciated the gift of life. He also embraced and modeled both love and forgiveness. He was a devoted husband, father, brother and friend who will be terribly missed until we meet again. Well done, Dad, we love you! Survivors: His beautiful bride and partner in life of over 48 years, Sandra Ferguson Hedrick; three daughters, Tammy Hedrick-Robertson of Virginia Beach, Va., Jennifer H. Young of Grandview and Andrea H. Ramos of Bedford; grandchildren, Benjamin J. Harrington, Harrison J. Hedrick Robertson, Thomas Richard Harrington and Caitlynn A. Robertson; and sons-in-law, Randy Young and Kaz Ramos. Richard is also survived by two sisters, Betty Bryant of Suffolk, Va., and Margaret Cuthriell of Portsmouth, Va.; and brother, Charles Hedrick of Chesapeake, Va. |

Obituary: Mae Gover Hedrick, age 92, was born May 16, 1922 in Granger, Iowa to John Elva & Stacy Emmaline Evans Gover. She went to be with her Lord & Saviour , 5, 2014 following struggles with Lewy Body Dementia. As a young child her family traveled with their belongings by horse drawn wagon & a pickup in the mid-1920s from Iowa to central Missouri where they would live in several towns around the Lake of the Ozarks. Eighth grade graduation was from Clarksburg School, Missouri, where she wore a dress which her sister had made...the dress was kept and she recently once again fit into it. Typhoid Fever in the tenth grade prevented her from finishing high school but when she was well enough she began working at various jobs including as a waitress and in a church office. It was hard living on the Harrison farm outside Eldon, Missouri, but she would gladly share about no indoor plumbing while living at home, smoking the meat of hogs they raised and Molly the Mule. Mae made a profession of her faith as a 13 year old during a revival at Osage Baptist Church, Missouri. The following night her dad made a profession of his faith and they were baptised together in a creek. Until 91 years old she taught School from preschool children though senior adults. Mae believed in being involved in missions leading GAs, GA camp & YWA, providing Operation Christmas Child boxes through Samaritan's Purse and supporting missions offerings. Mae was a bookkeeper for more than 35 years in Graham, TX and Austin, TX, retiring at the age of 72. Always a lover of animals, after her retirement she became involved in having neighborhood feral cats spayed & neutered as well as rescuing newly born feral kittens, bottle feeding and socializing them until ready for adoption. Two, Possum & Patches, were kept by Mae & Judith and have been important parts of their lives. Mae inherited the love of entertaining, cooking and baking from her mother learning to cook on a wood stove as a young girl and continued cooking until she no longer had the stamina to stand at the stove. Holidays were family times and enough food prepared to feed many more than the six to eight that would be there. The ecord keeper kept records of what was prepared for Christmases, Thanksgivings and Easter dinners and other holidays. Friends and neighbors looked forward to cranberry jelly and cheeseballs each Christmas. The family especially misses the divinity (which she could make in any weather), pralines, banana pudding and pies. The mini cheesecakes were a hit wherever they were taken. To preserve her recipes a family cookbook was compiled which included photos and information from throughout her life...wish we had some of her dumplings! Mae could have some strong opinions and carried many through life. One was she did not like her first name given at birth because of it being a boy's name, possibly a friend of her mother. leaving home she made the change to using her middle name, Mae, as her given name, although it took most of her family many years to start using it. Some never did. Her daughter, though knowing the name, understood the dislike and promised to never tell anyone, including the grandchildren. That promise continues to now. However, when the grandchildren were older they were determined to learn it on their own. And they did! The family moved to Texas in 1943 from Tennessee where her daughter, Judith, was born. Mae had many friends in all of the places where the family lived. Friends in Paint Rock, TX, began the collection of Fostoria crystal; a Friendship quilt from Buford, TX; Moe became name called by Merle; Margaret, faithfully came each to take trash bins to the street. Mae's laugh would easily give her away when in the room with her. We look forward to hearing it again. Mae was predeceased by her parents, John and Emma Gover; brothers, Jim Gover, Frank Gover, Johnny Gover; sister, Ruth Gover Saunders; nephews, Ed Gover and Ernie Saunders, Jr; niece, Wilma Gover Hathaway. She is survived by daughter, Judith Hedrick Koon, Austin; granddaughter & husband, Stacye Koon Walden & Chris, Panama City, FL; grandson & wife, Joel Koon & Sonja, Wake Forest, NC; four great-grandchildren to whom she was known as GGMa: Alexander, Amber and Andrew Koon, Ashley Walden; brother, Bill Gover, Hilmar, CA; niece, Louise Gover Campell; nephews, Dan & Jim Gover. She had a special relationship with a dear friend, the late Mildred Perrin of Hutto, who made the most delicious Perrin Blueberry Banana Pie. That relationship continued with Mildred's children: Letha, Margaret, Eilene, Ethel, Debbie, Dottie, Keith, Wanda and their families. |
