STORY OF BILL HAUGHTS LIFE Some called him Dad, others called him Grandpaw or Peepaw, a few called him Mr. B. or Mr. Bill, and many called him Billy Ray or Bill, but to all he was a man of God, a man of a loving family, a man of his community and country and a man of many friends. Born 12, 1928 as Billy Ray Haught in Hamilton, Texas to Dailey and Lena Haught, he was a child of the depression period and for a short period of time, his family lived in an abandoned train car. At the age of 4, he was raised along with his brother, Alva Dean, by his father who worked on the railroad. Shortly thereafter, Dailey married Iremeter, and he settled into a normal family pattern in Josephine, Texas. Helping the family with finances, he worked planting onions and in the cotton gin until he entered the Marine Corp at age 17. He grew into a man in the Marine Corp using his typing and organization skills to earn his way to the rank of Corporal. Stationed in Camp Pendleton, he lived the California lifestyle riding the highways and hillsides on his Indian motorcycle. Upon leaving the Marine Corp he moved to Brenham, Texas and attended Blinn while working at the local movie theatre. It was at the City Diner in Brenham that he met and soon married a beautiful waitress named Theresa. And the rest of his life is all because two people met and fell in love. Living in Brenham the first year of their marriage, they wasted no time in having Bonnie Jeanne in 1951. moving to Magnolia Gardens near east Houston, off the ship channel, David Ray was born in 1954. Bill worked at Baker Oil Tools during the days and at Brown Express on some evenings with his new friend, Henry McCoy. For entertainment, Henry and Bill had yping races. Henry and Bill stayed friends their entire lives. were soon able to afford their first home on Arvana Steet in South Houston where Susan Marie was born in 1956 followed quickly by Betty Jo in 1957 (they were 15 months apart). were soon transferred by Baker Oil Tools to Los Angeles, California where they lived close to his favorite Uncle George Shipman, his wife Anne and their three (3) daughters. only lived there for 1 years but the families generated relationships that grew and stay strong to this day as seen by two (2) of Georges daughters in today audience, DeeDee Myers and her husband Ron, and Debi Sheets and her fiancé Dave Brundage. Bill continued to work at Baker Oil Tools in the export department, shipping, accounts payable, a manager of North American Customer Service, Fleet Manager, and then as assistant to the Vice President of Marketing where he earned the nickname BOTI-gram Bill which stood for Baker Oil Tool, Inc. Gram since he was responsible for creating many of the field procedures that are still in place today. He retired with honor after 40 years of service. Moving back to the Houston area, they built their Dream in Bammel Forest in Spring, Texas where they set roots and called home. At that time Spring had only 1 elementary school and a combined junior high/ high school, but on the verge of a population explosion in the late 60s and early 70s. In the face of aggressive land owners, Bill worked with other committed citizens to pass large school bonds that allowed the school district to grow into one of the better school districts in Texas, and afforded his children the benefit of attending. During this period of time Bill was actively involved in the band Booster Club, The Athletic Booster Club and the Tri-Club. Bill and Theresa burned up the roads making EVERY football continued... |

Obituary: David Haughey passed away May 9, 2013. Dave was born in Buffalo, New York 6, 1931. He was preceded in death by his mother Caroline Marx Palmer from Aberdeen, Scotland, Father David Martin Haughey from Glasgow Scotland. came to the US in the early 1900s settling in Buffalo, New York. His sister Caroline Patchell died in 2004. Dave is survived by his beloved wife of 25 years Jo Miller; sisters Jean Ann Bennett and husband Rodney of West Seneca, New York and Joan Ann Cooper and husband James of Tampa, FL; daughter Beth ODowd and husband Paul of Houston, son David Bruce Haughey and wife Martha of Oneida, NY and grandson David Michael Haughey and fiancée Karen Phorp , Syracuse, NY; step children Michael Miller, his wife Karen and their children Jessica, Matthew, Rachel, Meghan, Christopher and Olivia and Stephen Miller his wife Angie and children, Stephen, Jr, and fiancée Rachel Scarpinato, Alyssa, Catherine and Alex; as well as many nieces and nephews. A special note regarding his grandson: when Dave was in the hospital there were few if any doctors and nurses who didn know his grandson was in medical school in Syracuse and the winner of numerous prestigious awards. His greatest regret is that he couldn be physically present to see him graduate from medical school in 2014 and get married to Karen the following month. However his spirit will be there in love. Dave was in the United States Army, 11th Airborne Division from 1951-1954. Dave had a long career in the insurance industry specializing in corporate refinance. He worked first for Merchants Mutual Insurance Group leaving there as Vice President. He also worked for Commercial Credit, Gulf Insurance and Republic Insurance. Dave was a 32nd degree Master Mason, Masonic Lodge #1138, member of Buffalo Valley Consistory and was an Ismailia Shriner. Dave was a devoted friend of Bill W. for 32 years. He had the privilege of carrying the message to what was then the Soviet Union in 1985 and 1987. In 1985, he was part of the first group that took AA into hospitals and peoples homes. He returned in 1987 to meet again the doctors and people from the first trip finding one particular individual, Max, still sober. Nothing was more important to him than the men he sponsored and no greater delight than in a 12th step call. His goal was to live until May 4th since he believed his life really began on May 4th 1981. Both Jo and Dave want to thank all the friends and family who so generously gave of their time particularly the special group of people who showed up every night for more than a year and a half to bring Dave a meeting. A special tribute must be added to Dr. Sara Tranchina who is the best doctor anyone could ever have and whose loving kindness and gracious presence eased them both through a very difficult time. Dave endured much illness with the dignity and grace that had symbolized his life. He met each challenge with a profound belief that God would look after him. Add a bit of Scottish stoicism, a touch of the compassion learned in these last 32 years and there is a man who complained little and loved deeply. Since Dave donated his body to UT Southwestern Willed Body Program, a memorial service will be held May 18, 2013 at 10:00 AM at Sparkman Richardson with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers please send donations to Magdalen House, Salvation Army, or the charity of your choice. |
