Obituary: The unique, interesting and blessed life of Glen Hartman ended on , 1st, after a brief illness. Glens work and passions took him around the world numerous times and gave him the opportunity to meet and work with an amazing array of political, military and community leaders. Nevertheless, his life ended as he would have wanted – quietly, with family and friends close by giving him support and love. Glen is survived by his wife, Marian, sons Glen, Jr., Gary, Gene, Greg and Gordon, step-son Richard, seven grandchildren, two great grandchildren, six step grandchildren and 10 step great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife Mary Lou, who passed away in 2001. He was born on 11, 1929 in the south Texas town of Mathis to Richard and Elizabeth Hartman. He enrolled in the University of Texas at Austin in 1950 at the age of 16. He attended Princeton University and completed his fellowship there in 1963. Glens life was one of ironies, passions and achievements. He stuttered severely as a child and fought hard to overcome that challenge to eventually become a respected public speaker as well as political and TV personality. He grew up speaking German on a small south Texas sharecroppers farm and went on to a career that took him around the world taking advantage of his fluency in four languages. His knowledge of Russian led to him playing a key role during the Cuban Missile Crisis. During that time while on an island in the Florida Keys, he was as an interpreter of intercepted Russian radio traffic which assisted President Kennedy in standing strong in the face of Soviet attempts to break the American blockade of Cuba. Later in life he served as an intelligence officer working on top secret assignments behind the Iron Curtain and the Middle East. Ironically while serving in this often covert position, he was at the same time being seen weekly on local television as a weatherman. All who know Glen are well aware of his political passions and unabashed liberalism. But he prided himself on practical solutions and willingness to work with those of differing opinions if that meant getting something done. He took advantage of his visibility on television to put his love of political activism into action by getting elected to the San Antonio City Council from 1975 until 1979, eventually serving as Mayor Pro-Tem. He was proudest of his battles for single-member districts and planning for future water needs. In 1984 he became the first Executive Director of the Texas Public Building Authority, appointed by Governor Mark White. moving to Austin, he later became Mayor of the City of Lago Vista, just outside of Austin, where he worked to update that growing communitys building standards and zoning efforts. He was a lifelong Democrat, and loved discussing and working on political campaigns, either locally or statewide. For years he was seen as a nightly political commentator on local television news. Even during his final days in the hospital, nurses joked about his efforts to convince them, from behind his oxygen mask, to vote Democratic in the upcoming gubernatorial election. One of his final wishes was to ask for memorials in his name to Morgans Wonderland Park, created by his son, Gordon, or for contributions to the Bill White for Governor Campaign. In addition to his political activism, Glen was involved with activities related to the Catholic Church, as well as with the Lions Club, serving as President of the Founders Lions Club of San Antonio, which he proudly reminded everyone was the worlds oldest Lions Club. Glen would be proud of his legacy with family and friends who are more politically active or a bit more passionate about community and volunteer efforts because of the example he set during his giving and energetic life. ROSARY THURSDAY, JUNE 3, 2010 7:00 P.M. BLESSED SACRAMENT CATHOLIC CHURCH 600 OBLATE MASS FRIDAY, JUNE 4, 2010 9:30 A.M. BLESSED SACRAMENT CATHOLIC CHURCH Interment will follow in Holy Cross . |

Obituary: Gerald LeRoy Hartman passed away , 5, 2015 after a brief illness. A memorial service will be held 2:30 p.m., , 17 at Genesis Metro Church in Frisco, Texas. Visitation with the family will be 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the church. Born 14, 1935 in Dayton, Ohio Jerry was the youngest son of four children born to Marie Brinck and LeRoy Hartman. He grew up in Dayton, but moved to San Antonio with his mother to live with his oldest sister and family, where he graduated from Jefferson High School. Upon graduating high school in 1953 he attended the Schreiner Institute in Kerrville, Texas on a basketball scholarship. graduating, he turned down another basketball scholarship in Houston to return to Dayton to rekindle his romance with Irene Valassi. were married on 30, 1957 and moved to Kettering, Ohio, a suburb of Dayton. Jerry worked for NCR for 18 years. Several years after they married, they became parents to Cindy followed by Cheryl almost 4 years later. Jerry was active in his church, serving in numerous leadership roles. He also was a member of the Shriners organization and participated in many events, charitable functions and social activities throughout the country including parades, camping trips and other events the Shriners are known for, based on their own description as a fraternity based on fun, fellowship and principles of brotherly love, relief and truth. In 1973, Jerry accepted a job with Texas Instruments in Dallas, Texas. This move was influenced by several trips made with the Shriners, where they discovered some of the friendliest people in the world. a couple years, he found a home with Xerox, where he eventually retired in 2000 after 25 years. Jerry thoroughly enjoyed his retirement, taking annual trips to the Grand Canyon, class reunions and family gatherings across the country, regattas for his granddaughter and jump rope competitions for his grandson among many other adventures. As part of the weekly Hartman family routine, he loved having lunch on s with Irene, Cindy and Cheryl, and as schedules permitted, grandchildren, son-in-laws and special guests. This was always followed by a happy hour gathering in the evenings. As old age crept in, so did the aches and pains that come along with it – particularly in his hips and knees. But that didn’t stop him from anything. If there was fun to be had – he was there! Finally, in late , he became ill with congestive heart failure, which ultimately led his doctors to discover stage 4 melanoma, which had spread to his lung. There was no viable solution to this other than to keep him comfortable with the amazing support of hospice. He chose to live out his last days at home and died a peaceful death. Although his family and friends will miss him dearly, they will remember the many good times, talks, debates, and stories shared by all. Jerry loved to tell stories of his adventures on the road and had an amazing memory for places, roads, maps and the history related to the places he had visited. He is survived by his wife Irene Hartman, daughter Cindy Quinn, son-in-law Tim, and granddaughter Megan, daughter Cheryl Sizer, son-in-law Phill and grandson Sam. We love you and will miss you every day. God picked you out from all the rest, because He knew we’d love you the best!. If you would like to do something to honor Jerry’s life, please consider a donation to: Shriner’s Children’s Hospital or Hospice organization. |
