Obituary: From her birth in Vienna, Austria, 8, 1921, to her death morning of 31, 2010, Stefanie Michaela Kuehner sang, danced and charmed her way into countless lives. The joy she brought to loved ones and strangers alike is immeasurable and timeless. Young, petite Steffi outran the fastest boys and out-charmed the most alluring girls. During 26 years in her homeland, Steffi created finery from refuse during the depression; dodged bullets during a local civil uprising; fled through fields and forests from Russian invading forces; made Nazi soldiers back down from planned atrocities; and softened the hardest hearts. She confounded Catholic bishops; sang and acted in operettas; was an accomplished gymnast; treasured her family, especially her disabled brother; and allowed one special WWII GI to win her heart and hand. Daughter Susan was two when she made the hard decision to accompany her husband, Lane, on his return to America. During her 60-years in the US, Steffi added a son, Victor, to the family; baked homemade, whole wheat bread in the 1950s land of bleached white everything; became an American citizen only after the Civil Rights Act was adopted; and fulfilled her role as wife and mother with unrivaled quality and panache. Her 54 years as a Texan (51 in San Antonio) were busy: she decorated the new home of her dreams; helped found the St. Matthews United Methodist Church and sang in its choir; continued her personal civil rights efforts; sewed Susans Brahmadora costumes and prom dresses, scrubbed Victors athletic uniforms and doctored lacerations; served in the MacArthur Booster Club and the Foreign Exchange Student Program; bowled; square danced; knitted; and loved people without regard to race, ethnicity, creed, religion, or sexual orientation. Lane died, she returned to her religious roots and became a member of St Anthony de Padua Catholic Church. She is survived by her son Victor and his wife Sherri; their children Hannah, Meghan, and Jacob; daughter Susan and son Aaron; and nieces Brigitte and Regina. Her memory will be cherished by her many other family members and friends. Visitation and viewing: Sunset Memorial Park and , Fri 11/5 from 7-9pm; funeral mass: St Anthony de Padua Church, Sat 11/6 at 10am. Burial and wake to follow. Memorial donations: San Antonio Humane Society and Caritas. under the direction of Sunset , San Antonio, TX. |

Obituary: LEANDER -- Joyce Stevens Hammack passed from this life on the morning of , 14, 2016, at the age of 86. Service: 12:30 p.m. at Laurel Land Memorial Park. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. at Laurel Land. Joyce Hammack was born Gloria Joyce Pichini (Americanized from Piccinini) on 24, 1929, in Blue Island, Ill., a small town south of Chicago. The daughter of Italian immigrants, she grew up in a three-story yellow brick bungalow amidst a large vegetable garden, fragrant flower gardens and the best food on the planet, by way of her mother Gina's cooking. Her house was the hub of activity and gatherings among her three sisters, a large extended family and close family friends, during the Great Depression and Word War II years. There was always a bed and a meal for anyone who needed it, which explains her great empathy for those in need the she carried her entire life. In school, she was the co-editor of her high school newspaper and participated in many activities, being gifted as an artist and singer. In 1950, she married Robert "Bob" Stevens and moved to Ann Arbor, Mich., working as a secretary at the school while he earned his degree in engineering. Upon graduation, they moved to Fort Worth, where Bob took a job with Convair (later General Dynamics and Lockheed) to work on the nuclear airplane project. arrived to a non-air conditioned apartment in the middle of a horrible heat wave.. welcome to Texas! But, they stuck it out and put down deep roots in Fort Worth. To get out of the heat, Joyce took a job as a secretary at Convair, then the largest air conditioned building in the world, and worked there until she became pregnant with their first child. She was a very beautiful women and once, during a vacation to Los Angeles, she was approached by autograph seekers convinced she was Elizabeth Taylor. As a stay-at-home-mom with two children, Joyce became a very active parent, involved in the schools and neighborhood organizations. She was president of the PTA at Bruce Shulkey Elementary, once pulling an all-nighter to sort prizes for the annual school carnival the next day. She became educated in the fine arts as her children became involved in ballet and music. She volunteered with the Youth Orchestra of Greater Fort Worth and took art and art history classes, becoming a fine oil painter and calligrapher. Her love and study of art also led her to become a docent at the Amon Carter Museum of Western Art where she gave tours to visitors for many years. She also was an avid gardner and was active with the Fort Worth Gardening Club. Her community involvement included serving on the Wedgwood Sector Planning Committee, where she had a hand in the planning of Candleridge and setting the requirements that the developers had to include the greenbelt, French Lake Park and the walking paths that run through that unique neighborhood in southwest Fort Worth. As her children got older, she took a secretarial job at TCU, working in the Fine Arts Department and also was able to travel with her husband to Europe several times related to his work, once staying for three months on one of his business assignments in Madrid. She loved to entertain the Spaniards that Bob worked with who came to Fort Worth for meetings. Her first marriage ended in 1987, but two years later she married Henry "Hank" Hammack, a professor of Theater at TCU that she had known when she worked at TCU. Their paths crossed and he had been recently been widowed. Hank was a wonderful husband who adored and doted on her every day. She became involved with University Christian Church, where Hank was a founder, designer and director of the Annual Boar's Head and Yule Log Festival. sang in the UCC choir for many years and even participated in several holiday concerts with the New York Pops Orchestra under Skitch Henderson, performing in Carnegie Hall. She greatly enjoyed the life around UCC and the TCU theater department, going to shows and concerts and meeting interesting people. The wonderful collection of oil paintings she created during her life will serve as her legacy to her family for generations to come. She was a generous friend, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and her family is grateful for all that she gave them. Survivors: She is survived by her sister, Jean Forrester; children, Barbie Harrison and Daniel Stevens and his wife Marilou; grandchildren, Tyler Harrison, Sean Harrison, Kari Phillips and her husband Matt, Ryan Anthony Martinez Stevens and Felicia Danielle Martinez Stevens; and her great-grandchildren, Sadler and Parker Phillips; and a large extended family in Texas, Illinois, North Carolina, Florida, California and Italy. |

Obituary: under the direction of Sparkman/Hillcrest , Dallas, TX. John (Jack) A. Hammack, devoted husband and father, was called home by his Heavenly Father on 13, 2016. He was 89 years old, and his family was at his bedside. Jack was born on 14, 1926 in Greenville, Mississippi to Mariena and John A. Hammack. Jack spent his early years in Mississippi before being awarded --- what he referred to as the opportunity of a lifetime --- an appointment to attend the United States Military Academy, aka West Point. At The Point, he excelled in many areas including athletics, and participated in the U.S. Olympic trials in the 400 meter run. Jack was also a member of the world record distance medley relay team. He graduated in the top twenty percent of his class in 1949, and was commissioned by the United States Air Force as one of a pioneering group of all-weather instrument jet aviation instructors at Moody Air Force Base in Georgia. During his commission, Jack was also assigned as Aide de Camp and pilot for the Superintendent of West Point. In 1950, Jack met Gloria Slaughter on a blind date. She was the love of his life, and in 1952 they married at Highland Park Presbyterian Church. fulfilling his West Point commission in 1954, Jack chose civilian life where he built a successful career in the oil and gas industry. Initially, he worked in the oil fields of General American Oil . From there, he became one of the youngest Vice-Presidents of American Petrofina (Fina). Later, Jack went out on his own to establish Hammack Oil and fulfilled his dream of being his own boss. He held this position and steadfastly remained its sole decision maker through of 2015. Jacks Christian faith dominated his life. He was a long-standing member of Highland Park Presbyterian Church, where he taught School for many years, served as a Deacon, and later became an Elder. In particular, Jack truly lived the Word: o whom much is given, much is required. This biblical principle created a servant leader in every sense and played out in his selfless service in public and charitable endeavors. A man of integrity and kind-heartedness, Jack was a humble and generous philanthropist who gave his resources to make his community a better place to live. His many contributions extended through the greater Dallas area. He was a Vice Chair of the Board of Presbyterian Hospital, a member of the Greater Dallas Crime Commission and the Highland Park Independent School District Educational Foundation. He served as President of both the Dallas Petroleum Club and the Dallas Country Club. In 1980 he was elected Mayor of the Town of Highland Park and served to 1984. Locally he supported Southern Methodist University, the Meadows Museum, the Dallas Arboretum and other charitable entities. A self-made man who was born into little but whose accomplishments were tremendous, Jack never forgot his roots. If someone was in trouble or needed help, Jack was the first one to offer a hand up. Whether it was a friend, acquaintance and in many cases, those he did not know personally, Jack, quietly and many times anonymously, provided for them. Touched by the burglary of the home of his faithful housekeeper of many years, Jack enlisted the help of Dallas civic and political leaders and co-founded Safer Dallas Better Dallas, where he raised millions of dollars to support the Dallas Police department in order to help improve the safety of the city he so loved. Throughout all this, he never sought the limelight. Jack served as a Trustee and Director of The Meadows Foundation for 35 years. In recognition of his dedicated service and many contributions to the Foundations work, the Meadows Board recently established a perpetual fund in his name to provide grants to charitable causes that were important to him. For his country, Jack served as Special Assistant to the Deputy Secretary of Defense, Texas Governor - William P. Clements, Jr., at the Pentagon in 1973. wards and throughout his life, he contributed to West Point in innumerable ways. In 1990, he was elected a Trustee at Large of West Points Association of Graduates (AOG). Later, he became the AOGs Vice Chairman in 1993, a position he held until becoming Chairman and CEO in 1997. During his five years as Chair of the AOG, he led West Points first comprehensive fundraising effort, which resulted in contributions of over $220 million to the Point. When West Points AOG awarded him the 2003 Distinguished Graduate Award, they described Jack as shaping every aspect of his course in life with steadfast devotion to the principles expressed in the motto of the Military Academy: Duty, Honor, Country. Jack is predeceased by his parents and his daughter, Elizabeth Slaughter Hammack, his sister-in-law, Betty Lu Slaughter Williams and brother-in-law, Joel T. Williams, Jr. Nothing was more important to Jack than his family. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Gloria Slaughter Hammack and two sons, John A. Hammack, Jr. and his wife Terri, and Albert D. Hammack and his wife, Melinda. He is also survived by his five grandchildren, Marshall and Shelby Hammack, and Dr. Joshua Roberson and his wife Suzi, Jessica Carlson and Julia Price, and numerous relatives from Mississippi. The family would like to thank Dorothy VanSickle, Jaynie Denmon, Dan Gerlach, John Gardere and John Stewart for their many years of loyal service to Jack and his business pursuits. The family also thanks the Rev. Charles Ragsdale, Ernest Abulala, Bizunesh Wondimu, Dora Navarro, Esmeralda Velasquez, Fikerte Beshah, and Yezena Ayele for their compassionate care of Jack during his later years. Their loving continued... |
