Obituary: Hugh Halff, Jr., age 76, passed away on , 4, 2011. He was born in San Antonio and attended San Antonio Academy, Texas Military Institute, Princeton University, and the University of Texas. HughÂs family immigrated from Alsase Loraine and settled in the San Antonio area in the late 1880Âs. The family business spread from cattle and dry goods to oil, communication and other areas. HughÂs great uncle, G.A. C. Halff founded WOAI radio and TV which at an early age he took over as President and became very successful in the companyÂs operations. Enterprises also under HughÂs leadership included Southland Industries, Blanco Oil, Glastron Boat and Superior Pontiac. Eventually all these businesses came under the umbrella of Conroy, Inc. which was listed on the American Stock Exchange. Hugh was a well rounded man and enjoyed a great variety of interest and activities. As a young man, he was an avid car and boat racer. He was a passionate photographer and developed his own photographs from the age of twelve. The outdoors had great appeal for him and he spent many hours fishing and hunting. He was an avid Spurs fan and attended all home town games commenting vividly on their play. An interest in art developed later in his life, and opened a whole new world of study and travel. Always devoted to San Antonio, Hugh was an active member of many community boards. He was elected to the San Antonio River Authority, and served for over twenty years with the San Antonio Medical Foundation. He was an active contributor to several local hospitals, and was especially generous to the Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research. As his love of art increased, he became involved with several museums serving on the American Art Advisory Committee of the Dallas Museum of Art, the Board of Directors of the Amon Carter Museum, Board of Directors of the Archives of American Art, Board of Governors of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and Board of Directors of the San Antonio Museum of Art. Hugh was also a member of the Argyle Club, where he served as President for two years, Club Giraud, the Order of the Alamo, The German Club, the San Antonio Country Club, and the Chevaliers du Tastevin. He was preceded in death by his mother, Catherine Halff Luhn, and father, Hugh A. L. Halff and his sister, Catherine Halff Edson. He is survived by his wife, Marie Mahone Halff; his son, Hugh Halff, III and wife, Dee; his daughter, Stephanie Street and husband, Jerry; two granddaughters, Catherine Ann Street and Ashley Ray Street; and his brother-in-law, Tom Edson. Obituary: HALFF Howard A. Halff, a San Antonio native and fourth generation Texan passed away 14, 2009, in San Antonio. Born 20, 1925, he was an Eagle Scout and graduate of Jefferson High School. He attended the University of Missouri and graduated in 1946 from the University of Texas with a Chemical Engineering degree and as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Naval Reserve. He served as a deck officer on the USS Adria AF 30 a stores ship carrying goods and refrigerated items to Europe and isolated bases. Following his naval service, Howard was active in various capacities as an engineer for Texaco for 38 years. He ended his employment in New Orleans in charge of gas sales for the Louisiana area. Upon retirement he returned to San Antonio where he was active in ranching. Among the many organizations he enjoyed supporting were UT Austin, UTSA, UTHSC San Antonio, McNay Art Museum, Boysville, Unicorn , San Antonio Zoological Society, Temple Beth El and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Howard was preceded in death by his parents, Harry A. and Anyce P. Halff; and his brother, Thomas A. Halff. He is survived by his wife, Betty Murray Halff; and her daughter, Melissa Murray Jeffery; her son, Luke; and her daughter, Dundee Murray Whealen and husband, Kevin. Other survivors are his brother, Alex H. Halff and wife, Sally; nephews, Glenn Halff and wife, Mindi Alterman, Harry Halff and wife, Lisa, Jim Halff and wife, Danna; and grandnieces, Allison and Marghi Halff; and grandnephews, Jesse, Travis, Cody, Joshua and Daniel Halff. The family acknowledges with grateful hearts the friendship and care of Charles Wallace and sustained medical care of Drs. Charles Andrews, Randall Bell, and Charles Burch and the nurses and staff of Pulmonary Physicians. The familys appreciation extends to Drs. Obituary: Dr. Henry M. Halff, Ph.D., died peacefully on 10, 2015 in San Antonio, TX, at the age of 72. Henry is survived by his wife Jean, his son Larry, his son-in-law Randy Windham, his brother Bro, and two stepsons, Bradley and Brent Watson. Henry was born on 26, 1942 in McAlester, OK, to Lee B. and Albert H. Halff of Dallas, TX. He graduated from Philips Exeter Academy (1960); received a B.A. in Psychology from Stanford University (1964); and earned a Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology from the University of Texas at Austin (1969). Henry became a distinguished research psychologist. He taught at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champagne, and subsequently managed major basic research programs on intelligent-computer-based instruction, models of cognitive skills, and biological intelligence at the Office of Naval Research in Arlington, VA. He was a pioneer in computerized instruction, serving as both a consultant and as the founder of his own firm, specializing in interactive instructional software. Over the course of his life, Henry lived in Myrtle Beach, SC; Baltimore, MD; Dallas, TX; Exeter, NH; Palo Alto, CA; Austin, TX; Ann Arbor, MI; Champagne, IL; Arlington, VA; San Diego, CA; and, finally, San Antonio, TX, where he made his home for over twenty years. It is no wonder that Henry loved to travel the world with his wife and family. As great as Henry's love of adventure was his love of his home state, Texas, and its country music, barbecue, and beer. He was a life-long athlete. conquering competitive running and cycling, he became an accomplished Masters swimmer. As a treasured member of Masters of South Texas, he placed in regional and national competitions, as well as participating in the open-water swim from Alcatraz Island to San Francisco for eight years in a row, from 2007 through 2014. Henry was a witty and articulate writer, who often authored entertaining online accounts of his own and others' adventures. He also was skilled at sketching and painting, and an expert public speaker. Henry is remembered for both his fine mind and his great compassion, and as always being the champion of the underdog. Throughout his life, he tirelessly served his fellow human beings. He once declared, "My goal in life is to serve others." He achieved that goal with enthusiasm and kindness. Henry grew up as a member of the First Unitarian Church of Dallas, and was a vital leader in Unitarian Universalist congregations throughout his life, most notably the Unitarian Universalist Church of Arlington and the Community Unitarian Universalist Church in San Antonio. Obituary: Alexander Hart Halff, a respected San Antonio businessman, rancher and civic leader passed away at the age of 78 at his home, 9, 2010. He was a graduate of Jefferson High School and the University of Texas at Austin with a BBA in International Economics and a commission in the U.S. Naval Reserve. He served in the Western Pacific from 1952-1954 and later served as Executive Officer of the Naval Reserve Surface Division 8-103. Alex began his business career in Manizales, Colombia and then joined the Texas land title industry. He built the company his father founded, Alamo Title , from a local business to a respected statewide presence. Beginning in the abstract plant in 1955, he became President in 1970 and retired as Chairman of the Alamo Title organization in 1999. Alex was active in the local business community, the title industry and civic organizations throughout his life. He served on the corporate boards of Bexar Bank, RepublicBank, First RepublicBank, and Churchs Fried Chicken. He was also active on the boards of The San Antonio Kiwanis club, the United Way of San Antonio, Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce, the National Conference of Christians and Jews, the San Antonio builders Association, the Development Board of Incarnate Word , the UTSA Business Advisory Council, the National Jewish Hospital and the Witte Museum. He was president of the San Antonio Junior Chamber of Commerce, the Title Underwriters of Texas, the Community Guidance of Bexar , Boysville Inc., the Texas Land Title Association and the Bexar Land Title Association. He chaired Texas Title Insurance Guaranty Association, The UTSA Development Board, the Trustees of the Boysville Foundation and the San Antonio Medical Foundation. A San Antonio native and a fourth generation Texan, Alex took a great interest in his family history. He researched his familys cattle ranching beginnings in 19th century Texas, instigating an authoritative historical book on the subject. He wrote a second book tracing the familys ranching over time. He also authored a book on the history of the St Charles Bay Hunting and Fishing Club on the Texas coast where he fished every summer. He was an avid outdoorsman, hunter and fisherman who instilled a love and knowledge of the outdoors to his children and grandchildren. Throughout his life, the familys Frio county ranch was a gathering place for Alex, his brothers and his children; as well as a creative platform for ranching, farming and game management ideas and practices. Alex is preceded in death by his parents, Harry A. and Anyce P. Halff, and brothers Howard A. and Thomas A. Halff.
