Obituary: HAENDEL Ilona Haendel moved onto the next world on 7, 2010 at the age of 89, in her own bed, in her own home. She was born to Miriam and Yakob Szanto on 26, 1921, in Budapest, Hungary. Ilona graduated high school there in 1939 and endured Europes anti-Jewish discrimination, persecution and deportations. Her survival instinct gave her the will to save herself, her mother, and others. She helped fellow Jews by passing out documents provided by Raoul Wahlenberg which would protect Jews under the auspices of the Swedish government. During a forced death march, Ilona managed to escape with her mother and evade the Gestapo. When she re-entered the city, she avoided the Ghetto and found refuge with her friend and housekeeper, Ja osne Orosz and her family, until the liberation in 1945. ve remained friends for life. Ilona never forgot Ja osnes kindness and would send her clothes to re-sell so that she could support her own family behind the Iron Curtain. In the 1990s Ilona nominated Ja osne to Yad Vashem as one of the Righteous Among the Nations. She was awarded a medal recognizing her heroism. Eight years ago, Ilona had her entire family convene in Budapest to meet and pay tribute to her hero. Ilona was always in her debt. She and her immediate family moved to Palestine in 1947 and settled in Haifa. There she met her future husband, Nathan Haendel, witnessed the birth of the State of Israel in 1948, and married one year later. Her eldest son was born in 1950. Ilona and her new family moved to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where she operated and taught at the best kindergarten in the city. Her second son, Doron was born there in 1957. She immigrated to the USA in 1959 and settled in Framingham, Mass. Her daughter, Varda, was born six weeks later. Ilona was a Hebrew educator for many years. She became a successful realtor with Century 21 and received many awards. Ilona has resided in San Antonio, Texas since 1991, where she had a positive influence on all people she met. She volunteered her services to Agudas Achim Synagogue as a Hebrew Teacher. Ilona broke her silence about the horrors that she both witnessed and endured during the Holocaust. She spoke at area schools for the San Antonio Holocaust Memorial Museums Educational Outreach Program. Ilona was videotaped, telling her own story for the Steven Spielberg Shoah Foundation, becoming part of a permanent archive. Her understanding of evil and her deep concern for the oppressed caused her to speak out publicly at rallies for the People of Darfur. Ilona spoke locally, nationally, and internationally. She was adamant that all people must actively stand against genocide and exhorting everyone accept personal responsibility for fighting evil. Ilona enjoyed her independence, loved and doted over her family, and had a strong faith in God. She cooked Jewish, Hungarian and Israeli foods. Ilona created a home which was traditionally Jewish, especially caring and warm. She was very generous and giving. She is survived by: Her younger brother, Mattitiyahu Ben Horesh of Holon, Israel; her children and their spouses, son, Dan Haendel and Ellen Goldberg of Fairfax VA, son, Doron and Sharon Haendel of Woodstock ME, daughter, Varda and Dr. Adam Ratner of Shavano Park, TX; grandchildren, Tamar and her husband, Rabbi Eitan Mintz, Kaitlyn Kennedy, Rebecca Haendel, Jacob Haendel, Jack Ratner and Shayna Ratner; and Dr. Joan Ratner her Sister. The entire family wishes to thank the Chevra Kadisha. Special thanks and immense gratitude to the entire staff of Hospice Inspiris, especially Kelly, Dr. C., Elias and Dana. Thanks as well, to Dr. Karen Shimatsu, Ilonas family physician and her staff. GRAVESIDE SERVICE MONDAY MARCH 8, 2010 4:00 P.M.
