Obituary: Clifford Thorne Hackard, LTC USAR (retired) died , 28, 2015, at age 98, in Austin Texas. Born 4, 1916, in a log cabin near Argyle, IA, he was the son of Clarence Austin Hackard, Sr. and Edith Sargent Hackard. Clifford was highly intelligent, graduating as Valedictorian of the Argyle, IA, High School Class of 1933. His love of education motivated him later in life to make numerous sacrifices to insure that his three children would have a college education. He grew up doing the hard work required to make a living on a family farm during the early years of the Great Depression. It was there where he learned a love of hunting from his father and brother, and, with his beloved cousins, developed the skill to supply meat for the family table. His love of hunting continued throughout his life as he hunted pheasant, turkey, and quail in the fields surrounding his childhood home and later hunted dove and deer in the fields surrounding Austin, TX, where he settled in , 1956. His skill at shooting would serve him well once he was drafted into the U. S. Army in 1942. As a member of The Greatest Generation, he was commissioned as An officer and a gentleman by Act of Congress. Clifford found his lifes vocation in the Army, where his keen intelligence, strong sense of honor and discipline, and bravery under fire allowed him to rise through the ranks without the benefit of a college education. As a Captain and company commander, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, the second highest award for valor for members of the U. S. Army, for his action during the Battle of the Hurtgen Forest in 1944. During that same action he earned a Purple Heart, as a result of being wounded by a German sniper. Clifford remained in the Army after WWII, serving in the Army of the Occupation in Japan. He later fought in the Korean War, and served as a military advisor to the French in Indochina (later known as Vietnam). He retired from the Army in 1962, and later began a fifteen year career with the Texas Employment Commission, (now known as the Texas Workforce Commission). He found jobs for a generation of Texans, and finished his career at TEC insuring that Job Corps graduates were able to utilize their training, by helping to place them in positions throughout Texas. this second retirement, Clifford returned to his love of hunting. He also utilized his knowledge of and skill in repairing firearms by displaying and trading his collection of rifles and shotguns at gun shows throughout Texas and Oklahoma. He was highly regarded for his expertise with shotguns and for honest dealing. He was particularly sought out as an expert on the classic Model 11 Winchester shotgun. Even after he quit hunting, he continued to enjoy his love of skeet shooting until the age of 91, when weakening eyesight and the closing of his favorite skeet range made it impossible for him to continue. Even while his eyesight was diminishing, his muscle memory allowed him to regularly hit a high percentage of the clay pigeon targets from all the stations at his regular range. Although Clifford had made a promise to himself that he would not marry until World War II was over, his resolve was broken when he met a pretty, kind, and smart teacher, Mary Lucille Quisenberry, of Fort Worth, TX, while he was training to enter the fray in Europe. were married on 17, 1943, in Forth Worth, TX and Lucille had the first of their three children the following . Lucille died in 1968, Clifford met the lovely and talented Lois Margery Good, and they married on 24, 1970, in Dilley, TX. It was due to Lois loving care and devotion that he lived to be almost 99. In addition to giving him the will to live through their loving relationship, she also served as his medical advocate to ensure that he received the care he needed. He often remarked that he had excellent taste in wives, marrying two very different but wonderful women. In addition to a strong work ethic and an unwavering sense of right and wrong, Clifford had a wicked sense of humor, which he passed on to later generations of his family. Growing up during the depression as the son of a farmer who was also a carpenter, he learned to repair almost anything around the house and yard, including numerous reasures he discovered at garage sales. He strove for perfection in all he did. Clifford was preceded in death by his parents; his older brother, Clarence Hackard Jr.; his first wife, Lucille, and their son, Edward Scott Hackard. He is survived by his wife, Lois; his children, Elaine Hackard (and spouse Norman Perry), of Nacogdoches, TX; son, James Clifford Hackard (and spouse Sandra McBride Hackard), of San Antonio, TX; and daughter-in-law, Wanda Kellum, of Woodbridge, VA. His grandchildren include Andrew Scott Hackard, Gretchen Hackard, James Johnson, Tammy Hackard, and Jeff Radcliffe. He also counts among his family Lois numerous relatives whom he grew to love; a love that was returned many times over. He was a loving, generous, and devoted son, husband, father and grandfather. He will be greatly missed. |
