Obituary: Linda Louise Haby, 62, passed away peacefully while sleeping on 24, 2014 from complications created by Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), a disease she had for 14 months. She was born to John Roy and Mary Petrin on 15, 1952 at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Oakland California. Linda was a child of the world. Until high school, her family moved every year to her Dads next duty station which began in San Francisco, California; then Astoria, Oregon; next Kwajalein Atoll (part of the Marshall Islands); followed by Pacheco, California; then Pearl Harbor; Newport, Rhode Island; Norfolk, Virginia; Waukegan, Illinois; and San Diego, California; Rota, Spain for four years; and finally back to Norfolk, Virginia. She attended Farragut High School at Naval Station Rota Spain all four years, and was voted Most Likely to Succeed her senior year. Lindas high school class was relatively small but the friendships formed have lasted a lifetime. Being immersed in the Spanish culture during her high school years, Linda became fluent in Spanish which opened many doors in her professional life. In the fall of 1970, Linda began nursing studies at California State University, Fresno. graduating with a B.S. in , Linda did hospital work and provided care for the countys Juvenile Hall residents. several years work as a Registered Nurse, Linda enrolled in the Nurse Practitioner Credentialing Program, and with two years of advanced training at Fresno State became a Board-certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner. Linda met Michael G. Haby, her husband of 32+ years, on the Eastern Shore of Virginia during the time she had a Fellowship with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to serve a region with high infant mortality. She worked with Dr. Steven Q. Rodgers, a pediatrician, for about three years. This team significantly magnified the level and quality of pediatric care offered in this rural area. On May 15, 1982 Michael and Linda were married, and two weeks later the newlyweds were packing up and moving to Corpus Christi for Mikes position with Texas A&M University. Linda was among the first pediatric nurse practitioners in Corpus Christi, Texas and began her work at the Children and Youth Clinic in Robstown, Texas, a satellite clinic supported by Driscoll Hospital and directed by Dr. Roberto Mejia. In 1983 the late Mrs. Helen Reeves, Director of with the City/ Department, approached Linda about taking over the Well Baby Clinics which served families with limited resources. Initially, Lindas weekly patient load was rather small at about 125 patients a week across five different clinic sites. However, word of Lindas clinic organization and her compassionate, comprehensive service to children spread fast, and by the time she resigned in 1990, her weekly patient load had grown to almost 400 per week. In 1990, Linda accepted a position with CCISD in the Special Education Department where she created care plans for the districts handicapped students, trained school nurses on those campuses about periodic care of those students, frequently intervened on students behalf, and conducted early childhood screening to identify intervention strategies for special needs preschoolers. Over the next 22 years, Linda worked with hundreds of CCISD students; in some cases beginning with preschoolers and ending her work with them only when they graduated. Linda retired from CCISD in 2012 after a 38-year career in public-health nursing. Linda is survived by her husband Michael and their son Benjamin; her mother Mary Petrin; her brother David Thomason (Brigitte); her sister Toni Petrin; three nieces; one nephew; three grandnieces; and two grandnephews. Throughout her fight with ALS, she was supported by a loyal cadre of nurse-friends with whom she worked since coming to Corpus Christi, Texas: Kate Brennan, Mandy Chisamore, Monica DeKoch, Melinda Gonzales, and Kim Humpal. These women made frequent visits, prepared meals, hosted celebrations, and kept her connected. Lindas high school friend Glenda Donahue organized others in their 1970 graduating class to help get her a state-of-the-art, alternating pressure, low-air-loss mattress and medical/surgical bedframe. Linda was indeed fortunate to have Dr. Pamela Kay Smith as her primary care physician. In addition to ALS, Linda became quite anemic last fall, and Dr. Smith arranged for Linda to receive necessary transfusions and spearheaded a course of treatment that located her blood loss and corrected the problem. Dr. C. Richard Varin performed the surgery that stopped her anemia with a perfect outcome. As Linda lost her ability to swallow, Dr. Pamela Smith also arranged for installation of a feeding tube through which a prepared liquid diet and all medications could be administered. Through their short relationship, Dr. Smith exhibited extreme compassion and quick, thoughtful responses to Lindas health challenges. Linda was also blessed with Ms. Brenda Lee Morales, a certified nurses assistant. Ms. Morales began assisting Linda after her surgery. Her ringing our doorbell in early to begin work through her home-health employer was truly a gift from God. A Memorial Service celebrating Lindas life will be held , 8, 2014 at 2 pm in St. Marks Episcopal Church located at 2727 Airline, Corpus Christi, Texas, 78414. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial gifts be made to the ALS Association, St. Marks Episcopal Church, or the charity of your choice. |
