Obituary: Wanda Khaterie Heitmann Haubner a lengthy and valiant battle with cancer and a brain tumor, Wanda Haubner died on 14th, aged 70. Born Wanda Khaterie Heitmann on 8, 1945 in Traverse City, Michigan, at the age of two her family moved to Vista, California. subsequent moves to Arcadia and Santa Monica, in 1959 her family returned to Vista following the death of her father. Wanda graduated from Vista High School and Palomar and received a Bachelors degree in Art from San Francisco State University. Wandas artistic talent was recognized at an early age: she began winning state art awards as young as 14. Her art was exhibited in Southern California regional art competitions and as a consequence she also received National recognition. Winning several local art scholarships provided Wanda the financial resources to attend college in San Francisco. college Wanda remained in San Francisco. A job she held immediately after college and one that remained dear to her heart all her life was working at the YMCA in Chinatown caring for elementary school children. She took lifelong delight in recounting stories of the time before OSHA laws when the teachers, accompanied by their students, would simply hop a city bus and head to Golden Gate Park to roast hot dogs on sticks in a fire pit they built themselves. Chinatown and her work there left an indelible impression on her, a mark that would influence her in succeeding years. her work at the YMCA, Wanda began working for Bechtel Corporation. For more than seven years, Wanda was the project manager supervising documentation for the various nuclear plants that Bechtel was building. Wandas visual acumen and the precision of her map reading skills led to an adroitness with blue prints and with other specialized documentation. All the time while she was working for Bechtel, an engineering firm, Wanda did not cease to employ her visual skills in continuing to produce her own artistic creations. work and on weekends she could be found at local flea markets selling those creations, a wide-ranging array of hand made items that might even include hand-sewn mens ties -wild wide ties that were all the rage in 1970s San Francisco. During this time she traveled to Europe for the first time but the lure of Asia was always beckoning. Eventually leaving her job at Bechtel, Wanda returned to the art and design world full-time. She began traveling frequently to Nepal and began a new adventure and a new career. In Nepal and later, back in California, she designed and imported beaded necklaces which she sold to major department stores throughout the United States. Initially, her company was called Wanda of Nepal and operated out of Kentfield, California. Later she branched out into accessories and made countless trips to Hong Kong both to buy leather and to have specialty items fabricated. Wanda of Nepal morphed into Wanda Accessories, a company which she ran out of her home town of Vista. At this time when wearable art was all the rage, she designed and fabricated leather purses, leather belts, and beaded purses. Wanda employed her mother as her business manager and used both her mother and her Aunt Mary and other friends to bead her bags, purses and belts. Wanda became a fixture at various designer shows in New York and elsewhere and ultimately filled orders from all over the nation. Always innovative, she designed leather pillows and leather wall hangings framed in Plexiglas. Her work, largely a one woman show throughout most of her career, was featured on several occasions in various home decorating and home design magazines. Wanda developed a network of artist friends in Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York who were always there to help her. As age caused their health to begin to fail, Wandas mother and aunt became the subject of her creativity and she turned her full attention and focus to their care. While the situation forced her to confine her formerly wide-ranging travels for the most part to southern California, it also opened a new aisle of opportunity and a new facet of her creativity as she began selling on ebay. Selling on ebay allowed Wanda to work from home and meet the needs of her family as a caregiver as well. Having traveled the world early in life and having the ability now to think back on her travels and accomplishments and do just as much travelling only now in cyber space, Wanda insisted that she never regretted her decision to devote her time to her mother and aunt. She rose to the level of ebay power seller, and managed to attend several ebay conventions -each convention a blast as she put it- with her sister. She brought antiques and objets dart to filmings of the Antique Roadshow in Honolulu, Los Angeles and San Diego. Wanda loved all things beautiful, colorful and creative. Her devotion to her mother and aunt was unfailing. She additionally helped out several of her older friends, even going so far as to make trips to emergency with them. Wandas aunt lived to 91 and her mother lived to 97. Adventurous and fearless always and perhaps to spite her too brief seventy years Wanda lived a full and active life. Some have described her as a free spirit. Her brother-in-law always called her, he Wandering one - gotta go, gotta be, gotta do. She packed several lifetimes into her 70 years. She was a mover and shaker. She was full of life, opinions, ideas, and never expressed regret. During her illness she never complained, never bemoaned her situation and never asked why me. She bore the struggle with dignity and fortitude. Wanda is survived by her sister, Anna A. Strawn, her brother-in-law Christopher W. Strawn and cousins throughout the United States and Canada. She will be remembered as a creative designer, a loyal friend, and a continued... |
