Obituary: Betty Lou Hanewinckel 31, 1930 - 22, 2014 Betty Lou was born on 31, 1930 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Leonard and Myrle Larson. At an early age, the family moved to the Barstow/Yermo area in Southern California. Betty went to school in Yermo where she met and married Garland Baker who was in the service stationed in Barstow. Betty had 3 sons; David born in Loma Linda, CA; Garland (Gary) born in Jonesboro, AR; and Neil born in Klamath Falls, OR. When the boys were young, Betty's husband Garland was killed in an accident and the family moved to Long Beach and later to Lakewood, CA. Betty married Gerald (Jerry) Hanewinckel in 1962 and they were married 45 years until Jerry passed in 2007. Betty was a bookkeeper for 17 years at an accounting firm in Long Beach before retiring to devote her time to serving the LDS church. She made numerous quilts, blankets and clothes for church members, prepared food for the Relief Society functions and hosted missionaries in her home. She was happy to devote her life to God and her family. She loved to cook and sew and enjoyed many motorhome trips with her family visiting many states. The family also enjoyed spending time in Silent Valley, California. He life was very full with her family and God. Her family remembers her as a very gracious, caring and strong lady. will always remember the many family dinners and reunions, "Cozy" quilts, pajamas for the grandkids and great grandkids, Christmas decorations and the monthly Bullsheet newsletter; but above all her very generous and giving spirit. She will be deeply missed and will be forever in our hearts. Betty is survived by two sons, David and Neil, 5 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and her brother Leonard F. Larson, Jr. (Sonny). She is preceded in death by her husband Gerald Hanewinckel, her son Garland Baker, her parents Leonard and Myrtle Larson and her sister Donna Baker. Sharing Some Wonderful Thoughts About My Lifetime Cousin 1. She raised three wonderful sons, basically on her own. 2. She was short, but still very powerful and beautiful inside and out. 3. She was full of Love and always put her family and friends before herself. 4. She was truly a Giver and never wanted anything in return. 5. She was always so positive even though she could have been having a very difficult day herself. 6. She showed us all how to be Happy regardless of what her personal challenges were each day. She had Lupus, a life time chronic illness, but she rarely complained and moved thru her day. 7. She indeed lived a Christian Life and I don't ever recall hearing a bad word come out of her mouth. 8. She never needed to smoke or drink as she lived on her own high of internal happiness. 9. She loved her family so very, very much. It would be a top priority to host a beautiful dinner at her house to make sure everyone would gather together and share birthdays or life celebrations. 10. She sure enjoyed cooking and baking and sharing recipes. "So let's get together soon for lunch." 11. She was the master in the kitchen; no one will be able to create those delicious Edna's brownies like your Mom. Remember how many restaurant trays she prepared for Dave's Galleria Coffee Shop? 12. She could take some simple material and make her sewing machine hum for hours as she created a gift for herself or baby quilt for someone at church. 13. She would be shopping early for that special colorful flannel and make sure every one of her kids and grandchildren had new pajama's to wear at Christmas time. Who will continue this family tradition? 14. She was and will always be the Pivot and center of our May Family Reunions. She would try so hard to make sure all her family dressed in Blue would be there and get involved with staying in touch with everyone. We have something special, our Reunions, that so many other families wish for. 15. She was very creative and established the May Family Bullsheet. She would call everyone and bug us all for news so we could hear about what each family was doing. The social media we share today will never replace the time of the written word of the Bullsheet or the personal conversation. 16. She believed in God and loved the Mormon Church. She helped them accomplish God's work daily with her support of the Relief Society activities plus hours of support working at the Mormon Temple. 17. She was truly one of God's Angel's and someone we all looked up too or wanted to be around. She lived each day in a simple and happy way! 18. God has opened his arms and taken her home, she is rejoicing in Heaven with a smile. We will see her again one day, but she is enjoying a Reunion with other family members now. 19. She did so much and taught each of us so many lessons, but it is up to us to keep our family strong and united, as She is still watching over all of us. 20. Happy people don't necessarily have the best of everything; they just make the most of everything they have. We are all Blessed because your Mother was such an important part of our lives. Her memories will live on, just open your hearts and She will be there to talk with YOU. She lived a beautiful Life! These are some of the footprints of your Mom, my wonderful loving Cousin, who remains in my heart. Love to each of you, Cousin Curly under the direction of Luyben Family Dilday-Mottell Mortuary, Long Beach, CA. |
