Obituary: Brian James Hammer, 51 of San Diego passed away on 1st at Sharp Memorial Hospital. He was born 9, 1963 in Los Angeles, California. Brian graduated from Crespi High School in Encino, California in 1981. He then went on to receive a Bachelors of Science degree from the University of Oregon in 1986, where he was an active member of the track team. Brian then completed his Respiratory care practioner license from Lane in Oregon. Brian moved to San Diego shortly after and started his career at Sharp Memorial Hospital where he worked for the last 27 years a Respiratory care practitioner. Brian met his wife Bernice at Sharp and they were married on 9th, 1994. recently celebrated their 20 year anniversary. Brian's passion and talent for running, led him to be an assistant track coach at Clairemont High for a period of time. Brian could be found most recently cycling all over San Diego. Brian was an avid sports fan cheering for his favorite teams: The Oregon Ducks, The Los Angeles Dodgers and the Los Angeles Kings. Brian is survived by his wife, Bernice. His parents, Kathy and George Hammer, his brother Robert Hammer, his sister Tina Sprock and her husband Michael Sprock and their daughter Raina Sprock. Obituary: Rev. Howard Hammelmann was born in Sterling, CO on 30, 1917, the second of seven children. His father, the late Rev. Karl Hammelmann, of Grossenmoor, Germany, came to the U.S. in 1911 to minister to the many German-Russian immigrants. This is how Karl met in Colorado and married Wilhemina Stutz, whose parents were Germans from Johannestal, Russia. Howards youth was spent in the Midwest-Nebraska, Colorado, North & South Dakota. He graduated from Yankton in SD. with his Bachelor of Arts in 1940 and his B.A. Divinity degree in 1941. Later that year, Howard was ordained into the Christian ministry & married a cheerful nursing student named Viola Christina Juhnke. The newlyweds served a Nebraska church for three years, then Howard entered Hartford Theological Seminary in CT where his daughter Jacqueline was born in 1946 & he received his M.A. Theology in 1947. Howard was a conscientious objector during World War II because he had multiple cousins fighting on the German side. Upon his graduation from seminary, in lieu of military service, Howard was appointed Youth Director by Church World Service and sent to Stuttgart, Germany, for three years, where his daughter Marjolene was born in 1950 & where he helped build Sonnenberg Youth Hostel, in Unterjoch, for teenagers displaced by WWII. Howard and Viola were then called back from Germany, to Glen Ullin, ND to assume the pastorate vacated by the untimely death of his father. While ministering at the Glen Ullin Congregational Church from 1950-1954, their children Christel and David were born in 1951 and 1953. The Hammelmanns then served First German Congregational Church of Denver, CO for 15 years, prior to pastoring the Free Evangelical Lutheran Cross Church of Fresno from 1969 to 1979. In retirement, Howard was chosen as Pastor Emeritus of this church, where he and Viola celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1991, a year before she lost her battle to cancer. Besides his beloved Viola, Rev. Howard Hammelmann is preceded in death by his daughter Christel Gates; two sisters, Helene Howard and Ruth Poppe; two brothers, Herbert and John Hammelmann; and great-grandson Ezekiel Ssebulime. He is survived by brother Bill & Loretta Hammelmann of Lincoln NE and sister Miriam & Joe Scherer of Fond du Lac WI; daughters Jackie and Ken Pfenning of Thornton CO (Kendra & Sang Wilson of Thornton), Marjolene and Stan Mattoon of Merced CA (Melissa of Milpitas, Matthew of Concord, Marlene & David Ssebulime of Nashville TN, Michelle & Anthony Ramirez of Elk Grove) and son Dave and Gayle Hammelmann of Porterville (Becky, John & Kaiti all of Visalia). He is also survived by Christels husband, Michael Gates (Julie & Stephen Lyon) all of Visalia, and seven great-grandchildren: Drake and Brooke Wilson; Madeleine, Charlotte, Elsie, and Lucy Lyon; and Max Ramirez. Howard was known for his integrity, infectious humor, and easily making friends. He was an avid gardener who enjoyed creating ceramics and playing piano. Howard passed from this earth into eternal life with Jesus on May 20, 2011, at Linwood Gardens in Visalia CA.
