Obituary:
Chief Petty Officer Harriett Lavinia Howard - Age 89, of Smyrna, TN, passed away on ,  the 26th of 2013.  Born in Chattanooga, TN on the 19th of 1924 to the late Alfred Mann Howard, Sr. and Louise Yater Howard Barnes where she grew up with her brother, Naval Captain Alfred Mann Howard, Jr. (deceased) and sister, Mary Howard Hibbett in Nashville, TN and received her education within the Metro Nashville Public School System, graduating from Central High School in 1941 as a National Honor Society member. Immediately after high school, she gained employment with the Southern Railroad , before subsequently enlisting in the U.S. Navy Women's Reserve (WAVES) three years later in 1944. The length of her civilian employment, which spanned 33 years, and her concurrent military service that spanned 39 years, was made possible by her employer's military-leave policy during active-duty periods. Paralleling her service in to her military career was also her dedication to her civilian duties working in the Railway . She spent the beginning of her career working in the accounting department in Nashville before being transferred to Louisville, KY where she resided for over 20 years and served as Staff Assistant to the Vice President of Intermodal Traffic before retiring from the L&N Railroad. During her naval career, she was the recipient of numerous awards and commendations, which included the Commander Navy Recruiting Command Gold Wreath with 13 stars for recruiting excellence, two Navy Commendations medals, and a World War II medal, among many others. Retiring from the U.S. Naval Reserve at the age of 60 allowed her more time to invest in opportunities for advocacy work for the support of veterans. During her retirement, she was again active in pursuing volunteer, administrative and consultative positions within local and national organizations. Her efforts were recognized among many organizational and professional circles as she was awarded several prestigious recognitions, awards, and commendations for her advocacy endeavors. Another noteworthy accomplishment in 1992 was her reaching out to Tennessee’s State Governor at that time in requesting the 98th General Assembly to donate $20,000 to the Women’s Memorial in Washington, D.C. to honor the 20,000 plus women veterans in TN. Then from 1994 through 1999, she served as a member of the Board of Directors of the World War II Memorial Trust as secretary-treasurer accounting for over $1.5 million in contributions directed towards the construction of this memorial. As most of her life’s journey was spent in military service, she had a special interest in seeing the dedication of the World War II Memorial and the Women in Military Service in America (WIMSA) Memorial in Washington D.C. In May 2006, the Department of Veterans Affairs Voluntary Service (VAVS) National Advisory Committee selected Harriett out of 94,000 active volunteers throughout the VA System of 154 facilities as the Female Volunteer of Year 2005. Her life of dedication and service to country and community before and after retirement was and is remarkable and will forever be held in high regard to the many lives her life and contributions touched.  Over the last few years she was very active in fund raising for the soon to be opened Fisher House of Tennessee located in Murfreesboro.   She is survived by her sister, Mary Hibbett; one nephew; five nieces; eight great-nephews; and one great-niece and one great great nephew. A memorial service will be held in her honor at one o’clock in the afternoon on , the 11th of 2013 at Woodlawn’s Dignity Hall. In lieu of customary remembrances, the family requests that donations be directed to the TN Fisher House Foundation, Inc., P.O. Box 774, Brentwood, TN 37204-0774.  Woodlawn Roesch-Patton , 660 Thompson Lane, Nashville, TN 37204, 615-383-4754.

Obituary: Hal Bowen Howard, Jr., a gentleman devoted to his Episcopal faith, his family, his friends, and his home city of Memphis, TN, died peacefully in Palm Beach, Florida on , 22nd at 89 with his son and daughter by his side. Beloved by all who knew him, he was an erudite man with courtly manners and a sly sense of humor.

Mr. Howard was born on Jun 8, 1925 in Memphis, TN to Hal B. Howard and Marianne Crawford Howard. His early years were spent in Memphis attending Pentacost - Garrison School. His high school years were spent at The Choate School in Wallingford, Ct . He proceeded to Yale University for college and received a Bachelors Degree in International Relations. Furthering his education, Hal received an MBA from Harvard Business School. He is a Certified Investment Counselor as well. Mr. Howard served in the Armed Services, posted in Japan.

Throughout his illustrious career, Hal amassed over forty years of experience in the field of investment management. He is considered an expert in his field. He began his professional career began with T. Rowe Price of Baltimore, MD and was asked to move to New York City to start the office there. He remained with T Rowe Price for twenty - five years occupying the positions of Vice President and Director. In 1999, he established his own investment consulting firm, working with clients to meet their investment objectives by advising them and managing their portfolios. Until his death, Mr. Howard remained active in the investment business.

While working in New York, Mr. Howard resided in Greenwich, Ct. There he raised his children, Hal Bowen Howard, III and Sara Crump Crawford Howard from his former marriage to the late Sara Macrae Humphreys Howard.

Hal has lived primarily in Palm Beach, Florida for the last 25 years with his wife Suzanne de Rose Howard, who has also predeceased him. While in Palm Beach, Mr. Howard was a devoted member of Bethesda-by- the Sea Episcopal Church, proudly serving as an usher on many s. In addition, he was a member of the Bath and Tennis Club, The Everglades Club, the Sandpipers Club and was a regular at Greens Pharmacy for breakfast on mornings.

Hal was a philanthropic man and gave generously to the things that were important to him. Recurring themes in Mr. Howards generous philanthropy were his sentimental attachment to Memphis and its history, his dedication to superior education for those that might not be able to afford it. He was devoted to give opportunity to people who otherwise would not have it and took great joy in honoring others through his gifts. In recognition of his ongoing gifts to the Memphis Garden Club Mr Howard was named an honorary member of the Garden Club of America , which he found both humbling and amusing as it is an all womens organization. Devotion to his heritage took form in the donation of a refurbished home, the current headquarters of Memphis Heritage and named Howard Hall in his honor. His philanthropic endeavors are numerous - but most recently he had dedicated his time as the Founder of the Crawford-Howard Foundation in Memphis, where he also served on the Board of Trustees of Elmwood .

Hal was a world traveler , enjoyed golfing, studying history, hunting and living life to the fullest.

Mr. Howard is predeceased by his parents Hal Bowen Howard and Marianne Crawford Howard; his sister, Marianne Howard Guckenberger; his former wife, Sara Macrae Humphreys Howard; and his wife, Suzanne deRose Howard. He leaves his children, Hal Bowen Howard, III of Minneapolis, MN and Sara Crump Crawford Howard of Dorset, VT; grandchildren Cooper Meyer Howard and Isabella Macrae Garay; his niece
Marianne Farnsworth Horan of Alexandria, VA; his nephew Sidney W Farnsworth, III, of Memphis; Memphis cousins William T Arthur, Jr., Anne Arthur Kenny, Coors Arthur, and Mary Miles Loveless; great nieces Elizabeth P. Farnsworth and Marianne Crawford Horan.
